Studio Update

First, just want to say that Stitched Tribeca will be back.

But we've had to completely clear out of our space so repairs & renovations can be done. Four floors need to be gutted - including the storefront - before rebuilding can begin.

This could take a few more months. Sigh. Please keep positive energy flowing our way. We hope to see you again sooner than later!

One more afternoon to Knit-Along

Hi everyone!

Just a reminder that we'll have one more afternoon to knit-along this Saturday, April 12 from noon to 3pm at the World Trade Art Gallery (74 Trinity Place).

This weekend will be the knit-along only. But we'd like to thank everyone who came out last Saturday to knit, make a friendship bracelet, shop a little and to give us some moral support.

Yes, it's been rough not knowing when we'll be able to return to the Stitched Tribeca space. But we really appreciate the e-mails, kind words and well-wishes from everyone who has reached out to us. Thank you!

Saturday, April 5 from noon-3pm at World Trade Art Gallery

We might not have access to our shop right now, but that doesn't mean we have to stop what we're really all about!

Please join us this Saturday, April 5th, from noon to 3pm at The World Trade Art Gallery located at 74 Trinity Place.

LEARN - The Knit-Along is still on! Bring your knitting needles & your yarn. If you can cast on, knit, purl & bind off, then you are all set to learn how to knit the Chinese Wave, Indian Corn and Linen stitches with Edita. You choose what your project ultimately becomes - cowl, infinity scarf or perhaps, eventually, a little throw blanket.

MAKE - Maybe knitting isn't your thing. In that case, maybe you like to knot up a quick friendship bracelet with Val? SHOP - Yes shop. Please do. We have air plants, washi tape, duck tape, knitting needles, quite a bit of yarn (the clean stuff that was safely wrapped in plastic) and all sorts of other fun kits. If we don't sell this stuff during this 3 hour window, then Val has to live with it 'til we can move back into our shop!

CONNECT - We've missed our community. Thank you so much to everyone for your support and encouragement. It's been a little rough, but knowing you're cheering us on makes a huge difference. We would love to see you on the 5th.

Studio Update - Stitched Tribeca Closed for Repairs

We are so sad to announce that Stitched Tribeca will remain closed for repairs.

It is our understanding that the water damage, resulting from the fire upstairs from us Saturday night, is significant enough to call for replacement of walls and ceiling. At this time, we do not know what the time line for repairs and reopening will be.

All current and upcoming April classes have been cancelled. If you are currently registered for a class or camp, you should have already received an e-mail from us.

Thank you to everyone for your support. The past few days have been really tough. Your e-mails, well wishes and kind words mean a lot.

Please do continue to check back on this blog or on our facebook page for updates on the studio.

Closed to Clean Up

We are so sorry to announce we have to cancel all classes & temporarily close our doors the week of March 24 - March 29.

A fire a few floors up resulted in lots of water damage in our studio earlier this evening. As sad as we are over how trashed our space is, we were relieved to hear no one was hurt.

We'll be posting updates as soon as we figure out the extent of damage to our space & how long it will take to get everything fixed.

Yarn Doctor!

Struggling with a knitting or crochet project? Need a little help to get back on track? Well, not to worry. Help will be available this Friday (3/21) during our "Chat & Craft" from noon-1:30.

Meet Edita. She'll be teaching our beginner knitting class next week. She'll also be leading our knit-along in April. We think she's amazing with both knitting needles & crochet hooks. And now, she'll be popping into some of our Friday "Chat & Crafts" to help folks out of their knitting and crocheting dilemmas.

So please do drop by this Friday. Bring your own small projects (knitting, crochet, embroidery, needlepoint). Take a break from your busy day. Make a little. Socialize a lot. And for the yarn-folk in our community, the "Yarn Doctor" will be in this week!

"We Sell Stuff"

We were hand stitching and chatting with the kids in the studio one day. The topic of retail in studio came up. When I mentioned that many people weren't aware that we had things to sell, one child's suggested solution was for us to put a sign in our window that said "We Sell Stuff."

My first reaction was to laugh as I pictured a big cardboard sign taped to the window with these words scrawled across it in crayon.

And then I thought, "Well, why not?"

I pulled out some of my children's old wooden blocks, some stickers and the mod podge to create our sign. These little blocks are now lined up in the window announcing to the passerby that we do indeed "sell stuff."

