Let me start out by saying, I love Taiwanese dramas because they are so fucking cheesy I can’t help myself. To paraphrase the now disbanded 2NE1, I am devastated please send hugs, they’re so bad, bad that they’re so good, good. And when Netflix put a shitload of them in their library I rejoiced because I could stream it without dealing with Viki’s buggy app’s nonsense. This was the second one I watched but feel I need to talk about it first because it’s not the worst drama I’ve ever seen but a very close second.
Okay, so this drama is a train wreck of plot holes, random plot points, easily fixable problems, unnecessary scenes, eye rolls galore, and “What?! Are you fucking serious?! Who does that?! WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE?!” So let’s jump right in. Warning spoilers ahead because I give no fucks, this drama is piss poor.
Lu Tian Xing (Aaron Yan) is your typical rich drama douche bag and CEO of a major ad firm. Burnt out from his job he announces his vacation via press conference that is supposed to be for something else. Either way, he runs from his boss and underlings and ends up in a park where small advertising company OZ is shooting some commercial. OZ is run by Tao Le Si (Tai Li) with whom Lu Tian Xing ran into at the very beginning. But he is Clark Kent’ed and flattened his hair and put on glasses. However, he is instantly recognized but talks his way out of it and claims his name is Xiao Lu. Everyone buys it and we’re off with the Prince and the Pauper kind of thing only it’s one guy not two, which initially caught my interest.
So Lu Tian Xing as Xiao Lu begins working with OZ during his leave of absence from his real job because he wants to help OZ which is floundering and the reason he got into advertising in the first place. But everyone hates Lu Tian Xing at OZ because they think he’s just gonna take it over so he hides as Xiao Lu. He still shows up as arrogant douche Lu Tian Xing to help when his boss Lance ( Kao Ying Hsuan) does underhanded prick things to fuck shit up for OZ because he’s a shit dick. And this goes on for half of the series and he and Tao Le Si fall in love and the director Leo (Jack Li) loves Tao Le Si and triangle shit and blah, blah, blah. Then everyone finds out Xiao Lu is actually Lu Tian Xing and his relationship with Tao Le Si falls apart because Lu Tian Xing has been a total dick to her and he has to win her back; like he is a super douche to her before she finds out he is Xiao Lu. Like he assaults her with a forced kiss and like demands she like him because he confessed his love to her. “I like you so you have to like me too.” And I am there like, “Are you fucking kidding, bro?” Real fuck boy shit. But anyway, had they stuck to this plot the drama would have been fine. However, after his stalker becomes basically paralyzed and the story becomes convoluted and completely pointless. And here we enter spoilerville.
Li Huan Huan (Beatrice Fang) is Lance’s sister and totally in love with Lu Tian Xing, like creepily obsessed with him. I shit you not, she says at one point when she sees him as Xiao Lu, “But you smell like Tian Xing.” Who does that? How is that not a red flag that this bitch needs professional help? Either way, he only sees her as a sister. So she fawns all over him while he is trying to win back Tao Le Si and generic love triangle crap except everyone is annoying and stupid. Then Huan Huan falls down a hill that isn’t really that steep and loses the use of her legs and this is where shit fucks up. She ends up in a wheelchair and they blame Lu Tian Xing for it but she literally pulled away from his hand. She is clearly at fault but okay.
Lance, being the giant asshole tool that he is, tells Huan Huan that if she wants to keep Lu Tian Xing by her side she needs to never stand up again basically use Tian Xing’s guilt to gain his love. Meanwhile, their mom, Mama Li uses Tian Xing’s love for Tao Le Si against him to keep him close to Huan Huan. Like steals Tian Xing’s shares of OZ and threatens to shut it down if he doesn’t marry Huan Huan. Because according to her you don’t marry for love because it’s selfish but ya know being a giant cunt and forcing someone who doesn’t love her to marry your daughter because she likes him isn’t selfish. WHAT THE FUCK?!
So Lance and Mama Li are manipulative dick holes and eventually warp Huan Huan from a spoiled princess to a spoiled sociopath and sit and wonder why. They even have Tian Xing followed and eventually he like, “fuck this shit, I’m out!” and tries to run away with Le Si but they stop him. In a last ditch effort, Mama Li offers Tian Xing control over their family company that Lance is throwing a shit fit for because it should be him and wah, wah, wah. So finally Lu Tian Xing agrees to marry Huan Huan because he literally cannot win. And at the wedding Piss Baby Lance objects and calls out Tian Xing’s motives citing he is only marrying her for the company shares. Dude, you literally just stopped thi dude from running off with the girl he actually loves because you want him to marry your deranged sister and you have the balls to say it’s because he wants company shares?! ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?! WHEN THE FUCK WAS THAT AN ACTUAL ISSUE? WHO THE FUCK IS WRITING THIS?! WHAT THE FUCK DOES THAT HAVE TO DO WITH ANYTHING?!
And this is literally the whole rest of the series, Lance bitching because Tian Xing is gonna be the major shareholder in the Li family ad company even though all he wants to do is bang Tao Le Si and work at OZ. But Lance is making a big deal out of it and Mama Li is wondering why shit is fucked up and blames Tao Le Si while Carie is wondering why this is even in the show? Are the characters really this fucking stupid? Who wrote this because they need to have any and all writing implements taken away from them because their writing is an insult to everyone who has ever written anything ever. Except maybe that dumb fucking bitch that wrote 50 Shades. But I digress, can someone explain to me the second half of this drama because I can’t figure it out. Why? Just why?
So yeah, this drama is a fucking mess. The ending, like the whole second half of the drama is stupid and makes no sense. Lance throws a shit fit because his sister won’t give him her shares. Lance throws a shit fit because they’re giving him the shares. Lance drops to his knees in the rain and screams at the sky for some reason. Why did no one beat the shit out of Lance? Why the fuck are the OZ people playing baseball? Why did the secondary character Helen end up with that creepy guy who literally sexually harasses her the entire fucking time? Why the fuck did Carie watch this entire series? I can’t talk about this shit anymore. In conclusion, don’t watch this entire drama unless you hate yourself or need to punish your brain.

