Bon Voyage...

Well today was a very much awaited day for me. I will say that, despite the difficulty of trudging through two of our books, i did enjoy the class. I feel like because of getting to understand some of the aspects and good things that come with PoMo, i may be less resistant to it in the future. I feel that the little bit of understanding that i have gained may have better equipped me to actually enjoy it instead of avoiding it like the plague. As for the class itself, it was very fun chatting and discussing with you all and i very much hope to see you all again.

Well, I cannot say that I preferred one over the other, to tell you the truth. The book was a bit of a daunting task, especially since I had seen the movie a few years before. This is one of those times [and these occurrences are one in a million for me] that I prefer to just watch the movie...

For once it was a daunting task for you and not for me. Hmmmm...

Either way, i think it was a nice change to what we have experienced all term. I am personally a fan of the whole post apocalyptic thing. I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but i ask you: What if it happens while we are alive? If you survive whatever cataclysmic event that occurs, you will be glad for movies/books like that.

Anyway, i digress. As far as not wanting to be in the situation, OF COURSE we wouldn't want that, but ask yourself why we as a culture watch and follow things like jersey shore or pop culture staples of that nature? Not because we want to know what its like, but to appreciate that we don't have to live in their shoes...

The Road on film.

Everything i expected, and even better! For the most part, the movie is exactly how I pictured. The only thing that wasn’t quite right to me is that I did see the boy being a bit younger. Other than that I loved it and wouldn’t mind seeing it again in the future. My two favorite things about the movie are these…

First, I was VERY glad that the music wasn’t all grim and bleak, but in many scenes, it was quite light and hopeful. It was almost sentimental in a way.

Secondly, I enjoyed seeing the scenes and hearing my soundtrack in my head. It really brought the imagination part to life. I think some of my tunes would have even been better than the music they had for a few particular scenes. But hey I don’t get paid the Hollywood big bucks, do I?

End of The Road

I can honestly say that i thoroughly enjoyed this book! I already love the post-apocalyptic genre, and the fact that there was a real heartfelt story in the midst really pleased me. it also kept me interested. i didn't have nearly the difficulty finishing this work as i did the others. I very much enjoyed the gradual maturing of the boy, and the man's acceptance of his impending fate. Their conversation at the end truly shows how close they are, and it brings to light that the boy is ready for it to happen (the man's death). He may not want it to happen, much like the situation he was born into, but he has come to grips with what is inevitable. And even in his first act as n orphan was very methodical, much like his father. All in all, two big thumbs up!

FINALLY!!!

Ok so The Road. I am really liking this book so far. i love the post apocalyptic feel, love the simplicity of the story, but i also love that it is extremely poetic as well. Not to mention that the characters are vastly different. For one, the road itself is a character. If it was not in the story, things would be drastically different. Its almost like the road is the scarred remnants of a world that no longer exists. I am also VERY much looking forward to the possible character development that is possible, especially without all the distractions of changing pov...

More Goon Squad...

Ok i get that the whole concept of the book is the changes in time. But what the hel is up with chapter 12? i thought by the name of the chapter it would be as straightforward as the rest of the book (ha), but why ist the whole thing in powerpoint form? yes there was disscussion of graphs but did the whole chapter have to be like that?

Goon Squad...

Ok so reading this new book, Goon Squad, I am really not sure what i think of it. The first few chapters each seem like the 1st chapter from a different book. I'm very confused as to the progression of events. it skips around and the only thing it has in common is that the characters are the same... is anyone else as lost as i am?

i can honestly say i am enjoying this one so far. it isnt the easiest to follow but i am working on that. i very much enjoy the EXTREMELY detailed accounts of the war. at first the narrator is all-knowing, then becomes a person in the story. it's almost as if the point of view is changing, but at the same time it isnt. it certainly puts the events that they went through into perspective for me...

I find it absolutely hysterical that I am not the only one who is just gaga over this book. Albeit it was a good book, had a heartfelt story, and FINALLY started to make sense, but the only things that set it apart are the changes in POV, the jumping around in timeline, and the A.D.D. rants. If one were to take all of those elements out of the story, it would most likely cease to be po-mo. Again, I am not saying it isn’t a good book, because if it sucked I still wouldn’t have been able to get half way. The story is quite imaginative, and well expressed, but I don’t see why it is so renowned. In the words of one of my favorite sports commentators, “Just my opinion, oughta be yours.”

Alright, by now, I'm fairly sure that everyone knows that I am not nuts about this book. I'm still waiting for the "birdseed shirt" to make sense. And honestly I have enough ADD tangents of my own that I don't feel the urgent need to read the tangents of a child. That being said, I am thankful that there is now some semblance of a story that I can follow. I was quite frustrated with the mash-up that was the first chapter, and the emergence of continuity makes me a bit more open to the book itself. All I can say is that I think the movie will be a bit more tolerable, because there is only so much screen time that can be devoted to the random thought tangents…

Not sure what the point of this book is so far, but it reminds me of my thought process when I can't fall asleep. Not a fan of either...

So, it seems that I am being made to have one of these. well as long as it gets me a good grade, i suppose it will be worth it...
