Congratulations Mark! NSW Sports Volunteer Award finalist!

We are very proud of coach Mark Featherstone being named as a finalist in the NSW Community Sports Volunteer Awards.

In assessing the top volunteer coaches several criteria are considered:

1. The level and success of the teams coached

2. The level of innovation in the training program

3. The time involvement

4. Leadership and mentoring of junior coaches

5. Promotion of a healthy, fair, safe and inclusive culture

Mark is outstanding nominee for the state sports volunteer coach of the year. He has been an integral part of the recent premiership success of St George, many personal milestones achieved by his athletes through the year, and has incorporated various complementary training and conditioning sessions, so that training not just “one long erg”. 

Arguably above all else, it has been the off-water development and leadership Mark has provided that makes his nomination so worthy. He has inspired not just the athletes in his squad, but given endless support across all parts of the club.

Mark is the only member from the rowing community to have made the list of finalists this year, and we wish him all the best at the NSW Awards Night on 18 August.

On Friday night, a huge crowd of over 140 rowers and guests gathered to celebrate another hugely successful competition season!

We were fortunate enough to have special guests Tony Blower - CEO Rowing NSW, Deanna Fekete - Director Rowing NSW, & Eleni Petinos - MP Miranda, present to assist with presentation of our many special awards, including the RNSW 2015-16 Premiership Shield!

Lilly Featherstone: NSW Coxswain of the Year!

St George Rowing Club is officially the #1 rowing club in the state... Again!

And our very own Lilly Featherstone has been awarded the Rowing NSW Coxswain of the Year!

Securing the Rowing NSW Premiership Shield in back-to-back seasons, it was fitting for rowers from St George to attend the Rowing NSW Annual Presentation Dinner. There was certainly much silverware to take home!

The Rowing NSW presentation dinner recognises both clubs and individuals who have made achievements throughout the season. 

Lilly Featherstone was awarded the Rowing NSW Coxswain of the Year Award. This is the first time a member of St George Rowing Club has received this award. We are all very proud of you, Lilly!

8 golds and 8th overall at the 2016 Australian Masters Rowing Championships

The weekend had everything for St George Rowing Club’s perennial masters who competed against Australia’s best at the 2016 Australian Masters Rowing Championships.

Despite torrential rain and a number of races being cancelled due to the wet and wild conditions, our club has finished 8th on the medal tally out of over 100 clubs from around the country. Not bad for a little club from the Sutherland Shire!

The AMRC this year was held at the Kawana Waters course on QLD’s Sunshine Coast. Highlights include:

- 3rd in the Interstate Quad race for Krys, Amanda and Andrea, along with Leichhardt’s Ange. Great work girls!

- Krys winning the National WME1x.... Go champ!

- Andrea and Wendy taking bronze in the WMA2x... only narrowly behind current and former Olympians. Wow!

- Amanda getting 2nd in the WMC1x - less than a second away from the gold.

- Wendy, Krys, Andrea and Sue, with their cox  from Manning River placing 3rd in the WMC4+

- Stephen, Airton, Alan and Rob and cox Wendy getting 3rd in the MMD4+!

- Airton winning the Mix-D2x with Sue and coming 2nd in the Mix-C2x division with Andrea. Great work!

- Steve K and Merete getting 4th, narrowly missing a place in their Mix-D2x division!

- Golds for the Mix-D4x crews of Andrea, Krys, Stephen and Airton an dJo, Sue, Alan and Rob in their respective divisions!

Is there such a thing as too much fun in a Mix-4x?!

- Steve K winning the Men’s Masters Para 1x! Great effort in rough conditions!

- Krys and Amanda, and Jo and Sue, both winning their heats in the WD2x in fast times.... unfortunately the finals were cancelled due to weather conditions, but it would have been an awesome race!

And, of course, while our Masters would prefer to be racing they made the most of the down time.

12 Golds for St George at the NSW Masters Championships

Congratulations to all our athletes who raced at the Masters State Champs!

A note from Captain Harrison: “Our great club sent 32 hardened rowers to SIRC last weekend and 27 returned home with a medal. A further 3 rowers were unlucky not to medal however they still earned Premiership points. Brilliant stuff!

