Stockton's 2011-12 Season Blog

Audiences will be amazed and delighted by the changes at the Stockton Performing Arts Center this season. As the Stockton Performing Arts Center staff was working hard to present our best season yet, the college was also preparing the theatre to better accommodate our patrons. There will be a new wine bar for patrons to enjoy. The Stockton Art Gallery which will be located just off the lobby will also be open.

The college will also debut the new theatre located in the brand new Campus Center. This 250-seat auditorium will be the home of the new “Sundays at the Center” series, featuring such wonderful and diverse acts as: Leon Redbone, “Sing-a long-a Sound of Music,” “Some Enchanted Evening” with Michel Bell, and Four Bitchin’ Babes. The Monday Night Jazz Series featuring such local artists as Eddie Morgan & REK'D 4 JAZZ and The Brubeck Project will make its home there as well.

The main stage has something for everyone – Ed Asner as FDR, Atlantic City Ballet’s “Dracula,” The Shangri-La Chinese Acrobats, “The Queen of Bingo,” Philadanco and The Moscow Festival Ballet’s “Cinderella.”

A Review of Herman's Hermits - August 8th, 2011

I thought I'd seen the Music Pier packed before, but there didn't seem to be an empty seat anywhere last Monday as the audience hailed Peter Noone's lively and humorous performance. Under a huge British-flag banner proclaiming the band's name, Herman's Hermits starring Peter Noone, an enthusiastic group of musicians did more than just pay homage to the group's top hits -- they cranked up the volume and played their hearts out in classic British Invasion style. I enjoyed the upbeat "Wonderful World," "Dandy" and "A Must to Avoid," but the song that stuck in my mind is "No Milk Today." Why this song isn't as well-known as "Can't You Hear My Heartbeat" is a total mystery to me! I'd have to call it my favorite by far, even better than the sweetly wistful "Mrs. Brown You've Got a Lovely Daughter," which I adore. In the front rows, Peter's "Nooniacs" -- die-hard fans of the Hermits and its lead singer in particular -- waved British flags, sang along and cheered loudly. At least two music enthusiasts had brought album covers for their idol to sign, but seeing his younger face printed life-size evidently gave Noone an idea for a sight gag. He took the album covers, held one on either side of his head, and proceeded to sing while strutting up and down the stage portraying his teenage self. As he told his listeners, many of whom were laughing uncontrollably, "When I get up here, I'm 17 again." No matter that he's 62 according to the calendar! Poking fun at his not-quite-svelte physique, he lamented that his 'backside' keeps creeping up his back as the years go on, saying that soon he'll be reaching over his shoulder to get to his wallet. Of course the Nooniacs (and everyone else) roared with laughter to see him clown around on stage. No Herman's Hermits concert would be complete without a rousing rendition of "I'm Henry the 8th I Am," during which Noone exhorted the crowd to yell "so loud the folks in Margate can hear you!" We yelled "H-E-N-R-Y" with gusto, clapping to the beat, and left the show with grins on our faces. Good show, Herman! Come back any time! (And thanks for the CD!)

Our Guest Blogger Previews Herman's Hermits

When Herman’s Hermits appear in Ocean City tonight, I imagine there’ll be a “kind of hush” just before it hits the audience that they’re “into something good.” And singing along to the music will make a good thing “just a little bit better.”

There’s so much to like about Herman’s Hermits, and I keep discovering new things about the group that only add to their charm. Did you know that lead singer Peter Noone was only 15 when he became the band’s frontman? In a July 1965 interview with 16 Magazine, when asked what he planned to do with his money, he replied, “Own a chain of launderettes across the country. For some reason, I find them fascinating.” This sort of silly, yet down-to-earth boyishness earned Peter “Herman” Noone a fanbase that propelled the group’s popularity past the Beatles in terms of performance revenue that year. But it was the music that left an indelible mark on the pop charts… and decades later, we’re still enjoying hits like “Can’t You Hear My Heartbeat” and “Mrs. Brown, You’ve Got a Lovely Daughter.”

I’m pretty sure this will be a sold-out show at the Ocean City Music Pier (8 p.m., Moorlyn Terrace and the boardwalk) so grab your ticket before they’re gone and I’ll see you there!

Stockton's Guest Blogger reviews The Family Stone

If I had to choose one word to describe the energy of last Monday's performance by The Family Stone Experience, it would probably be 'frenetic.' I was fully prepped to have fun, getting into the mood ahead of time with a funky '70s-inspired outfit, and claiming a front-row seat at the last minute that evidently no one else was going to take. It was a warm night, but it was about to get a lot hotter -- little did I know The Family Stone intended to have us dancing for nearly the entire show! Starting out with "Are You Ready" and moving on with barely a pause to songs including “Hot Fun In The Summertime,” “Family Affair,” “Dance to the Music” and “Thank You Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin,” the performers rocked the stage and urged the audience to clap to the beat. With "Stand!" those who were able and willing responded by surging to their feet, hands waving in the air. I was looking forward to a repeat of that fabled Woodstock moment when Sly Stone issued a call to his listeners (and got a thunderous reply) during “I Want to Take You Higher” ... and it was Woodstock all over again as we shouted out "Higher!" every time the singer raised his hand to the sky. With original band members Jerry Martini, Cynthia Robinson and Greg Errico doing what they love best, it was hard to pick a favorite moment, but the lyrics of “Everyday People” rang as true for 2011 as they ever did in 1969, when a racially mixed band featuring talented male and female musicians was a novelty: 'I am no better, and neither are you; We are the same, whatever we do.' A standing ovation at the end of the night had no time to die out before the singers and dancers got right back to their places for a rousing conclusion to an exuberant performance. Maybe there were some in the audience who got to hear the original band members in their early years (and maybe they had so much fun they can't remember it), but last Monday on the Ocean City boardwalk, I got my own taste of the Summer of Love. I hope you did too.