There are times in every woman’s life when she is unemployed and marathons the shit out of Korean media and one actress at first annoys the ever loving crap out of her and she swears off that actress forever. But then, one day, years later after the woman finds a job and is no longer devoting 24/7 to Korean dramas/movies she finds a drama that intrigues her and despite the fact that the sworn off actress is in it, decides, “Eh, what the hell.” For me, that actress was Jang Nara and that drama was One More Happy Ending.
And I now regret swearing off Jang Nara. Word to the wise, don’t watch the movie Oh! Happy Day, it’s horrible.
Jang Nara stars as Han Mi Mo former idol turned matchmaker for divorcees as she herself is a divorcee. The drama begins with Mi Mo believing her boyfriend is going to propose. However, when she gets there it turns out that her boyfriend is proposing just not to her but rather her rival in her former group now actress Goo Seul Ah (Cameo Dara from 2NE1). The ensuing scene is captured by gossip journalist Song Soo Hyuk (Jung Kyung Ho). After Soo Hyuk “saves” Mi Mo from a mistaken suicide attempt the two return home to discover they are neighbors. Then after a couple drinks they discover they were childhood friends/crushes. Drunken antics follow including an attempted drunk marriage.
However, that fizzles out and Mi Mo begins dating Soo Hyuk’s best friend Dr. Goo Hae Joon (Kwon Yool). Though Mi Mo and Soo Hyuk always seem to find themselves together denying their feelings for one another the entire time. The drama also follows Mi Mo’s three best friends left over from their days as idols. Go Dong Mi (Yoo In Na) the frumpy school teacher who has no luck in love despite her earnest attempts. Baek Da Jung (Yoo Da In), Mi Mo’s business partner who married early and now on the verge of divorce. And Hong Ae Ran (Seo In Young of Jewelry) an internet model who is still trying to cling bitterly to her former idol status.
If you have ever seen a drama, I think you can pretty much guess where all these stories will lead. And while I abso-fucking-lutely loved this drama there were a few things that bugged me about it. The Conan cameo made no fucking sense. Like I get it he was in Korea doing the touristy talk show host thing, but in the show, there was no rhyme or reason for it. What I mean to say is, there is no connection, aside from him basically saying what another character had said, to the actual story. Had they set it up that Mi Mo watched Conan or something then I could see, “yeah okay her brain is fucked up.” But it’s literally random. The other thing that bugged me was the total under utilization of Sandara Park. I feel like they could have used her and her character a bit more. They set up her and Mi Mo’s rivalry and it falls flat. Much like with Conan, she really adds nothing to the overall narrative of the drama. Aside of course from them being the cause of their groups break up. But overall it’s a time waste. Mi Mo and Soo Hyuk could have met in another way and it didn’t have to involve her at all. The other, other thing that bugged me was the body shaming around Ae Ran. Bitch had literally no body fat and they were calling her old and fat. The fuck, Korea?
But aside from that the drama is pretty good. I love the interactions between the friends. I love female character interactions that are friendship based and not petty, cliche girl fight crap. But it’s not overly Lifetime movie sappy. Also, because of this drama I did totally buy a Kigurumi unicorn onesie, which I wear all the time now at home. I would abso-fucking-lutely recommend this drama as it is very, very funny. And Jang Nara is adorable and unemployed crazy me was a fucking idiot.

Ms. Temper and Nam Jung Gi is a drama about how men are shitty and assholes when it comes to business and the women who have to deal with and clean up their bullshit and you can’t convince me otherwise.
Nam Jung Gi (Yoon Sang Hyun) is a single father supporting his son (Choi Hyun Joon), father (Im Ha Ryong) and crazy hot, lazy, drifter brother (Hwang Chan Sung, yes, of 2PM). Nam Jung Gi lives timidly to avoid conflict but this means he is perpetually stepped on. He works for Lovely Cosmetics, a subcontracting company for the ruthless Gold Chemicals. After his department head or something is arrested for fraud or something, Jung Gi is given the promotion he deserves and has to now present a product he created to a team leader from Gold, Ok Da Jung (Lee Yo Won). During preparation for their presentation, the team from Lovely actively insult Da Jung, literally behind her back after mistaking her for a secretary. So she rejects their product outright, because, I mean wouldn’t you?
Rather than admit defeat, Jung Gi tries to persuade Da Jung to accept his product. This of course leads him to humiliate himself after he misunderstands some things and ends up naked in hotel hallway. The second hand embarrassment is almost too much. These two will of course have many run ins after this because not only does Da Jung move in next door to Jung Gi, she also is hired at Lovely after she quits Gold after she’s finally had enough with her boss Director Kim’s (Son Jong Hak) epic sexist bullshit and underhanded business practices. Under her guidance, Lovely Cosmetics goes from subcontracting firm to a real cosmetic company with their own line of products. However, the road to success isn’t as an easy one.
This was probably one of the most aggravating rom-coms I had ever seen. To just watch the underhanded business practices and evil characters made me wanna punch someone. And as I said at the beginning, this drama is all about how men make business into a gross perverted shit show and run by greed. Capitalism at its finest. It’s not a wonder women are labeled as “bitches” when this is how the world operates and men with power treat them like shit. Ok Da Jung is probably one of the coolest characters in a drama. She’s smart and knows how to play the game cleanly even when the deck is stacked against her. She is a little cold at first, but after seeing all the crap she’s put up with, it’s no wonder. But she does warm up a bit after her time and Lovely and working with people who care for one another and not their own selfish gain.
What I like about this drama is that it’s wasn’t a typical rom-com. It really didn’t focus on entirely on the budding romance between Ok Da Jung and Nam Jung Gi. Most of it you have to infer. But you can see the effect the one has on the other. She becomes warmer towards others and he begins to stand up for himself more. The best parts though are her interactions with Nam Jung Gi’s family. Especially after his son “falls in love” with her. And how she uses Hwang Chan Sung for little odds and ends. He wasn’t shirtless nearly enough. I love you, Chan Sung. Call me!