“Not only did your performances over the weekend help retain the Masters Shield for a 5th consecutive year, we also won the Premiership for just the third time. It is a fantastic result for the club and a credit to everyone who has raced this season and to our hard working coaches and volunteers.

“Thanks again everyone.............you should all feel proud.”

Massive thanks to Stephen and Allan for organising and towing the trailer, to Airton and Claudia for the fantastic photos, and all our family, friends and supporters who have contributed to our success at this regatta and over the entire season!

Some highlights from the NSW State Masters Championships include:

- 7 medals to St George rowers in the WMD4x. Awesome stuff!!!!

- Steve winning the Men’s para single and the Men’s para double (with Stephen)

- John, Lance, Graham and Chris winning the Men’s H4x, while Harry and John O were busy getting busy getting bronze in the MMG2x!

- Krys and Andrea winning the WC4x (with Selina and Kellie)

- The Men’s E8+ getting 3rd, a photo finish (just 0.08 seconds) behind Mosman

- Andrea, Amanda and Krys (with Ange from Leichhardt) winning the women’s state quad trial race. Good luck at Australian Masters Rowing Championships in a couple of weeks girls, and coach Adrian!

- Second place in the men’s state quad trial race, narrowly missing the win.

- Amanda, Krys and Linda all medalling in the WD2x. Great smiles!!

- Wendy getting a super second in the WMA1x - the winner was an Olympic qualifier, so that’s a pretty awesome effort

Congratulations to our state reps: Amanda, Andrea and Krys, and coach Adrian!

It’s official! Three of our Masters Women athletes along with our coach Adrian will be representing NSW at the Australian Masters Rowing Championship.

The AMRC will take place over 2-5 June at Lake Kawana in QLD, where Amanda, Andrea and Krys (along with Ange from Leichhardt Rowing Club), will be looking to take the gold in the Interstate Quad race.

Fantastic effort to win the trial selections and represent the state. The club is very proud of you all. Go get them!!

Trickett Grade Championships 2016

What a fantastic weekend for our club. Thanks to everyone’s hard work we achieved so many goals and in some instances exceeded expectations.  We even endured several setbacks with injuries and illness, but all of these obstacles were overcome by your willingness to participate and work as a great team.  We had 55 rowers compete over the weekend and 50 went home with a medal.

Many of our masters stretched themselves and successfully raced 2000m instead of their normal 1000m.  A big thanks to Danika, Bev, Linda, Krys, Andrea, Sue, Wendy, Jo, Judy, Merete, Carolyn, Hobbit, Alan, Airton Snr, Glenn, Hendo and our Captain.  

Some of the more noteworthy achievements yesterday were:

Winning the Trickett Cup for a second year in a row

The successful mixing of Cranbrook boys with St.George rowers in crew boats

A 2nd place in our WC 8+, just pipped by Canberra 0.27sec.  This was an exciting race to watch with one of the closest finishes, just 1.24 sec covered the first 3 crews.

A commendable 5th by Bec in her WN 1X

Great bronze by Linda in WD 1X

Bronze for Danika and Bev in WA 2X  - onya Bev!

Julian & Oliver for GOLD in MC 2X – just brilliant boys

GOLD for Krys, Andrea, Sue & Wendy in WC 4+

And of course no weekend can go without some lighter moments.  It will remain a secret which men’s double raced (and got the fastest time) with pair oar riggers on their double !!

Finally, a big thanks to all the parents, volunteers and supporters, as well as our hard working coaches Adrian and Mark.  You have done a fabulous job all season and our success would not be achievable without your efforts.

Vale Jack Boerma (1924-2016)

Jack Boerma, a long time member of the NSW Union of Rowers, passed away peacefully on Saturday, 6 February. Jack would have been 92 this year and was a member of St George RC.

Inspired by his uncle, a champion oarsman, Jack learnt to row in the Netherlands when he was 15 with Spaarne Club and went on to row with Halsted RC.  WWII made competing difficult but Jack’s rowing ability was well recognised locally as he kept the town supplied with food by rowing back and forth across the Zuider Zee.  

