Water sustains all life and entire ecosystems depend on it for their survival.

Water Quality Month reminds us to take a long, hard look at what your household and community are doing to protect sources of fresh water.

The History of Water Quality Month

The United Nations has declared 2005-2015 an International Decade for Action 1CWater for Life 1D in order to emphasize the importance of water quality as it relates to sanitation, human rights, geography, urbanization and sustainability. What can individuals and families can do to prevent water pollution from their homes especially during Water Quality Month? Here 19s a short list of things that you can do at home to help:

Not using antibacterial soaps or cleaning products. Regular soap and water will do the trick. Much of the antibacterial soaps contain a registered pesticide that is known to harm marine life.

Not flushing unwanted or out-of-date medications down the toilet or drain.

Not putting anything but water down storm drains because they carry water to local waterways.

Fixing leaks that drop from cars and putting liners in driveways to collect oil and other materials.

Avoid using pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

Choose nontoxic household products when possible.

Pick up after pets.

Not paving properties.

If you have a private well make sure it is tested and cleaned regularly. There can be bacteria build up in wells.

Read your local water quality report so you know what the water quality is in your area.

Another option could be to gather a group of family, friends, and neighbors and volunteer to clean a local water source. You could bring a picnic (and some beer for the adults) and hold a contest to see who can clean up the most trash and debris, offering a prize to the winning team.

Celebration Sarcoma Awareness Month July 2021

Every year thousands of people are diagnosed with sarcomas, a type of cancer that forms in the connective tissues of the body including fat, blood vessels, nerves, etc. Sarcomas are a rare form of cancer, but no less deadly for their rarity. Research continues on what causes sarcoma and why certain people develop it, and Sarcoma Awareness Month was created to help raise awareness of this disease and all the people it effects.

History of Sarcoma Awareness Month

In November of 2007, a group of advocates came together in Seattle to gather all the sarcoma non-profits under single united effort. Together they determined that the world was in need of a month dedicated to sarcoma awareness. This move was supported by sarctrials.org, a collection of sarcoma doctors who were determined to see sarcomas wiped out once and for all, and so Sarcoma Awareness Month was born.

As part of this effort, a petition was sent to the White House with the intent of gathering 100,000 signatures to officially declare July as Sarcoma Awareness Month. Sarcoma cases increase by 15,000 a year, and while that 19s relatively small compared to some forms of cancer, this form is particularly insidious and lethal. Cancer fighters need the support of organizations and events like this to handle the difficulties of a cancer diagnosis, including facing their mortality and care for their family that often arise thanks to the medications they 19re on to fight it.

How To Celebrate Sarcoma Awareness Month

Celebrating Sarcoma Awareness Month starts with education. With these forms of cancers being so rare most people don 19t know a lot about them, so spend some time researching sarcomas in all their forms. Then move on to studying how one would recognize the symptoms of a sarcoma so you 19ll know to check with a doctor if any of these signs pop up.

From that point forward it 19s time to start looking to help those in your community who are already facing this disease by connecting with non-profits in your area. Working with these organizations will help spread information, raise awareness, and generate funds for research and other related charities. When the cold weather is in abundance, what better way to sit down and warm up than with a nice, warm bowl of soup? Where did soup come from, and how was it created? Let 19s find out as we dive into the history of Soup Month!

The soul warming history of Soup Month

Historical evidence of the existence of soup dates all the way back to about 20,000 B.C. Boiling was not a common cooking technique until the invention of a waterproofed container, which started out as clay vessels. Animal Hides and watertight baskets were used along with heated rocks. The word soup itself derives from the French word soupe which means soup or broth. The word restaurant was first used in France, around the 16th century, to refer to a highly concentrated, inexpensive soup, sold by street vendors, that was advertised as an antidote to physical exhaustion.

In 1765, a Parisian entrepreneur opened a shop specializing in such soups. This prompted the use of the modern word restaurant for the eating establishments. In the US, the first colonial cookbook was published by William Parks in Williamsburg, Virginia, in 1742, based on Eliza Smith 19s The Compleat Housewife; or Accomplished Gentlewoman 19s Companion, and it included several recipes for soups and bisques.

A 1772 cookbook titled The Frugal Housewife, had an entire chapter around the entire subject of soups. In 1897, Doctor John T. Dorrance, a chemist with the Campbell Soup Company invented condensed soup, which has grown exponentially in popularity in the modern era. Condensing soup allows soup to be packaged into a smaller can and sold at a lower price than other canned soups. The soup is usually doubled in volume by adding a 1Ccan full 1D of water or milk (about 10 ounces).

Since the 1990s, the canned soup market has burgeoned with soups marketed as 1Cready-to-eat, 1D which require no additional liquid to prepare. Microwaveable bowls have expanded the ready-to-eat canned soup market even more, offering convenience (especially in workplaces) and are popular lunch items.

Directions

Place the onion, chili beans, black beans, corn, tomato sauce, beer, and diced tomatoes in a slow cooker. Add taco seasoning, and stir to blend. Lay chicken breasts on top of the mixture, pressing down slightly until just covered by the other ingredients. Set slow cooker for low heat, cover, and cook for 5 hours.

Remove chicken breasts from the soup, and allow to cool long enough to be handled. Stir the shredded chicken back into the soup, and continue cooking for 2 hours. Serve topped with shredded Cheddar cheese, a dollop of sour cream, and crushed tortilla chips, if desired.