But anyway, this was actually not the drama I was expecting but I did love the crap out of it. It deals with a lot of women in the work place issues and does it very well. Trigger warning there is an attempted rape scene. Just so you know. All-in-all it was a very interesting drama and if you like getting mad at evil characters and watching them get theirs in the end, this might be a good fit.

As we all know, it is always a good idea to put your best foot forward so I am gonna ease back into this review thing by starting with my favorite drama so far. I am gonna keep it hella basic because I don’t wanna give too much away like I used to. Also, little rusty but I did my best-ish.
Queen In Hyun’s Man follows the story of up and coming actress Choi Hee Jin (Yoo In Na) and Kim Boong Do (Ji Hyun Woo) a scholar from the 1600s who is trying to reinstate Queen In Hyun back into power after she is deposed and replaced for some stuff that the drama doesn’t bother to go into but if you want you can look up the history of that. So by drama style coincidence, Hee Jin is auditioning for the role of Queen In Hyun in an upcoming drama. The King being played by popular actor and Hee Jin’s cheating ex, of course, Han Dong Min (Kim Jin Woo). Hilarity ensues all over the place with that, trust me.
Back to 1600, Boong Do is given a talisman, created by this super awesome Monk, by some girl he knows who’s an entertainer, I honestly don’t remember her name. Either way, after he defends the real Queen In Hyun from assassins sent by her replacement Lady Jang, he goes to the palace to give a letter from Queen In Hyun to the king and is attacked by palace officials loyal to Lady Jang. So this dude’s about to totally stab Boong Do but then Boong Do disappears into thin air. Where does he go? The exact spot he was in just 300ish years into the future to modern day Seoul. Which is coincidentally where they’re filming the Queen In Hyun drama where he meets Hee Jin. So basically, Boong Do discovers that his rad talisman transports him to the future when his life is in danger and about to die and saying the words on it bring him back to his time. This plays a crucial role in the whole drama and creates hella issues. But as you can guess, they perpetually run into one another and only Hee JIn knows he’s a time traveler and she helps cover for him whenever he shows up and crushes ensue. Shenanigans happen. Typical rom-com stuff. If you wanna see what I mean, watch it.
So, why is this, according to me, the best drama ever? Oh wait, I only said it was my favorite I didn’t say it was the best but it totally is because firstly, it breaks almost all the rules of a typical rom-com dram. The first five episodes are not filled with petty squabbles between the leads who will eventually fall in love. They actually like each other from start to finish!
What? A drama about a healthy, although complex solely because the dude is technically 300 years older and is back and forth between time, relationship and not two people who hate each other but one starts liking the other because one time the other person wasn’t a dick? You can’t be serious. I am serious. Super serious. It’s fucking awesome.
Secondly, there really isn’t anything complicating their relationship.
What? No second lead being a dick and fucking shit up because some weird jealously bullshit?
Well, there is a bit of that going on but it’s really between Queen In Hyun and Lady Jang. Like one is literally trying to kill the other one while also trying to kill the male lead since he’s defending her. And there is a small bit with Dong Min but it’s not evil scheming and eye rolling convoluted planning to break people up. Although that’s more in drama dramas than rom-coms. Either way, none of that.
Three, the plot doesn’t drag on forever. As I said before the first five episodes aren’t constant, “beat your audience over the head with the idea that the leads hate each other” scenes. The story arc actually moves! Oh, dude is in 2014ish Seoul, oh he’s learned about his fate, oh he goes back and fixes it, oh the story line isn’t based entirely on the annoying banter of the leads but actually has other shit going on. Shit is actually happening while the leads fall in love. HOLY SHIT! Plot and romance!
Four, Yoo In Na isn’t playing the bitch! The only reason I decided to watch this drama was because I had finished rewatching The Greatest Love and You From the Stars desperately needed to see Yoo In Na as a good guy not a scheming bitch for a change. I don’t remember her from Secret Garden and I’m not gonna rewatch SG because that drama was so fucking slow. So yeah, I needed her not to be a bitch nor forgettable. And dude, she nails it. She’s hilarious and “totes adorbs.” Seriously, that flip off from episode one is my new “fuck you” gif. And her curry making scene is hilarious. Not to mention all her, SPOILER ALERT “use Boong Do’s ignorance about the modern era to kiss him scenes.” Fucking love it.
So if you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it. If you like it, you’re welcome. If you don’t then your opinion greatly differs from mine and that’s okay too. But we probably can’t be friends.
In conclusion, why was the alternate ending not the real ending holy fucking shit and I can buy the time travel aspect but the cell phone thing at the end... totally crap! No way that would have worked! I’m only half-serious about that last bit.

So I may or may not have actually been watching a boat load of dramas lately and aside from spamming gifs and picture sets to my personal blog found here, I have not done much in the way of hardcore talking about how much I have loved them. Aside from talking them out with my mom who totally watches them with me because I have made her a hardcore drama addict to the point where she totally downloaded the viki app and is picking out dramas to watch. So yeah, I might start reviewing dramas again. I’m just wondering if anyone is still around and gives a shit? I mean I will probably do it anyway because why not?

Let’s try this again: I watched the first ep & while it’s not really my thing, Yeon Jin Goo as the male lead is enjoyable. I mean he’s only 17 but it’s nice to see him starting to get lead roles now instead of “main-character-as-a-kid” parts.
I read the manhwa and found it very enjoyable. I hope they translated it well in drama form. Although, knowing Korea they will drag it out longer than they need to. It was a web comic so it was told in short snippets so to get a 16+ series out of it... We shall see..

Okay, so, I am not gonna waste time talking about my life and just get into this movie because I am very uninteresting as of late. Battle Royale or as I wanted to keep calling it “A Battle Royale with Cheese.” Pulp Fiction no? is like Lord of the Flies on Japanese steroids. Except rather than character development and a slow decent into chaos we get meaningless back stories, random characters and epic deaths and Monty Python and the Holy Grail styled blood splatter.
