Something like this would be perfect in the ‘STIMULATE’ section of PresentPlay. This hasn’t made it into the first prototype, but could be a feature added down the line in collaboration with British Gymnastics or a similar body. Food for thought as I think about what would make the game more attractive to investors, as well as having longevity and purpose beyond the screen...
Meaning, Purpose & Fun
Magic Table 360 is EXACTLY the kind of project that I am channeling with PresentPlay. It’s neither brain training nor habit tracking, but simply offering people living with dementia a sense of fun and engagement. Writing up my project, I am looking at a lot of the ‘how’ - how will I get it to users? how will I fund it? how does it work? But it’s also a great time to reflect on the ‘why’. And that is simple: meaning, purpose & fun. Seeing the roll out of Magic Table 360s across care homes is a brilliant reminder that this a market who have needs and that technology can be leveraged to meet them.
Adapting and modifying games for seniors is necessary for all sorts of different reasons. As well as for those living with dementia, games need to be modified for those with impaired vision or sensory loss.

Funding Options: Charities, such as Dementia Adventure who I have reached out to; Grants available from Alzheimer’s Society and Creative Scotland
Development Time Line: 8-12 months; funding would take the main body of time, as well as creating a product that is truly user friendly and available to all abilities.
Marketing; comms sent out through charity mailing and distribution lists, papers such as Dementia Together and Dementia in Scotland, social media to target younger relatives of those living with Dementia.
Route To Market: Identifying and resonating well with the target market (people living with Dementia & carers), being clear in messaging about the purpose of the product: to be a fun experience that give people a sense of purpose, small rewarding tasks. Then communicating with the target market through magazines and journals, hopefully encouraging them to download!
Distribution: Android, Apple, Web.
Development Costs: £10,000 (based on developers charging ~ £50 per hour and the fact we may have to run multiple versions, pay testers and modify to make it correct.
Cost of Product: At this point, hoping to make it FREE to users and have it fully funded by charities, grants, etc, as it will come under care/welfare.

Memory Haven
Exciting new app in the Dementia space created by three Nigerian-Irish teenagers! This app has face and voice recognition features, detect someone’s mood and play music for them. Looking forward to seeing where Memory Haven goes, keep going girls!!

Interesting read on the ability of app games to detect cognitive diseases. I am hoping to use the element of cognitive stimulation to create fun and joy in a game for those living with dementia. The primary goal is to give people a sense of purpose and fun, secondary will be fantastic cognitive benefits!

Amazing to see this cultural hub of Berlin being brought to life through an interactive documentary. The Germans are at the forefront of remembering their history. There is so much potential for the same being done across UK cities...
Feeling a lack of control in real-life can lead to increased stress and anxiety, something many of us felt in 2020. Escaping into a fictional world or conquering a challenge in games give us control back, and ultimately reduces psychological distress.

I wonder if this sense of control that playing video games and other interactive media could be inverted and used to help people overcome mental health problems, fears or personal issues. People may be more willing to open up about their feelings if it’s inside a game world rather than speaking to someone in person/on a screen. So the user could feel in control going down different paths, but really there would be a therapist or professional on the other end, asking questions and engaging as another game player. This could be way too dangerous and leave people vulnerable, but interested to see where this idea of ‘control’ when interacting with stories could take people.
In 2018 at a vegan food festival in Berlin, I tried the iAnimal virtual reality. It was my first time using VR, so I thought I knew what to expect... Turns out I didn't really have a clue. The iAnimal software is used in vegan activism; it shows the lifecycle of farm animals from birth to slaughter. Trigger warnings were issued, along with a reminder that all the footage was taken in industry standard farms. I was given a choice: pig or chicken. I chose pig, not knowing I would actually become the pig. I remember being turned completely upside down as the farmer grabbed my ankle, then discarded in the corner. It was invasive. I've since learned that they use 360 degree cameras and noise cancelling headphones to completely tansport the user into this different reality. I think it's interesting that vegan activists are turning to VR. I guess that, as a society, we're distanced from a lot of cruelty and morally bankrupt practices that go on behind closed doors. VR is an effective way to bring people face-to-face to issues with great immediacy. There is an interesting dissonance between the ignorance we hold as a society regarding certain social issues and the simultaneous hunger that we have for learning new technologies in order to experience more of the world. Despite being horrific, I wonder if the vegans were on the money with this one. Because once the excitement of trying a new gadget has attracted people and the headset is on, the user is forced to open their eyes to someone else's reality.

with the rise in working from home, online and ‘zoom’ fatigue is very real. it’s more important than ever to find new ways to tell stories that energise, engage and stimulate us. mental health is an issue in and of itself during this pandemic, so us storytellers must find ways to connect with audiences that takes them away from staring passively at a screen. challenge accepted!
