SECRET IDENTITY SENTENCE STARTERS
the original idea for this shorter meme was based around the idea of a superhero / vigilante / etc trying to keep their identity a secret vs someone else talking about it in some way, but i realized halfway through that some of them are rather vague and can be used for whatever context you want to use them in, so⌠have at it lol <3
THE QUESTIONER
â we planned this in advance, why were you so late? â
â this is the third time you didnât show up⌠iâm starting to think you just donât like me. â
â ooh, whatâs in here? can i look? â
â is that a bruiseâŚ? what were you doing before you got here? â
â youâre really not as stealthy as you think, you know. iâve seen you sneak out, like, five times now. â
â isâŚis this [alias]âs maskâŚ? why do YOU have it? â
â iâm not saying youâre suspicious, iâm just saying iâve never seen you and [alias] in the same room. â
â just because youâre a disaster doesnât mean you canât be a superhero! â
â wait, youâre seriously [alias], youâre not joking? because i was only like 67% sureâ â
â âŚis this supposed to surprise me? i knew you were [alias] the whole time. â
THE QUESTIONED
â sorry iâm late! i just had to, uhâŚexercise / walk my dog / [insert horrible excuse here]. â
â iâm not missing our dates/parties/hangouts/etc on purpose, i promise! iâm just super busy! â
â no no no, donât look in there, thatâs private! â
â oh, the bruise? yeah, i just, you knowâŚran into a pole. â
â wh- sneaking out? me? no! where would i even be going? â
â thatâs not my mask! iâm just⌠borrowing it? â
â just because you havenât seen me and [alias] in the same room doesnât mean weâre the same person! â
â do you seriously think i could be a superhero? come on, iâm a mess. â
â itâs only fair that you know, so⌠iâm [alias]. surpriseâŚ? â
â âŚwhy are you laughing? iâm serious, [alias] is me! â
â you knew i was [alias] the whole time? and you didnât say anything about it?! â

PLOTTED STARTER for @holdalone
He's absolutely exhausted. That's the most notable thing about him - the fashionable young man dressed in a tartan suit and the brooch that looked like a mounted hippo head - because no amount of subtle make-up can hide those dark circles under his eyes, or the slight twitchiness in his demeanour as he walks straight into somebody.
For a moment, his heart stops. Even though he can feel the collision of their bodies, feel the coffee cup slip between his fingers as his hand unfurls, feels something scorching hot run down his leg.
" Shit, this is designer... " He mutters, forgetting in the moment who the designer even was. It doesn't matter - it shouldn't matter - because he got it as a courtesy from his boss anyway, but still, it's embarrassing. Cleaning is another thing he can't afford right now, another thing on his already ridiculous laundry list of things he has to get done. And, God he should say something to the guy he walked into.
" Sorry. Guess I wasn't looking where I was going, " He chuckles a little, same the way he always laughs at his own jokes.