Apparently, in the future of Japan adults fear children. We are told this and only briefly shown this when a student slashes the leg of a teacher. So then we find out in retaliation to this teen outbreak of crime and lawlessness the government passes a law that no one seems to know about but does called BR: Battle Royale. Basically, the send a random class to a deserted island and they are to kill each other off. Last one standing wins. You know, a very obvious reaction to a problem with teenagers.
And so this is all you need to know about this movie but I will go on. So the teacher who was slashed in the leg, Kitano (Takeshi Kitano) sends his class? Or a former class there. It’s not clear. He kills off a couple students then sends off students one by one according to class rank with their stuff and a military bag of supplies and weapons such as guns, axes, grenades, etc. or useless crap meant to be used as a weapon like a pot lid. They are also outfitted with a nifty little collar that will explode if they fuck up or don’t kill each other at the end of three days. Oh they have to kill each other in three days.
As I mentioned before this story itself is a jumbled mess and basically it’s just pointless violence and “wow that escalated quickly.” But it technically centers around orphan or half-orphan Shuya Nanahara (Tatsuya Fujiwara aka Light from live action Death Note) and his love interest Noriko Nakagawa (Aki Maeda) who team up with “transfer student” Shogo Kawada (Taro Yamamoto) as they try to beat the game without having to kill anyone and avoiding the psycho transfer student Kazuo Kiriyama (Masanobu Ando) who is happy to kill everyone and girl psycho Mitsuko Souma (Kou Shibasaki aka Dororo). So that’s basically it. A story about school children who quickly turn on one another and willingly kill their friends and classmates proving once and for all blood is thicker than friendly bonds.
From a writing stand point this movie is a mess. Nothing is really full explained and the background stories are somewhat disjointed and miss the point of adding depth to the characters. It’s easy to watch the teenagers kill each other since there is no real connection between audience and characters. New characters are brought in and killed off in five minutes so while the deaths are gruesome in nature it’s easy to move on to the next since oh well that person was solely a student number.
I will admit it’s interesting to see the different ways kids are taken out but it’s basically a metaphoric movie depicting the inherent evil within all of us and how quickly we can sell out the morals we are thought and how quickly we as a species can descend into chaos in the blink of an eye. And in some respects how some people refuse morals all together and kill almost for the fun of it and not solely as a means to an end to survive. What I mean is there are characters in this book who kill to survive because they don’t want to be killed first, those who kill to kill, kids who refuse to fight and kill themselves outright, and then the ones who try to outsmart the system. Story-wise, it’s a mess. Metaphorically, it’s a masterpiece. Does that make sense? It’s crazy and I liked it and I am gonna watch the sequel because I heard it’s awful.

And we’re back with another riveting review of a drama I was gonna watch a million years ago with my mom but she backed out and I forged on ahead without her. Speaking of my mom, her review of Wish To See You Again is better than mine so I will have to rewrite mine so as not to be outdone by her. Oh, and I have to write a review of Never Give up, Dodo... One thing at a time.
So this psychology heavy drama follows, famed author, radio DJ, party/playboy Jang Jae Yul (Jo In Sung) and his courtship of Dr. Ji Hae Soo (Gong Hyo Jin). So in the beginning, there’s a guy getting out of prison. His name is Jang Jae Beom (Yang Ik Joon) who is Jae Yul’s older brother. Jae Beom leaves prison and goes to find his brother and stabs him in the shoulder a bunch with a fork because, you know, why not. Either way, brother goes back to jail. So blah blah blah.
Moving ahead a year or so, Hae Soo meets Jae Yul on a tv talk show debating about the psychology of murder or something because Jae Yul’s book romanticize murder or something, I dunno. She wasn’t even supposed to be there her Sunbae Dr. Jo “Uncle Jo” Dong Min (Sung Dong Il) was supposed to go but he makes her go. Either way, Hae Soo is not having any of Jae Yul’s bullshit but Jae Yul’s all about it, ‘bout it and pursues it. They meet up at a dance club coincidentally, and end up chasing an angry off his meds schizophrenic patient of Hae Soo’s. Everyone faints, it’s a mess.
Long story short after some messy plagiarizing scandal with his girlfriend or fuck buddy, who knows, Jae Yul ends up living in the same house as Hae Soo, Dong Min and their buddy Park Soo Kwang (Lee Kwang Soo) who happens to have Tourette’s. And as you can guess Jae Yul pursues Hae Soo even more much to her dismay. Hae Soo has anxiety about love and romantic relationships based on a minor trauma from her childhood. Nothing bad but witnessed something that made her believe love was bad. But eventually he grows on her and they get together yay! Okinawa vacation scenes!!!
During their budding relationship, we learn Jae Yul is from an abusive household and his brother is in jail for the murder of their abusive step-father. It is because of this Jae Yul has a special bond with high school student and wanna be writer Han Kang Woo (EXO-K’s D.O.). So throughout the drama we as an audience are introduced to different mental disorders and some fictional treatments as well as the mystery surrounding the death of Jae Yul and Jae Beom’s step father and why Jae Beom is so hellbent on getting back at his brother. Not to mention the growing complicated relationship between Jae Yul and his protege Kang Woo . And that’s where I end my review.
I loved this drama for a number of reasons. The first being that it centers around mental health issues including but not limited to anxiety, Tourette’s, and schizophrenia. As someone who has a wide range of anxieties, I think they did a nice job dealing with it. At no point does anyone tell Hae Soo to “get over it.” I think they could have done more to show what a real anxiety attack is like though since they are super fun. But what I am trying to say is that they treat mental illness as illnesses and not down play that as many often do.
What also really impressed me was that it also covered the treatment of a trans woman who was being beaten by her male relatives. Not only do they not misgender her. I think Hae Soo does once and the brother does but other than that they call her, her with NO problem. (Never misgender a trans person ever. Jesus wouldn’t and neither should you!) Anyway, Gong Hyo Jin delivers are very powerful speech to the woman who insists on returning to her family despite their numerous beating. Basically, she says, you need to get the fuck away from them before they kill you. Your first priority is you. It’s delivered to the camera as if she is not only speaking to the character but anyone who may be watching who is in a similar situation. It’s such a moving scene and really important as it highlights the abuse that members of the transgender community face usually within their own family. Masterfully delivered by Gong Hyo Jin. She’s in the top 10 of my favorite Korean actresses!