Stockton's Guest Blogger reviews The Classics IV and previews The Family Stone

“Stormy” was on the set list for Monday night’s show by The Classics IV, but the weather was balmy and beautiful on the Ocean City Boardwalk. A perfect night for music! Jerry Beebe’s intro was met with a hearty round of applause from the audience, obviously familiar with the host of WIBG-FM’s morning show. It wasn’t long before Tommy Garrett (looking dapper in black suit, white shirt and red tie) swung out on stage to lead an up-tempo medley that got people smiling, heads nodding and toes tapping.

Garrett confided after the show that he never pre-arranges jokes or banter for performances, because he wants to preserve the spontaneity and uniqueness of each venue. He paused between songs to chat with the audience, talking about The Classics IV’s roots, poking playful fun at the band’s somewhat lesser-known status despite having 16 Billboard hits, and even leaving the stage entirely to shake hands with fans while singing “Pollyanna.” At least one couple drove all the way from Massachusetts just to attend the show! I soon gave up trying to measure the crowd’s enjoyment because I was having too much fun humming along to “Pity the Fool,” “What Am I Crying For,” “Cherry Hill Park” and covers of “Unchain My Heart,” “It’s Not Unusual,” “Don’t You Care” and “Tender Years.”

There were some poignant moments in the show, such as the sweet “Traces” which Garrett always dedicates to the memory of former lead singer Dennis Yost, and a heartfelt “God Bless the USA” with an extra verse written by Garrett to honor fallen American soldiers. But there was plenty of humor throughout, and even a few surprises. I didn’t expect to hear two new songs by The Classics IV, but “Teenage Lover” and “A New Horizon” fit snugly into the band’s repertoire as though they’d always been there. The harmony on “A New Horizon” was almost as much of a thrill to hear as the saxophone (and flute!) solos provided by Paul Weddle (standing in for Garard Montague) -- who got so much applause, Garrett hinted darkly he might not get paid. All in good fun! The new tunes should be available on Amazon.com as MP3s soon, so you can hear for yourself.

Well, I could go on, but there’s so much to look forward to this Monday night as well, with The Family Stone Experience arriving at 8 p.m. July 18 at (you guessed it) the Music Pier in Ocean City! I don’t know if I’m fully prepared for the raw power of ’70s soul and funk performed live by Jerry Martini and Cynthia Robinson, but if there was ever a reason to pile on the fringe, wear some platform shoes and “Dance to the Music,” this would have to be it. We are happy to have a special guest blogger this Summer who will be previewing/reviewing our 2011 Stockton Goes to the Beach Summer Series concerts. Without further ado, here is Rebekah Z.'s first contribution, a nice preview of tonight's performance by The Classics IV...

A long day at the office. I can feel the week's worries tangled in every neck and shoulder muscle as I drive home. Time to push that radio button and set loose my favorite beats - not the top-40 pop hits or the manic dance techno that blares from others' windows, though. I'm thinking of a smooth, sweet tune that takes me back to summer vacations of years past... and like magic, I'm singing along to "Stormy" by The Classics IV. How did they know?

Ah, music and summer, you were made for each other. As I drive, my frustrated scowl melts into a secretive smile. I just remembered that it's July 1, and Stockton Goes to the Beach Concerts are just days away.

Better and better: The Classics IV kicks off the first concert at the Ocean City Music Pier at 8 p.m. Monday, July 11. I know where I'm going to be that night. Now the only question is what to wear...

There’s nothing like going to a show at the Ocean City Music Pier!

 Although it may seem far away, the summer is coming closer every day. At Stockton Performing Arts Center, we are already working out the final details of our summer concert series, and it has us looking forward to those magical days at OCMP (as we affectionately refer to the Ocean City Music Pier). The summer is a time for everyone to have fun, and the shows at the OCMP embody that spirit, encouraging our attendees to surrender to the magic of summer and the Ocean City Music Pier.

The OCMP overlooks the ocean. Located on the boardwalk, it’s one of the most wonderful places to perform. You are surrounded by the smell of the salty sea air, the sound of the waves crashing against the beach and jetties, the dazzling lights and joyful clamor of children on the boardwalk rides. The boardwalk atmosphere is spellbinding.  

Once you’re inside, the real wonder begins. You enter feeling excited and full of anticipation. The lights come up, the band begins to play and miraculously you are transported to a happy time. You find yourself smiling, laughing, clapping, dancing and singing along to a favorite song.  The songs make you think of your girlfriend or boyfriend from high school or you go back to the day you got engaged or married. You’re back in that moment once again.  

Sometimes you bring your children to enjoy and experience the music you love. Year after year, I have seen countless baby boomer fathers taking their teenage sons to see Blue Oyster Cult, Dickie Betts, Dokken or Winger. No matter what the show, audiences always leave feeling joyful, fulfilled and young once again. Or as I like to think, young as their hearts truly are.

Have fun this summer and experience the magic with us at Ocean City Music Pier! You’ll be glad you did.