hi friends!! basically, i watched the teaser trailer for season 2 of shadow and bone, got excited, began to reread the soc duology, and then these happened! or rather, i found an ancient unpublished fic i wrote after the first time i read the duology, and decided to make that a problem for everyone else! i hope you all enjoy these, you donât need to have seen the show nor read the books, i actually think many of these are fairly fandomless! i just wanted to explain my inspiration! DONâT ADD TO THIS LIST! iâll make more lists like this one! ily all, bon appetit, go forth and write or read or nap or watch tv or something!
â my goodness, youâre not nearly as stupid as you look! â
â you have all the answers right in front of you. you just need to look at it differently. â
â donât presume that you know me just because youâve heard a few rumors and read a few articles. â
â thereâs certainly more to you than meets the eye, isnât there? â
â i urge you to remember exactly who it is youâre talking to. because while others might appreciate your tone, i assure you, i do not. â
â iâm concerned that you mightnât understand what discreet means. because the path of chaos youâve just created is exactly the opposite of discreet. â
â you owe me a favour. iâm here to collect. â
â i thought it was a good time to pay you a visit. itâs been so long, after all; and we have so much to catch up on. â
â you are not your father/mother/parentâs child. not by anything other than blood, and thatâs not even on the spectrum of importance. â
â i was wrong about you. â
â you know, i was warned not to get involved with you. people insisted it was a foolâs decision. but i held out hope that youâd prove them wrong. nowâs your chance. â
â iâm not the sort of person to fuss over hurt feelings. youâre either of value to me, or youâre worthless. so prove to me that youâre not the latter. â
â you honestly think i donât know where you go each night? iâm not blind nor an idiot. i just trust your ability to return home unharmed. â
â have you told anyone else about this? â
â there are no children anymore. only survivors. childhood and innocence are luxuries afforded to the privileged. not us. â
â i offered you an opportunity once. to build a better world together. we both know how that turned out. and now, you come crawling back, begging for⌠what? mercy? forgiveness? â
â iâm with you. always. no matter what happens, i will be right by your side. do you understand? â
â weâre a team, arenât we? teams stick together. even when the leader is being a prick. â
â âŚi was really worried about you, you know. you scared me earlier. and iâm not saying it to make you feel bad, itâs just⌠promise me youâll tell me if things get bad again? â
â i canât pretend to understand all this stuff youâve got going on. but i do promise that iâll be here to help you through it all. alright? â
â thereâs a job that needs to be done before we get to work on the big task. thatâs why iâm here. youâll be helping me/us to complete both jobs. payment upon completion. â
â you and i arenât as different as you want to believe. that must be why youâre so angry. because looking at me, all that iâve done⌠itâs like looking in a mirror. isnât it? â
â people are scared. they need a leader. and right now, like it or not, theyâre looking to you. so go on. lead us. â
â youâve come up with some really insane plans over the years, but this is just defying any amount of belief. â
â look. i donât care if people underestimate me. i actually enjoy it. they see me as an idiot, they drop their guard, the end. but i need you to know that iâm not an idiot. okay? â
â people have died. we canât let that go unpunished. â
â the world is changing. and if we donât get ahead of it, then theyâll be the ones to decide what it changes into. â
â right! whatâs the plan, then? and god help the lot of us if you donât have one. â
â not all of us can afford the luxury of a conscience. â
â donât make the deadly mistake of presuming my actions reflect weakness. too many have made that same presumption. and not a single one of them lived to tell the tale. â
â youâre scared. i can tell. the shaking, the look in your eye⌠you want to run. donât. youâll waste precious time and energy, and youâll need it all if you want to live. â
â everything is gone. itâs all smoke, ruin, obliterated. is that our legacy now? our reputation? destruction, devastation, death? is that who we are? â
â weâve fought against powerful enemies before, but this is beyond that. if we want to get out of this alive, we need to be smarter, stronger, better than weâve ever been before. â
â donât forget why weâre here. thereâs far more at stake than our lives if this goes wrong. â
â youâre the only person here i trust. we need to stick together, watch each otherâs backs. just because everythingâs changed, doesnât mean we have to, too. â
â i canât think of anyone iâd rather be doing this crazy, ridiculous, nearly definitely lethal mission with. letâs go out with a bang, eh? â
â you people are completely insane. but youâre also insufferably good at this sort of thing. so letâs go save the world, shall we? â
â why are we fighting so hard to save the lives of people who hate us, anyway? â
â youâre the best there is at this sort of thing. iâd hate to see the one who got the better of you⌠â
â look at them all. going around, fussing over money, clothes, land⌠do they ever realize whatâs going on around them? do they ever see the bigger picture as we do? â
â youâre clever. good. itâs nice to have a challenge. but you should know now, youâll want to be a hell of a lot smarter than that if you want to go up against me. â
â you and i both know the risks. we both know what people like them are capable of. tell me itâs all okay, and i wonât question you. but if it isnât⌠we need to be ready. â
â itâs lonely and vicious at the top. i can handle that. but you⌠you wouldnât survive five minutes of this life. â
â you canât survive in this world without growing a thicker skin, and erasing that naive belief that you can trust anyone you meet. least of all me. â
â if youâre knocking on my door, i can only imagine it means youâre here to collect. and by your demeanour, itâs one hell of a favor youâll be asking, too. â
â i understand your anger. iâve lived with that sort of rage for many years of my life. but you need to set it aside, understand? we need you calm if we want to get out of here. â
â oh, donât get all sentimental. i saved your life because youâre worth more to me alive than dead. it doesnât signify any degree of care or affection. â
â you have one hell of an inflated ego, you know that? we were told this job was impossible. thatâs not a challenge. thatâs a fact. it is not possible. even for you. â
â iâve heard it all before. one more job. one more mission. one last heist. but thereâs always more. itâs like some sort of obsession for you. searching for another thrill. â
â enough! this is it! donât you see that?! we almost died! you almost got killed! if the saints are kind enough to save us today, itâs only so we can quit while weâre ahead! â

âWelcome to a fae party, mate. Quickest way tâ lose your shite followed by your soul.â
An absolute thrill of a time but also the kind of time where one quickly regretted anything and everything that fell in between the cracks when it came to chasing that feeling of plenty. And John? Well⌠in his defense he had started on the nightâs drinking long before the set of dryads had come on in converting the party theme for the night.
Maybe if he was about 20 years younger and his mental state was much more whole than he mightâve dabbled in the intensified emotions of pure pleasure and tongued his fair share of the fae folk. Now? Now, John just felt too old and stringy for these sorts of things.
idly as he let his hand slip from the hold to step away, he wondered if maybe that was just unfortunate.
âSuggest packinâ up and heading out yourself too.â Idly, John indicated a pair that had been watching them both that looked as if they had rolled out of the most stereotypical art school for young millennials ever. âThey get a scent, they donât typically let go that easily. Also? Donât suggest takinâ anything they offer you.â
Lord knows that wasnât something John wanted to deal with tonight.
" Seriously? Is anywhere safe these days? Does everything have to be demons and fairies and crazy little ghost things that suck out peoples souls? "
He has the sense to speak softly, but there's a boiling frustration in his voice, his body language, in the way he strains his lips into a tight smile and raises his eyebrows. There's a good moment where he looks over the other, but then he settles on searching the rest of the room instead. He's got co-workers here - and they're off in another corner, all dressed in the sorts of outfits most people would call high fashion - and it wouldn't be right to just leave them. Especially if this is dangerous.
But after a moment, the implication of that other phrase sinks in. He's being warned, and his eyes slip towards the pair across the room. He's good enough at playing it off as casual, seeing as he's also in the midst of looking for his co-workers, but still, it's concerning. They did seem to be looking in their direction.
" Great. I should check on the people I came here with first. What do you mean by tracking a scent? "