Anyway, this is a great drama and I very much enjoyed it. There is actually a lot going on within the story so it doesn’t drag like most other dramas where it gets draggy because Korean drama writers stretch out the sexual tension instead of telling a more compelling tale. This one is pretty freaking good.

Asian Dramas. (like I needed another excuse to curl up with a cup of coffee on a cold evening and let my mind de-stress)
These “mini series” take place in 16-22 episodes and are similar to a Soap Opera, but unlike soap operas they actually have a beginning, middle and END.
At times it seems like the end will never get there but when it does you have this void you must fill with another drama because most have happy endings and don’t we all need happy endings? You do need to make sure you can give the drama your attention as they are all subbed and unless you happen to be fluent in Korean, Japanese or Chinese, you need to read the dialog. In retrospect, I do not feel that this detracts from the enjoyment of these Dramas.
The most recent Drama viewed is “Wish to See You Again”, a Taiwanese offering of 16 episodes. (A Korean offering may drag the story into 20-22 episodes but we can discuss the snails pace of some Korean Dramas at a later date)
The main characters meet when Xu Le, a successful author, has a severe case of writers block. He meets, Neng Xian, an intern at the hotel he has checked into in an attempt to overcome his lack of words. She mistakes the smell from his room as the possibility of a dead body and enters the room to see him with a ketchup covered knife and thinks he is attempting suicide. She runs to stop him and the moment he touches her hand his writers block leaves. Unfortunately as soon as the grip is broken the words once again leave him.
However, the interweaving of their lives has begun and develops into a delightful story. Mixed in with their story is the stories of Xu Le’s childhood friends and their love lives. Of course as is with the case in most Drama’s their lives are already interconnected. Amazing in a city the size of Taipei, where this story unfolds, that all of the characters have connections to each other. But that is what makes the story so much fun.
The other characters are Xu Le's childhood friends, Ah Hao ( a name that you will NEVER forget) and Xiao Ma. Ah Hao is a formerly rich kid who moved to the USA directly after graduation with his father and with hopes to eventually take over the family business. Things didn't work out as planned and he returned to Taiwan penniless and drowning in self pity. Xiao Ma is the son of the owner of the Sherwood Hotel (where Xu Le went to overcome his writers block) Even though Xiao Ma is slated to become the manger of the hotel he finds that working for his overly anal older brother is not great.
It is in this hotel that Neng Xian meets Xu Le and is eventually hired by Xiao Ma to work in Pubic Relations. It is when the Public Relations department is planning some big event that they bring in Lu Yi, a current magazine writer sent to review the plans for the event. But guess what? She also happens to not only be a former classmate of the three friends but also a jilted ex-fiance of Ah Hao. Lu Yi is exceptionally pretty and quickly catches the eye of Xiao Ma. You might think that she would be a stuck up bitch but surprisingly is not but oh does she want some pay back on Ah Hao. Rounding out this little cast of characters is Neng Xian's quiet older sister, Neng Zhen, who has a major crush on Ah Hao and is a huge fan of Xu Le's novels.
Did I not tell you that this was insanely interrelated?
One thing that is a real annoyance is the ridiculous amount of times that the name Ah Hao is repeated in this drama. We actually decided that it would be a great drinking game to take a sip every time his name was spoken. However we did not want to die of alcohol poisoning as the name was just used over, and over, and over and over again.
Of course the main gist is like any good love story, ages old and true to form.
Boy meets girl, loses girl and gets her back again. Happy ending. Ahhhhh.

Do your eyes deceive you? No. I am legit writing a drama review. Holy shit! I know we will throw confetti later, probably. No, let's not. Okay so recently and some of you may also experience this, where you miss dramas. And need to rewatch them because 16 hours are easy to come by and waste. Needless to say I made my mom rewatch Wish to See You Again which is by far my favorite Taiwanese drama. So before you start wondering what the fuck this has to do with the actual drama I will be reviewing Romantic Princess, I will tell you if you let me holy shit get off my back!
Anyway, after watching WtSYA I decided my mom needed to be introduced to the genre known as idol dramas. I think WtSYA is technically an idol drama because 3/4ths of the Taiwanese F4 star in it. But no, I mean a real, over-the-top Taiwanese idol drama. She really doesn't like incredibad stuff so I couldn't show her anything with Rainie Yang in it. So I remembered this one from my early drama days when I was fresh out of college and unemployed and reading manga 24/7 and just discovering dramas were a thing. Point being, this is a very basic, easy to watch idol drama that will ease even the snoodiest of tastes into the overly acted and ridiculous world of Taiwanese idol dramas.
Like I said this is a very basic drama plot. Mai Qiu Sui aka Xiao Mai (Angela Zhang) is a poor girl wishing she was magically actually a princess or some rich man's daughter in hopes to leave her destitute life. Holy shit guess what she totally is. Turns out Xiao Mai was adopted by her current parents from a human trafficker who kidnapped her from the super, uber, ultra rich Huangfu family. Her proof, heart shaped butt birthmark. Yeah, I dunno what idol drama writers are smoking either but I want some.
So now she is getting exactly what she's always wished for but isn't too happy about it since it means leaving her adopted parents (Bu Xue Liang and Phoebe Huang) behind. Drama, drama, annoying tears blah, blah, blah. So now Xiao Mai is the heir to this crazy fortune and has her choice of four eligible bachelors who have been selected previously to be groomed to become Huangfu Xiong aka EMP's (Gu Bao Ming) successor. They're all cousins, distantly I hope. So she first meets Nan Feng Jin (Wu Chun) and immediately take a dislike to each other when he insinuates she's a fake. Yeah, she's gonna end up with him. It's not a spoiler, it's a fact.
