You know what the hardest part of making a new rpg system is?

Mechanics. I can think about worldbuilding shit all day but when you get to the numbers part of the game it gets a lot harder.

What do I want the level cap to be? Do I even want to use a level system or come up with something new? If so, how does that work? What about spells for caster classes? Do those have levels? How do I determine what levels players get them at if I haven’t decided on a level cap or if I’m even using levels???

1st concern: you shouldn’t worry about how high your level cap should be but rather worry about how it should be handled

2nd concern: creativity is everything! The more unique, the better!

3rd concern: There’s not really a problem in adding generic spells into your rpg, heck most rpg games have been doing that for what? Ages?

4th concern: as mentioned in 1st concern

It’s not an old post it was made less than 24 hours ago. Since then I’ve decided to try a system without levels in which experience is used as currency to buy abilities and stat increases. To prevent players from trying to hoard points to buy the most powerful abilities asap I’m using prerequisites and ability levels, so they have to work their way up to the big stuff. Classes will have certain abilities unique to them, then there will also be basic abilities that anyone can get, like riding, lock picking, crafting, etc.

I’ve also decided that unlike D&D where you have your ability score and then a modifier based on it, they’re the same number. So instead of “I have 14 dex so my modifier is +2″ you’d just have 2 dex that gets added onto things. Gonna experiment with capping that naturally at 10 which is double what 5e allows but it would also be obscenely expensive to get that high so that would be very “We’re gods now” late game. They’ll also be capped lower at character creation to discourage trying to maximize ability scores without buying any skills. Otherwise everyone would like, maximize strength and play a grizzly bear or something with powerful natural attacks.

I try not to worry too much about powergamers though, I’m not making the game for them.

Speaking of tutorial, when making a tutorial you gotta balance 2 important elements; Fun and Informative. e.g. Facing a great war as a concept of tutorial, see Aura Kingdom for reference.

As for abilities, its fine I guess, but PvP terms, you might want to start thinking of future plans and assumptions whether you think certain abilities should be buffed or nerfed.

I may not know much about game dev but I am a tech student looking forward to be one, and also i play a ton of rpgs.

Do you know what I really hate? Everyone knows that carnivorous plants exist, but they only know of the ONE kind.

Or the fastest moving plant in the world! The bladderwort sucks its prey in so fast you gotta slow down the footage/capture it with a high-speed camera!! It practically looks like the prey teleports into the goddamn chambers!!

And look how freaky and alien it looks from the surface!!

And then there are the pitchers!! There’s SO MANY different kinds!!

And then there’s the expert hunter, the Cobra lily - a species that Darwin couldn’t wrap his head around. He couldn’t understand how natural evolution could make something so “perfect”!!

And then of course you’ve got your nepenthes.

The biggest of which can eat small mammals like mice!! It’s even had RATS fall into it!! (I will note though that it prefers insects, but is just able to eat larger prey bc of its size)

I could go on (I mean didn’t even talk about HOW these plants catch their prey!) But I think you get the idea.

Carnivorous plants are cool ok. Share the spotlight a lil bit.
