the self flagellation thing is also bc she has a deep religious paranoia that halone is acutely aware of everything she does so she'll preemptively punish herself in hopes to cool halone's wrath

nail boart. you know she wuld though. aloys' inclination toward self flagellation largely runs physical (typically octobrisms) in a way she interprets as religious but is also clearly not that. she has a lot of inconsistent conflicting feelings of superiority and total blame for things she couldn't have changed (gridania is full of unfixable heathens who are not worth her time, but simultaneously it's her fault that the events at tamtara deepcroft happened bc she should have somehow known and intervened) and her greatest focus is in the repetitive and physical. journaling is her healthier habit, self-punishment in halone's name is her worst

she finds the process of doing her hair pretty relaxing once it's down to the repetitive ritual of braiding. she goes for long again in late heavensward bc she gets hurt & also her whole belief system is getting upended so she really benefits from the meditation thereof

i do intend for aloys' hair to be protective braids done into bigger braids, which requires some amount of suspension of disbelief, but also a lot happens for her in arr so by the time its done and they all celebrate she's like oh thank god I need to fix this it has been so so long. And then immediately shit hits the fan again so she gets pissed off and cuts it all out and does it up shorter in the span of a night

was discussing her drinking habits and i think she does drink in very seriously limited moderation because she gets a religious paranoia about it and also she's an awful person to be around when inebriated bc she gets morose and sad and pathetic. The things she could have done but didn't. etc. on the other hand i feel strongly that the more alcohol gets into her system the more she feels a need to be topless so it sort of balances out