Jack arrived in Australia in 1951 and joined Mosman RC where he rowed with great success, success that he took to St George RC and continued over the next 60 or so years.  Jack rowed in the 4 seat of the inaugural K8+ that took part in the 2013 ACT Championships.

Taree Summer Regatta

With 41 medalists and all competitors placing in races what a weekend of racing for the red and white rowers at the 2016 Taree Summer Regatta!

Some of the many highlights over the weekend were:

The successful integration of the club’s partnership with Cranbrook to now row as “One St.George”. It is great to have so much new energy and club spirit join in on our biggest weekend away!

52 rowers competed at Taree and all earned places and points, a fantastic result!

41 rowers won races (which is nearly 80%)

Congratulations Danika Wright, Nicholas Stavrinos and Oliver Gorman, with 5 wins each

Also, 4 wins to Thomas Beckhurst, Rosie Benson, Julian Da Ros, Ellyn Featherstone, Stephen Irons and Krys Macready

Every Cranbrook boy won at least one race, a great start for racing in St.George colours

Time Trial 4

Another great morning of intra-club competition on Sunday, with crews from all squads racing for the last club time trial for 2015.

Here are the results!

Well done Eamonn, Julian, Oliver and Lachie for taking out the line honours (and beating the Captain’s crew in the process)! A very tight finish, and great spectacle for all watching as the boats cam through in quick succession at the line.

Special mention also to the girls’ quad - or should that be “trod”. Rowing with just three for most of the race, and convincing your coach to jump in for the finish to remind him how tough it is!

Great work everyone, and looking forward to more mean times in 2016!

All systems GO! at the 2015 Head of the Yarra

St George’s two crews that took on Australia’s best at the 2015 Head of the Yarra have returned with impressive results and envy-inducing stories from the post-race festival.

A typically overcast Melbourne day greeted the athletes and spectators alike. Though not what a tourist might be after, with the mild temperature and still water it was perfect conditions for rowing!

No time for sightseeing! The crews do a final inspection of the boats and discuss some final strategies for the race.

Racing started at 10:30am, with our “sizzling seventies” Masters Men in the first wave. As typically happens at regatta, the Masters racing is grouped into divisions by age. However, sometimes it can be hard to get a big field of competition when the average crew age to qualify for the “H+” category has to be 70 or above! 

Not a problem at the HOTY, with eight 8+’s starting in the H+ category. It was going to be a hard and tough battle, and our men relished stepping up to the challenge!

Around the Yarra’s bends, the crew of Chris, Ian, Graeme T, Graham W, Harry, John, and Leichhardt’s Denis and Bruce, and Peter M in the cox seat, aimed to chase down crews from Toowong RC, Melbourne Uni BC, Banks, and North Shore RC, among others.

In the end, the men came 5th in their division in a time of 35:41.95. Not bad at all for eight men born before WW2! Very proud of your hard work at training and results to show for it!

Almost exactly an hour later, it was the glamour ladies’ turn in the Womens D Masters category.

A field of 14 crews competed in this category. While this was the second HOTY outing for St George’s men, it was an entirely new experience (and course!) for the ladies.

The glamour ladies of the St George WMD8+ - Sue, Jo, Krys, Merete, Judy, Bev, Deb, and Maribel (coxed by Jacky) - have been working towards this race since June. Leading into the HOTY with great results at the Iron Cove Classics, the Head of the Parramatta, the Head of the Nepean, the crew was exhilarated, excited, and perhaps a little nervous, to go at it against the best from around the country.

The ladies took the course and one-by-one chased down their opponents: First the Fremantle Composite crew, next the Balmain RC 8+, after that the Essendon/Footscray combination. Steadily (or stealthily?) our women worked their was down the 9.5km field, catching the competition at every turn.

Finishing in a time of 35:07.44, the ladies walk away with 4th in their division, and claim to the fastest crew from NSW. Excellent result! Shows what dedication, training and a plan can achieve!

After the race it was time for festivities..... what can we say? What happens at HOTY stays at HOTY!!

The Head of the Yarra is one of Australia’s largest rowing events, this year attracting over 2,100 competitors from every state and internationally.