Initially, even though she is now a fancy shmancy, real life heriess, Xiao Mai is not happy that she can't live with her adopted parents (real ones are dead, shock), so she visits them often which pisses EMP off so he fixes it so they are shipped to Brazil. Bye bye, adopted parents, hello overly involved grandpa who is determined to marry her off to his successor and basically sell her like a human trafficker.
I mentioned she and Jin are "enemies who are gonna eventually hook up" right? Because they are. So when Xiao Mai meets one of the other potential successors, Jin's cousin Cai (Calvin Chen) who's only goal in life is to drink beer, party and bang chicks, he sets up a little prank for Jin. He convinces Xiao Mai to get engaged with Jin in hopes that Jin will rebel against EMP. If she does Cai will give her 5 million NTD (approx. $158,000) to pay off EMP whom she promised to pay for the house he gave her adopted parents. Of course she agrees and the engagement is basically set when Xiao Mai gets close to Jin and realizes he doesn't want to be EMP's successor and be a businessman in his own right. Of course this new revelation moves Xiao Mai's heart and she begins to like Jin and Jin too has begun to like her. Told ya, they're gonna hook up. However, Jin holds back his feelings because if he does go for her he knows he will be trapped being EMP's successor. So some shit happens and Xiao Mai breaks the engagement and her deal with Cai.
So as the story progresses Xiao Mai eventually finds herself engaged to Cai even though neither of them want that. Basically, it's a move between Cai and EMP to get Jin to admit he likes Xiao Mai and visa versa. Eventually they do hook up but have to hide it so they don't end up engaged again. However, they aren't very good at hiding it and EMP figures them out but won't come out and say it and they won't admit anything and he does everything to try and get hard proof. There's a whole bit about money rewards for proof. Yeah... However, drama really kicks up when Gong Mo Li, a woman claiming to be the REAL heir and granddaughter shows up with her eyes apparently on Jin. And this is where I will end my summary.
Set in, clearly a hotel, Romantic Princess is a fun and often ridiculous ride. But unlike most idol dramas, no one gets kidnapped (aside from the initial babynapping), no one gets rain flu (a must in romantic dramas), and no one gets amnesia from an impossible explosion. There is however, weird imagination scenes, over acting and crazy weird effects that pull you out of the scene but are actually pretty funny when you get used to them. It's not the best drama you will ever see and the storyline is nothing new nor involved but it is what it is and it's not a bad way to waste 13 hours. The leads are super cute together and, as I said aside from the overly silliness of some of the scenes it's a fairly light hearted and funny drama.
Real quick though, is Angela Zhang like out of the acting world now? Because it doesn't look like she's been in anything since. I mean she's not a strong actress but she's pretty decent as far as idol drama actresses go. I mean she was nominated for an award for one of her dramas. Or is she strictly sticking to singing because she's actually very talented on that front. Just wondering. But I would be interested to know. You're adorable Angela Zheng come back!
Anyway, like I said not a bad drama but not amazing. Watch it or not, I don't care. I will be back later with a review of Chinese web series Never Give Up, Dodo since I have been muddling through that on and off. And I have been hounding my mom for her review of WtSYA since I wanted her to write one for my 4 year anniversary. Oh well. That's all from me.

Four years ago I post this mission statement and began this blog which, I totally neglect now but I update it... sometimes... Anyway, thank you all for a great 4 years. And I will be adding more reviews from time to time. I have three days off coming up and totally plan on watching a drama or two. I also plan on rewatching some dramas I haven't reviewed yet to refresh my memory and review them too. Also, as a 4 year anniversary treat, I convinced my mom to write a review of a drama for you all to enjoy. So, you know, that's a thing.
And we're back. My flag counter went MIA like a month ago and I was very depressed about it since well, I had collected a lot of countries on there. 140something if I recall. Very sad anyway, here's another crappy movie review for all my loyal totally forgot to unfollow me followers. Don't mistake this, you guys are awesome.
So okay is this movie for freaking real? Quite possibly the cheesiest movie I've seen in a very long time.
Mi Soo (Han Hyo Joo) is a bad ass doctor who thinks she's the bestest doctor in all of Korea if not the world. When I patient comes into the ER writhing in pain, Mi Soo dismisses the woman because she assumes the woman is simply a victim of domestic abuse because of the woman's brash and combative husband. Bitch totally misdiagnoses the woman and sends her and the husband on their way.
Now because Mi Soo totally fucked up, obviously she is facing a malpractice suit and basically gonna lose her license. Did I mention the patient lady is dying? Yeah she is and Mi Soo missed it. However, if she can get a character reference against the husband of the dying lady she might save her ass. This is where the initial main couple contact is because Kang Il was attacked by the suing husband so Mi Soo goes to bug him about it. Kang Il is like, nah it's cool. Dude punched me because he loves his wife so on and so forth. Note, Kang Il is a widower who's wife die during surgery in the beginning of the movie. Oh the drama.
This begins the movie where Mi Soo stalks Kang Il to get him to testify against the suing husband. She even goes so far as to volunteer as a medic for the fire/rescue squad in hopes of seducing Kang Il. Take note girls, nothing is sexier than stalking! (Read in your most sarcastic voice).
I honestly don't know what else to say about this other than Mi Soo stalks Kang Il to get him to like her so he will testify for her in her malpractice suit and it's difficult to say when the game stops and when she actually ends up falling for him. I mean she she even tells her friend that if she can't get him to help her peacefully she will just seduce him. Like, seriously? The fuck?
This movie was really messed up and of course they throw in drama bits to distract you from the fact that Mi Soo is only approaching Kang Il not because she likes him but because she needs something from him. I mean she does redeem herself to some effect towards the end and what not but I mean 90% of the movie she is just clinging to Kang Il in the most obvious way that screams, "Hi, I am not serious about this guy." But somehow she wears him down or something. I dunno, maybe I would have liked it better if the writers or whoever focused more on Mi Soo's personal growth and the actual feelings she had for Kang Il. And Kang Il maybe be less of a stereotypical brooding widower. Anyway, this movie was funny in it's own right but kind of sucked. And the ending, what the hell? The whole surgery thing they never develop. Did no one else notice that? Or did I miss something? The acting was pretty good but I dunno the writing was pretty sloppy in my opinion.
