They crept down several flights of stairs, Daryl leading the two of them on a more circuitous route than he would take during the day. The professors and prefects tended to patrol the main paths through the school more heavily than others. Even still, no path was completely safe. As they reached the lower floors Daryl heard a faint sound and reached out to grab Stiles’ shirt. He stopped short and pulled his roommate flush against the wall, staying absolutely still and straining his ears.
Stiles hadn’t immedietly caught the sound Daryl had. One minute they were walking, the next he was up against a wall. At first he was going to question Daryl when the sound finally reached him. A hand shot over his mouth to try and keep himself quiet as he attempted to keep as still as possible. They were so close too, damnit. He looked to Daryl, only going to move if he moved.
Daryl wasn’t moving. Daryl wasn’t even breathing. He stood still as stone against the wall, his arm still extending out and pressing Stiles’ chest back. The sound of footsteps was growing louder, from a faint noise to a very clear pad as whomever it as moved down the hall towards them. There was a light coming forward, and Daryl could only stare intently at the ever-brightening glow and hope the person holding the light source didn’t pass this way.
From down the passage, around a corner, a figure appeared. It was a prefect, and not one from their own house. They held a light up, looking back and forth idly as they passed the mouth of the hallway that the boys stood frozen inside of. Then the prefect passed on, the light dimming to darkness once again as they continued down the hallway perpendicular to Stiles and Daryl. They must not have been close enough to see, or else the prefect wasn’t really looking. Never the less Daryl didn’t ease up his hold until the footsteps had fully faded, and they were surrounded by darkness again.
Stiles might’ve lost a few years off his life. Only when the footsteps were silent, too distant to hear, did Stiles give out a relieved breathe that hadn’t realized he’d been holding. He looked to Daryl and grinned brightly before whispering. “Livin’ dangerously. Dude do you have like super sonic hearing or what?”
He still was being held against the wall and he didn’t exactly make a move to get from beneath Daryl’s arm, though the guy could probably feel his heart hammering in his chest.