St George Rowing Club looks forward to returning in 2016 with the aim of fielding at least 3 crews! See ya then, Melbourne!

And a big hug and flowers to Stephen and Al for taking the boats down and back..... A massive effort, and that’s before we mention what happened to your foot, Al!!!

The Way to the Yarra has Many Heads

Head racing is becoming very popular in Australia, following in the path of overseas rowing which has been rowing Head races successfully for decades.

The most famous Head race in Australia is, of course, the Head of the Yarra which trials from the City of Melbourne up river to Hawthorn Rowing Club – a distance of 8.6kms.

This year St George has two crews travelling to Melbourne for the big race!

St George Rowing Club made its first appearance in the Head of the Yarra in 2014 when a team of “sizzling seventies” gentlemen contested the ‘H’ Division (70yrs+). This crew performed very strongly in their Division and are looking forward to the challenge again in 2015.

The Club Sizzling Seventies Mens squad will be joined by a “glamour crew of ladies” in the D/E age Division.

Led by Sue Robinson, the crew will comprise: Maribel, Deb, Bev, Judy, Merete, Krys and Jo, all of whom are experiencing other Head races in Sydney to warm up for Yarra.

NSW is now offering a variety of Head races in October/November of each rowing Season as a lead up to the Yarra.

Already contested is the Head of the Shoalhaven, a beautiful row on the mighty Shoalhaven with its picturesque surroundings!

The three Iron Cove Clubs – Balmain, Drummoyne & Leichhardt now work together to separately host the “Iron Cove Classic” races:  3 Head races in October/November.

The course leads from the Iron Cove around Cockatoo Island and return – a distance of 7kms.

In between, there is the traditional Head of the Parramatta leading from Ryde Bridge down to Sydney Rowing Club at Abbotsford.- a short sprint of 5kms!

So, St George Masters are very busy racing the Head races and represented by two 8+ crews both in heavy training.

We wish our ladies and mens crews well as they carry the St George colours into the battle!

2 and 4 for the 8′s at Head of the Parramatta

With a month to go before the Head of the Yarra, our Masters Men and Women have placed 4th and 2nd in their respective events at the 2015 Head of the Parramatta.

It’s an early morning for St George rowers to get to boating at Ryde, but the conditions couldn’t have been any more perfect.

The Men’s events went first, and the St George composite MM8+ crew of Graeme, Harry, John, Gary, Ian, Chris, Denis and Bruce (both Leichhardt rowers) and their cox Peter finished in a time of 18:54.68, 4th on age-adjustments and just over a minute shy of the strong Glebe-crew winning pace.

Then it was time for the ladies to see what they could do on the water. The starting order saw the St George WM8+ starting between Sydney Women’s MLC and Leichhardt - both incredibly well-seasoned rowing machines. The ladies’ game plan: go hard, get ahead, stay ahead.

They did just that, catching the SWMLC crew early on, and maintaining the starting distance over Leichhardt for most of the course. In the end, the St George women got 2nd with a time of 19:41.78. Leichhardt won, but will surely be looking out at the next race for the St George ladies. Well done to the crew of Sue, Jo, Merete, Judy, Maribel, Danika, Bev, Mabs (from North Shore, thanks so much for helping out), and super-cox Wendy!

The Head of the Parramatta, hosted by Sydney Rowing Club, sees crews from clubs and schools across Sydney compete over 4.5km from Homebush Bay east along the river to Abbotsford. Many of the crews racing will also be heading to the Head of the Yarra, so this is great practice for the Masters planning on heading south of the border at the end of the November.

Spring Regatta Wrap

Plenty of great signs for the season with 22 St George rowers placing in races at the 2015 Spring Regatta, the first regatta in the 2015-16 program hosted at the Sydney International Regatta Centre.

Highlights include:

- 1st to Oliver, Julian, Robert and Airton in MD4

- Great work by Braeden getting 2nd in his MN1x race, and then teaming up with Will to get 2nd in the MN2x

- 1st for Sue, Jo, Judy and Maribel in the WD4x continuing their excellent form from the Australian Masters in Adelaide 

- Congrats Theresa on your first regatta and club points with 3rd in the WD2x (with Danika)!

