this is simply not true?? i will agree with you that MOST if not almost all stridercest shippers are very good at drawing the lines between what's ok in fiction versus reality, but i have met many -- and been one -- who are not
the thing is that a lot of the time, people forget about the inherently imbalanced power dynamics that come from parent-child incest; parent-child incest stems from an imbalance of power even when both parties are of age
here's the thing: there are people who don't recognize this. they tend to be the same people who mix up non-con and healthy BDSM fic (and don't tell me you've never run into this bc it's such a widespread phenomenon it would SHOCK me if you hadn't)
you cannot automatically assume that everybody understands the nuances of consent as it applies to real life situations versus fiction
and if you want to kink on imbalanced power dynamics or unhealthy relationships or whatever that's fine! it's definitely not my job to tell people what they can and can't kink on, especially considering my own kinks are dubious, and considering many victims of unhealthy incestuous relationships use incestfic as a coping mechanism
but it comes with a responsibility to note that these scenarios are kinky fantasies that would never play out this way or be healthy in real life, because otherwise you're passively participating in the perpetuation of the insidious rape culture that is so ingrained into our society

most of my lack of understanding of power dynamics came when i was underage
mod m and i were both underage (sixteen) when we created this blog, and we are both adults now. adulthood came with a certain shift in perspective. when you're enjoying incest fic as an underage person, it tends to be about the attraction of older people, the hot factor, etc. i can safely say that's what it was about for both of us. idle fantasies about being the younger party
adulthood changed my perspective because it made me very very conscious of the age differences between me and the people i know IRL, not to mention conscious of age differences between people in fiction. when i was underage, i had no concept of the power dynamics at play in these kinds of relationships, and wrote some kind of gross fic myself that i really did believe was fluffy and cute
and i find that most people who don't understand these dynamics aren't adult predators -- they are minors usually between the ages of thirteen and sixteen, and if that's not motivation to bring up these things then i don't know what is
this isn't about chastising predators or kink shaming, this is about acknowledging unhealthy relationships because the majority of the audience who don't draw the lines between reality and fiction are the most vulnerable
i don't believe these things need to be discussed because adults need to feel bad about themselves because of their kinks. i believe they need to be discussed so that minors can understand consent and not be open to emotional manipulation from people they know in real life
so i've been stewing on this for a while but only now decided that i really wanted to make an Actual Serious Post on this blog. it's been a while, so some of you might not remember this blog; it's a satirical & vaguely troll-esque blog that i, along with mod q, started quite literally over two years ago.
the blog's been dead for a while now, and just to make a note, i haven't come back to start some kind of shitstorm; i've moved blogs about a half-dozen (or more) times since this blog was created, and have consistently forgotten to ask mod q to re-invite me. whoops.

stridercest is, without a doubt, fucked up. bro is canonically abusive to dave, dirk is manipulative and coercive as all get out, not to mention that it's implied that he had brobot sexually assault jake. please don't pretend like these things just. don't exist.
i am not saying that you can't or shouldn't ship stridercest, but please acknowledge these things and especially how bro's and dirk's interactions would play out in a real-world context.
i mean, honestly, i still ship it. it's one of my favorite ships from the hs fandom (particularly when it's dirk/dave or alpha!dave/dirk because i like the dynamics better than bro/dave), aside from a few other select ships that i really adore.
but i'll also be the first one to admit that it's not a healthy ship in basically any form if you're going by canon characterization and relationships, and that it can be triggering as all get out to people who are abuse survivors & victims, even more particularly to those who might've been abused (whether sexually or not) by familial relations.
so, a few more notes.
if you are going to write stridercest fanfiction with their relationship romanticized in any way, please make a particular note that this is not the way things work in the real world. i had a grasp on this even when i started shipping the pairing (again, in any form), but it wasn't until recently it's hit me even harder than it had already just how fucked up the dynamics in this pairing are. by which i mean, when i was younger, i didn't realize the potential irl ramifications of fan-made content of this pairing. i didn't stop to think that it could be triggering or upsetting or distressing in any way; i just liked the art and thought the fics were hot and that was about it. (AND ALWAYS TAG WITH A WARNING FOR IF IT'S UNDERAGE.)
if you are going to make fanart of them, again, tag it. please. especially, especially, especially if it involves either of the characters being underage.
and as one last thought, before i chicken out and don't say it, i am not trying to kink-shame anyone here. and especially if it's some kind of coping device.
i literally have a kink for unhealthy/abusive relationships with really fucked up power dynamics, so it's not like i can judge you for that whatsoever.
but it's not something i really talk about because i know that it's something that, again, can be triggering. and the last damn thing that i want to do is trigger someone, particularly any friends who have gone through any kind of similar abuse.
that's not to say that you shouldn't write anything involving stridercest, but please, whether it's outright kink fic or romantic fluffy shit, please make it clear that this shit isn't cool or healthy in any context other than fictional.