So yeah, there's my phoned in review of this really messed up movie that was reviewed pretty high for some reason on Gooddrama. Join me again later for another crappy review.

So remember like a million years ago I was gonna watch a boat load of new dramas and I was gonna be awesome and write more reviews and we were gonna be best friends again? Yeah, hahaha no. If you believed me, I am sorry I am a failure. I am a busy woman. And dramas need attention and I have a terribly short attention span. I abandoned ever finishing Coffee Prince, my grammy moves faster than that and she's 82 with bad knees. Anyway, I've been watching a shitload of movies lately for reasons. This is the first one I watched and I figured I would write about it since I have much to say about it.
Architecture 101 is one of those back and forth movies and that moves from the main characters' past to them now. We begin on a woman walking through an incomplete and falling apart home in Jeju Island. If you are reading this I assume you know Korea and know where that it. We see the woman appear again at the office of Seung Min (Uhm Tae Woong) who is, an architect of sorts. As the movie moves we get the feeling he isn't really the guy who is often in charge of designing houses. The woman, from the beginning and doing the visiting is Seo Yeon (Han Ga In), Seung Min's first love from college. At first he doesn't recognize her but soon remembers and we are transported back to the 1990s when they were in college and I was in elementary and most of you reading this, I assume, were born. Shout out to all the other old people on this site reading this who remember the 90s!
Cut to first day of Architecture 101 where a young Seo Yeon (Bae Suzy) is late. Young Seung Min (Lee Je Hoon) is immediately a fan but I mean have you seen Suzy? She's adorable. So no okay turns out she is a friend of Seung Min's senior Jae Wook (Yoo Yeon Seok) whom I will be calling Douchey McDaterape. Turns out Seung Min and Seo Yeon live in the same neighborhood and team up for a project in their shared Architecture class since Seo Yeon is originally from Jeju.
Fast forward to current everyone. Seo Yeon wants Seung Min to rebuild her father's house on Jeju. The dad is sick, drama, drama, drama, Seung Min sucks as designing. So they decide to finished the father's failed add-ons and remodel what is already there.
Rewind again since 85% of this movie is about the development of the romance between the younger versions of Seung Min and Seo Yeon. Note, Seo Yeon is recently divorced but presents herself as married at first and so on. So, during their travels around their neighborhood and other neighborhood around them and on the bus line they take, the duo grow closer/ Seung Min's crush on Seo Yeon grows but he finds out the only reason she is in the class is to be near Douchey McDaterape. Who, we find out, gets chicks drunk at dance clubs and brings him back to his place to fuck while they are, in fact, incapacitated/unable to make a conscious decision hence the moniker.
So as the story goes on we find out that current Seung Min is, engaged to a co-worker and plans to leave the country after completing Seo Yeon's house. We also learn that Seung Min is bitter about his first love meaning shit doesn't go well for him in the 90s. I mean obviously. And if you wanna see how things turn out for our main leads during their time building her house, WATCH THE MOVIE!
This was actually a good movie and I can kind of understand why it's award winning however, I hated young Seung Min. I mean at first, I loved him nice guy with a crush who is trying desperately to navigate his crush without being a dick about it. However, towards the end, the part that lead to his and Seo Yeon's parting, NOOOOOPE. I am not gonna give too much away but he was watching the events in front of her house unfold, saw she was drunk, saw her turning her head. You could have prevented a rape and you didn't. And you blame her. Fuck you, dude.
Moving along, I loved seeing Han Ga In as the "sexy" lady. I've seen a lot of her early work. The geeky office girl is Super Rookie, the titular witch in Witch Yoo Hee but never have I seen her as the "sexy woman." She is a great actress and very pretty. Go, girl! Get those adult roles without them being those "adult" roles.
Holy fucking shit though, Bae Suzy. You know when idols act they are okay but you know they are only in shit because the producers, directors, whoever are trying to use their idol status to bring in viewership? Bae Suzy has talent. She is fantastic as the younger Seo Yeon and although I am not a Miss A fan, I am a fan of Bae Suzy.
Uhm Tae Woong, great as always. Playing the conflicted Seung Min reconnecting with his first love after all these years and the missed chances that come with it. blah blah blah. Lee Je Hoon, also great playing a boy in love for the first time and the anxiety and mood swings that come along with that. Been there so I know it well and he did a good job. All-in-all a good movie and totally worth the time it takes to watch it. It's a fair representation of first love and all that comes along with it. But fuck the Douchey McDaterape character. He should have never been in it and stabbed in the junk.

So remember how I was gonna watch It's Okay, It's Love, yeah back burnered. Got my parents addicted to Once Upon a Time and we marathoned that. Don'tjudgemeI'manadultwholivesathomeanddostuffwithmyparentsit'sfine. Nevertheless, I will force Ellen to watch it with me soon or else fuck her, I'mma watch it myself. Anyway, came across this movie on a "I have like an hour before I need to go to bed so why not stalk Lee Si Young's filmography because I miss her hilariousness whim." We all get them. So I decided I can totally watch a 116 minute movie in an hour. Hah no. Since that failed, I watched as much as I could then waited, impatiently, for Baby to nap the next day so I could finish. Well, here's what it's about and what I thought about it.
Her boss's latest project is for who knows what but staring forever up-and-coming actor Lee Seung-Jae (Oh Jung Se). They are shooting in like Busan or something, either way, after they wrap, Bo-Na falls asleep on the beach and wakes up to everyone gone. She calls for a ride but is scolded for falling asleep and blah blah blah. With no one coming for her she sets out to find a bus or hotel or something. Instead she finds a movie stand run by Dr. Suwalski (Park Young Gyu). He gives her his movie series "How to Use Guys With Secret Tips."