Yarn Happenings at Stitched Tribeca

Bringing yarn into Stitched Tribeca has added a whole new dimension to our making community. Very exciting stuff! Here's a list of what's going on yarn-wise this next month:

Beginner Knitting Class with Edita Ostrova on Mondays 3/24 and 3/31 from noon - 2pm. Registration online.

Knit-Along with Edita Ostrova on Saturdays 4/5 and 4/12 from noon-3pm. Choose to knit a scarf, cowl or coverlet while learning three very impressive looking stitches. All you need to do to participate is to buy a skein of our Cascade Ecological wool. We'll sign you up for the knit-along at time of purchase.

Yarn Doctor with Edita Ostrova after the knit-along. What does that mean? That means bring in that knitting or crochet project you goofed up and get some help with it!

Beginner Crochet Class with Val Chan. Four Tuesday evenings from 6-8pm beginning April 8. Registration online.

And, as always, our Friday "Chat & Craft" sessions. Noon-1:30 every Friday. It's our weekly social event. All you have to do is bring your knitting, crochet, needlepoint or embroidery, pull up a chair, catch up with old friends, meet some new friends & of course, get making!

The Altered Page at Stitched Tribeca

I was describing the concept of Stitched Tribeca to a customer the other day. In addition to classes and supplies, I told her about the different makers showing and selling some of their work through the studio.

Steven, of Abyu Lighting, who makes massive, intricate light fixtures mostly with feathers... but sometimes out of old detergent bottles. Amy, architect and creator of Agrisculpture. Bill and Dave, their vast collection of vinyl and the melted bowls they make from them.

"It's like a little village in here," she said.

"That's exactly right," I replied.

I love the sound of that. Stitched Tribeca is turning into a true community of folks connecting over something so simple as creating with our hands, hearts and imaginations.

And now I'm thrilled to welcome Seth Apter, of The Altered Page, to our "little village."

I met Seth at the Bust Craftacular this past holiday season. I'd stumbled across the craft show while doing some last minute Christmas shopping and wandered in out of curiosity.

Amidst a giant room filled with vendors, Seth's table screamed out at me to step in closer. To take a careful look. To see the story in each canvas. To inquire about the choice of found objects affixed to each piece.

Do you ever find it intimidating to strike up conversation with an artist? I do. But I'm glad I scraped up the courage to approach Seth that day. Because I admire his work. I'm intrigued with his story. And he's a really nice guy too!

So stop into the studio if you want to take a closer look at his work for yourself. I can tell you the part of his story I know. Or, if you want to meet him and see his latest works, you can find him at the Art Exp NY at Pier 94 from April 4-6.

Closed for Mid-Winter Holiday

Sewing 101

Our first round of the Adult Sewing 101 class is wrapping up.

Some of the students had to work through fear of serger. Others gritted their teeth as they installed their first zipper. Nonetheless, we've had a terrific time. Everyone has persevered. And every student will walk out of the class with 4 bags and a new set of sewing skills. Kudos to all our students!

For anyone interested in taking Sewing 101, the next round begins the second week of March. Registration through our website.

Agrisculpture at Stitched Tribeca

We have something incredibly cool and unique to share with you at Stitched Tribeca: Agrisculpture by Amy Lewis.

Farm equipment rethought and remade into beautiful items for your home.

The shape of each piece is so clean and simple. But the process behind the product is far from simple. We'll tell you all about it when you stop in to examine these gorgeous pieces for yourself.

Penguin Yarn Swatch

If you haven't seen already, come on by Stitched Tribeca to check out our selection of Cascade Yarns.

The yarn we've had the most questions about is this pretty Baby Alpaca Chunky "Penguin" skein. Folks want to know what it looks knitted up - so here it is!

We used size 8 needles. Cast on 24 stitches. Used a basketweave stitch (4 knit, 4 purl, switching every six rows). One skein of the baby alpaca yielded about 28 inches of "swatch." If you wanted to make a scarf out of this, you'd need 2-3 skeins total (depending on how long you wanted your scarf).

It's gorgeous, huh? And, since it's baby alpaca, you know it's a complete dream to work with.

Now it's off to knit up swatches for the Cascade 220 and the fabulous Eco Duo yarns!