@stillllhereââ || 11. our muses are at a club and your muse has asked mine to dance with them
There was a particular reason why he never liked getting dragged to the club scene. One, it was grungy. Two, it seemed to attract a number of fairies thinking that this was the best way to score souls on the surface and John was left at the bar trying to dissuade a rather, and admittedly, attractive looking one with beautiful purple wings that he could barely perceive in the flashing lights to leave him the hell alone.
So maybe he was a little more relieved than he shouldâve been when the guy came up to him and popped the question. Maybe he noticed the effort John was trying to go through to drink in peace? Hopefully.
âThought youâd never ask, love.â Quick to play the part, John had immediately held a hand out, clearly ready to just be anywhere but here.
Not exactly how he'd wanted this night to go. And clubbing - well, it could be his thing, maybe on a different night, if he felt like he had someone safe to be with instead of a couple of co-workers who just wanted to parade the experience of knowing what places like this were actually like, and basically dragged him here because he didn't seem to come out enough.
And his idea of love was based on romance, not... sweat and alcohol and god knew what else. Alcohol never agreed with him anyway - he'd just end up throwing up on someone's shoes, and nobody wanted that, so he wasn't drinking. So all he really wants to do is dance, maybe have some guys dance a little too close for comfort, but the idea of being touched or taken by surprise was still a little too real, a little too uncomfortable. He wanted to be able to enjoy this, but tonight was making things really, really hard.
There'd been one guy that was getting obsessive, almost, hence why he'd awkwardly shimmied over to the bar, where he'd been planning on ordering another Shirley Temple, or something. But then he noticed what was going on with John, it seemed easier to just jump in instead.
He takes his hand, and as soon as they're dancing he sighs and tightens his grip slightly. It's a little tense, but not unmanageable yet.
" You looked like you needed it, " He said, in a tone warm enough that any eavesdropper wouldn't assume a double meaning. " Everyone else here seems so intense, "

âLook, if it keeps me off âer shitlist then I could care less âbout it being the tackiest thing this side oâ the grand pond.â
Probably⌠not the smartest kind of mindset to have, but all things considered with his current track record on even remembering his own nieceâs birthday this horrendous crime against fashion probably could be easily overlooked. Teenagers were easy like that!âor young adults were? A young girl of some discernible age?
Crap.
âMaybe a hatâs a better ideaâŚâ Gingerly, he hung the shirts back up. âAnd a lanyard. Everyone likes lanyards.â
" I suppose that's fair, " He said, sounding like he was thinking through a measured response. He's still biting back a comment about how 'that sort of crime against fashion might put you on her shit list. But he kept it to himself, knew there was only so much snark people could take.
" If you're going for tacky tourist trap things, I say make them as bad as possible. At least there's humour in a novelty 'this grandma loves fishing' mug or an 'I escaped New York without meeting a single rat' trucker hat. At least that way, bad taste can be ironic. And everyone does love a lanyard, "
He smiled a little wryly, glancing back at the shirts, at all the touristy souvenirs. This was a lot tougher than it seemed.
@stillllhere
âRed or blue?â Likely not the first thing anyone would expect to be asked, much less being bombarded with two of those particularly gaudily looking tourist trap shirts, but unfortunately a Scouser happened to get stuck in a rather unfortunate predicament back home. One with his rather lovely niece and the fact that if he missed yet another birthday well⌠he was pretty sure heâd never be allowed over for Christmas ever again. âThink she still likes blue but honestly, red could workâŚâ
" If you want my honest opinion, they're both hideous. Thatâs putting it lightly, "
There was a playful yet totally judgemental hint to his voice, and judging by his suspiciously raised eyebrow, he wouldn't exactly recommend either under different circumstances. He was meant to help with shopping, not wasting money on something cheaply made, badly designed and in a strong primary colour.
But there was no point being a total fashion pessimist, was there? He sighed, crossed his arms, let his eyes roll between each of them a few times, then smiled.
" I think blue might be nice. It's a lot more subtle. And could is always dangerous, "

âShit shit, are you okay?!â
âGive me your belongings and you wonât get hurt. Sound fair?â
âWell look what the cat dragged in.â
âNever thought Iâd see your face again.â
âAre you drunk? Hey, you canât be walking around like that, be careful!â
âYou look like bad newsâŚ.â
âI hope Iâm not being too straightforward, but are you single?â
âNice to meet you.â
