Battle of the leads – Who should Suzy pick in Uncontrollable Fond?
On the right we have Shin Joon Young (Kim Woo Bin), a celebrity heartthrob who happens to drop out of law school, gaining the hate of his mother. And on the left we have Choi Ji Tae/ Hyun Woo (Lim Ju-Hwan), a rich boy who pretends that he’s poor because his father destroyed the girl he loves life. Finally, in the middle of it all we have No Eul (Suzy Bae) who seems to like Joon Young on the inside but goes fully ‘I love you’ mode to Ji Tae when drunk. Conflicted by which handsome guy to pick, she applied to be on TLC’s newest show, Battle of the Leads.
Candidate #1: Shin Joon Young
PROS
They Have History
The story of how Joon Young met No Eul is probably one of the cutest and realistic that I have ever seen. With effort to mend her heartbroken friend, she throws her sassiness at the hottest guy in school, which became the ultimate weapon that makes him infatuated with her. They celebrated a 100 day anniversary, in which No Eul wasn’t aware of. accompanied by a gigantic ‘in your face’ teddy bear. They met again during college in Seoul where No Eul pretended to be his girlfriend to warn off clingy girls (I hope they have more flashbacks because those times were adorable). Though followed with multiple complaints, we all know that No Eul secretly enjoyed playing this fake girlfriend part. Years ago, she was gonna confessed her feelings anyway but misunderstood when seeing Joon Young hug another girl and backed off. As a girl myself, feelings don’t easily change and who knows whether or not she still likes him now in present day or not.

2. Just Look At Him
Putting all history aside, Joon Young is basically a teen heartthrob. He has a successful career and hits a 10 on the ‘how physically attractive are you’ scale. With this, he is able to provide for No Eul and her brother. Who wouldn’t fall in love with that smirk. (Matchaju comment: I personally think Joon young looks wayyy better before as a high school student. He seems so cold and distant present time and plus I like his hair down). Oh and of course, the oh so lovely shower scene.

CONS
Pulling the Cancer Card
First episode and this drama goes full out and pulls the cancer card (it didn’t specifically state cancer, but we all know). Despite this, I was actually not annoyed at this overused move, but was actually more compelled into watching because it’s gonna be one of those short time frame dramas. However, what is the point of making the girl fall in love with you and eventually have to leave her behind? Even if No Eul did know, the feeling of watching someone you love suffer isn’t all that great either. For example, in Oh My Venus his outburst of pain was simply followed by tears and pain as one can’t do anything for the suffered in the moment. Especially since Joon Young is as stubborn as a brick. Should No Eul choose someone who she can spend the rest of her life with?
this point is too sad for any pictures
2. Coming on Too Strong. Bruh
I get it. You have three months left to live and the goal is to spend it with the girl you have fallen in love with since high school. But… it seems like he’s hitting on her way too hard especially since no one knows about his situation. He barely sees her after several years and he chooses to propose on stage in front of thousands of fan girls who are even more deathly than the heat of the Sahara desert (now that’s deadly). If that is not borderline uncomfortable then i don’t know what is. (Matchaju: secretly I think it’s super cute though if only it will ever happen to me in real life).

Candidate #2: Choi Ji Tae
PROS
He’s There to Support Her
Being the second male lead, he barely gets screen time with our lovely No Eul, but every time he does, he plays the supportive hero (like all the other second male leads out there). He seems like the type of guy who tails her secretly all day and makes sure she gets home safely or that she has an umbrella when it rains. Though, Joon Young also seems like that type of person too, but he’ll probably get mobbed by teens girls trying to do that. He also makes sure her and her brother are fed even though he is ‘poor’ himself. (Matchaju comment: feel bad for the guy though, it must be exhausting living a life full of lies).

2. ‘Husband’ is Calling
Even though Ji Tae/ Hyun Woo met her after Joon Young by a couple of years, he gets honourable mention because she saves him as ‘husband’ on her phone. That can mean a lot of things actually. She thinks of him as a provider and thus the term husband, actually wants to marry him or wants to make Joon Young jealous every time Ji Tae calls (tho very unlikely). As ‘husband’ status, he has a one up against Joon Young.
CONS
Liar Liar Pants on Fire
Ji Tae’s whole life is a lie. Gosh after being friends for so long, I can’t believe No Eul never once ask to visit his house, ask about his family or simply where do you get your income from. He’s basically running this double life, acting like he’s Hannah Montana or something, and expects not to be busted. He controls her life from behind the scenes by pulling a couple of strings here and there to make sure her work situation is always settled. I’m no love expert, but No Eul ain’t going to be Miss Sunshine when she finds out.
2. Ajusshi got No Chemistry
No Eul calls Ji Tae/ Hyun Woo, Ajusshi, which i don’t get because he looks pretty young to me (then again i’m blind so…). Despite that, there seems to be no chemistry between the two characters. No Eul once stated that that she should just marry him for the sake of escaping from the harsh reality and instead live in the confinement of a relationship where he at least could provide for her. The worst thing is that they come off as an older brother younger sister relationship. Plus, No Eul only acts this way when she is drunk…
Those are the summary of the two candidates. Honestly if I was No Eul, I would have a difficult time choosing. Especially since she’s going to end up hurt either way due to the messed up secrets connecting the three of them together. Which couple do you think should take the #relationshipgoals award? Thanks for tuning into Battle of the Leads on TLC and may the best oppa win. Comment below to let me know who you vote for!!
(I secretly am miserable because two hot guys like me and I don’t know what to do)