She takes it home and watches it. At first Bo-Na doesn't put much stock in it, mostly because it starts out campy. Well, I mean the whole thing is campy but like over-the-top, watch it and you'll see. However, as the movie progresses, Dr. Suwalski's lessons push Bo-Na to use her gender as a tool to get what she wants rather than letting it hold her back and allowing dude's to push her around not only on the job but in a romantic setting as well. A lot more shit happens but I don't wanna give too much away, you understand.
This movie was crazy awesome. And not just because Lee Si Young is awesome as Hell. If you know me, you know I got nothing but love for her. Anyway, the story itself, although somewhat ridiculous, was nothing but hilarious. Watching Bo-Na interact with Seung-Jae under the Dr.'s tips is great. There is a whole scene on blue balls. True story. And I am there like, "Dude there is a section on blue balls and how you can use that." Epic shit.
But no there is great progression within the characters, which a lot of movies fuck up. Bo-Na goes from mouse to cat without losing too much of who she is at the core and not turning into a huge bitch. Meanwhile Seung-Jae goes from super mighty assbag superstar to oh right I used to be that nobody actor who did a weird dance in front of a girl in hopes of getting hired. Yeah, there's a scene like that, it's so awesomely awkward. The story itself is great and it integrates "real life" and the tip movie realm well. Which is a trick a lot of these movies use. You know the guy from the self-help whatever is placed into the "real world" application dispensing his advice or going over the top being implemented even though he isn't really there. You know what I mean. Anyway, if you have a couple hours and need some "What the fuck is this movie?" laughs, this is a good bet. Also, why didn't the random Russian looking couple from the videos get credit? They were a vital part of the movie too! ^__-

So, I had some free time this week thanks to SPRIIIIING BREAK! And because of this I decided why not marathon the shit out of this drama? I had begun it previously but ADD and all that prevented me from getting passed the first five minutes. Er, well, okay closer to two minutes. But no once I got into it I was all about it.
Do Min Joon (Kim Soo Hyun) is an alien from another star who was stranded on Earth during the Joseon period (roughly late 1300s- late 1800s). 400 years later the asteroid he came on is coming back and he plans on spending his last three months on Earth in peace. That is until top star Chun Song Yi (Jun Ji Hyun) moves in next door.
Chun Song Yi, as all top stars in these things are, is a giant bitch and constantly getting into "scandals" for saying dumb shit. It happens whatever. So her agency moves her apartment again so she's living next door to Do Min Joon. We've established that he's an alien and as an alien has super rad super powers, telekinesis, stop time, levitation, crazy speed and so on. He also has incredible hearing which comes in handy throughout the series, but is what brings our main leads together. He's whining about her being rowdy in her apartment even though an actual person wouldn't be able to hear her. Needless to say, they initially get along. I know, major shock.
As per the usual, Song Yi has a major rival in fellow actress Han Yoo Ra (Yoo In Young). The get in cat fights, yadda yadda. I only mention this now because it comes up later. Now, Min Joon beings seeing flashes of sparkly shoes and someone going overboard on a boat. Who has these shoes he's seeing? Duh doy. So, like any normal person, he steals her shoes totally thinking he's gonna prevent these events. Yeah no, she gets another pair to wear to another actress who isn't important to the story's wedding where she runs into Yoo Ra. When Yoo Ra turns up dead from drowning, an apparent suicide, everyone assumes it's due to her rivalry with Song Yi and the media pounces on her and camps out in front of her apartment and events lead her to hiding out in Min Joon's apartment. Escalating attraction! Shit has hit the fan and everyone drops Song Yi, even her agency. This gives way to rising star and Song Yi's childhood friend Yoo Se Mi (Yoo In Na) who has been living in Song Yi's shadow for years as the secondary actress.
The fact that Song Yi is living with Min Joon, does not sit well with Song Yi's self proclaimed boyfriend Lee Hwi Kyung (Park Hae Jin). Se Mi's in love with him, putting it out there now and Song Yi's not all about it. So remember how I told you Min Joon wanted to prevent Song Yi from dying on the boat? Yeah well, he teleports himself onto the boat to save her even though she's in no real danger. Oh yeah, he teleports too. After putting her drunk ass into a room on the boat, because the wedding is on a boat, he over hears someone talking about "taking care" of Yoo Ra. This evil person is Lee Jae Kyung (Shin Sung Rok) who is not only Hwi Kyung's brother but a total sociopath who will kill anyone who gets in his way. Note, Song Yi also overhears Jae Kyung and Yoo Ra talking while on the boat before Yoo Ra's demise. This puts her life in danger since, as I said, dude's a total sociopath. So to sum up, basically this is drama is the story of a really old anti-social alien who doesn't age falls in love with fallen starlet who is being hunted by a sociopath because initially, she is the reincarnation of a girl whom he saved 400 years ago. That's it... basically.
I forgot how much fun super marathoning a drama was. I think now that I am working waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more it's fun to get time off and just do stuff like this. Makes me appreciate it more. yay! Yeah, I really liked this drama. It was cute and suspenseful and really kept you wanting more. I think it was supposed to be sad in some parts but I don't get sad like an average person so, you know, that. But no, okay, the drama itself starts a little slow and I did stop caring about the flashbacks to the Joseon era at some points. I honestly could have done without the whole him being the inspiration to Hong Gil Dong but there it is. The story about him and the girl he saved fine. Everything else meh.
I very much loved the relationship between Song Yi and Min Joon. It was very cute and what not. I mean the chemistry wasn't "Oh my goddess Park Bom you are now my OTP" but it worked for the story and for me. Another thing I liked was how in one episode they show you something but then the next episode at some point show you all of it when it works better in the story, you know? They do that in a lot of dramas but this one, to me, worked better with the story telling. I dunno don't ask. I loved the way the story unfolded, is basically what I am trying to say.
Anyway, I think if I had to rank my favorite Korean actresses Jun Ji Hyun would be my solid third behind #1 Kim Ha Neul and #2 Lee Si Young. She's very versatile in her acting and I appreciate it. Dramatic roles, boom nails it. Funny rolls holy freaking balls yes! Have you guys seen My Sassy Girl? If not, you need to, like, now... I can wait...