- Awesome row by Julian for third in the other MN1x division, and the 2x crew of Julian and Oliver getting a seriously fast time in their double for 2nd place, and unlucky not to get the win.

And continuing the tradition of taking a relaxing swim after finishing the race!

In May 2015 the Coach said…

You need a plan, something to work towards, a reason to put effort into the training.

The future vision was to become a reality......

He looked at the regatta schedule & The Australian Masters Games in Adelaide in October with a crew of eight was our aim.

Who is willing to commit, was the next question?

Twelve St George Masters women commenced the training program, always working together doing the warm up stretches, weight training, core exercises, and stretch down exercises. The technical erg & water sessions required a total overhaul of our rowing technique, not to mention the discipline to stay switched on with everything in regards to boat handling..…this was all quite a challenge for the coach just coping with us.

Unfortunately life sometimes gets in the way of rowing, as a result of various personal commitments, some of the original group had to drop out.

So it became the Adelaide crew of four (Sue Robinson, Joanne Ward, Merete Crooks & Judy Massey), with our ever patient & always encouraging Coach Jonathan McCree-Grey.

As the Adelaide date approached, the training stepped up & the coach was pushing us way past our comfort zone. By the time we got to Adelaide we had survived 300hrs of coaching & 650km of ergs.

Adelaide welcomed us on Monday 5th October with a temperature of 35° & winds 39km/hr, as we acquainted ourselves with the fabulous course at West Lakes.

Competition began Friday 9th & the weather was perfect 27° & a very light breeze.

Race1: WD Coxed Four with cox Lea Partridge from Melbourne RC was a tight race, our time of 4:10.3 giving us a silver medal, just 1 second behind an Adelaide crew (including two members of the SA state rowing team).

Race 2: WC Coxed Four with cox Ray Beaton from Manning River RC an exciting gold medal win with our time 4:26.6

Race 3: WD Coxless Quad Scull with a time 3:56.3 we came in third for a bronze medal

Day two Race 4: Womens D Pair A brilliant start for Sue & Joanne (in her first ever race in the pair) saw them take the lead & come home with gold in a time 4:19.5. Merete Judy (both first time racing the pair) coming out with a bronze medal.

Race 5:WC Pair The breeze had picked up a little by now & the result saw Sue & Joanne win silver in a time of 4:35.8 and  Merete & Judy bronze with a time 5:04.0

Race 6: WB Coxed Four with cox Christine Soontjens from Riverside RC Adelaide, being cheered home for gold , by our new friends from the Riverside Club, with a time 4:24.8

Race 7:WC Coxless Quad Scull A full field of seven crews was an exciting race. We were leading all the way when a decent crab by one of our crew allowed Torrens to gain water on us, but our determination came through & we flew home for gold in a time 4:19.1

Final Result of Seven races…Seven Medals each.

In short it was a fabulous experience, with Jonathan the super coach at the helm, confident that we would achieve gold….& he was right!

2015 Club Time Trial 2

Hot times and a hot morning for our 2nd club time trial of the year! 

Here are the results - some good improvements from the last time trial.

Congratulations to Steve, Andrea, Toni and Stephen for taking out the quickest time in the 9km course... They worked hard for it!

It was a hard shift in the “cocktail lounge”...

He has probably earned it....

Special mention to Lachie in his single and Lilly, Theresa, Dylan and Amelia for the exciting dead-heat tie for 1st in the 3km fun course.

Oar-some work by Airton Snr, smashing the full course in his single ahead of half the big boat entries!

Excellent effort also by our Master’s Women on their final session before heading to Adelaide for the Australian Masters Games this week. Good luck girls! (And bring us home a bottle of Barossa Red!) 

The “sizzling seventies” Master’s Mens crew kept ahead of the ladies this time and are looking strong with 7 weeks of preparation left before the Head of the Yarra.

Massive thanks to Al and Wendy for timekeeping, Michael for looking after the BBQ refueling station and Mark, Dave, Eamonn, Kate, Jon, Adrian and Sam for keeping an eye on us out on the water! Your efforts make the morning run smoothly and are appreciated by all.
