تَبَارَكَ ٱلَّذِى جَعَلَ فِى ٱلسَّمَآءِ بُرُوجًا وَ جَعَلَ فِيهَا سِرَٰجًا وَقَمَرًا مُّنِيرًا.

Seeking Reputation
It is reported that ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar – Allāh be pleased with them – said:
Whoever tries to make people hear of his deeds, Allāh will make [some] of His creation hear of him (expose him), and belittle him. Ibn ʿUmar then began to cry.
Wakīʿ b. Al-Jarrāḥ, Al-Zuhd #308.
If Only The Servant Was To Be Patient At The Door Of Allah
One of the Salaf, al Imām Fudayl bin Iyād (رضي الله عنه) said,
“I learned patience from a small boy. On my way to the Masjid one day, I came across a woman beating her son at home. As he was yelling and screaming, he managed to open the door and flee. So his mother locked the door on him. When I returned from the Masjid, I found the boy after having cried and wept sleeping at the door of his home longing for his mother. So his mother’s heart softened and she opened the door for him.” Upon witnessing that, Fudayl bin Iyād cried until his beard became wet with tears, and then he said “SubhānAllāh! If only the servant was to be patient at the door of Allāh, Allāh would surely open it!”
[Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah (6/22)]
The Comfortable Home
It is reported that ʿAbdullāh b. Masʿūd – Allāh be pleased with him – said: There is no comfort or rest for the believer until he meets Allāh.
Wakīʿ b. Al-Jarrāḥ, Al-Zuhd #86
It is reported that Masrūq – Allāh have mercy him – said: There is no house better for the believer than the niche of his grave, for then he will rest from the worries of this world, and be secured from the punishment of Allāh.
Ibid. #87
It is reported that Al-Rabīʿ b. Khuthaym – Allāh have mercy him – said: There is nothing that is away from the believer, and for which he waits, better for him than death.

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim (rahimahullaah) said:
More than one person has said to me: [When I repent to Him (i.e. Allaah); [turn to (Him) in obedience, avoiding disobedience, depending on him and seeking refuge in Him] and performing righteous actions; my sustenance is straitened...
Hiding Righteous Tears
It is reported from Ḥammād b. Zayd that he said, I never saw a man who used to smile more at people than ʾAyyūb.
Al-Dhahabī, Siyar ʾAʿlām Al-Nubalāʾ 5:17
It is reported from Ḥammād b. Zayd that ʾAyyūb [Al-Sakhtiyānī] was once in a gathering when he was effected (moved to tears) by an exhortation, so he began wiping his nose saying, How severe a cold can be!
Op. cit. 5:20
It is also reported from Ḥammād that ʾAyyūb was once overcome with weeping, so he said, A shaykh, when he gets very old, dribbles.
Op. cit. 5:22
Imam Ahmad on Rebelling against Rulers
Abul-Hârith Ahmad b. Muhammad Al-Sâ`igh, the close and respected friend of Imâm Ahmad, reports:
I asked Abû ‘Abdillâh (Imâm Ahmad) about something that had occurred in Baghdâd, and [because of which] some people were considering revolting [against the ruler]. I said, “O Abû ‘Abdillâh, what do you say about taking part in the revolt with these people?” He decried it and started saying, “Subhânallâh! The blood [of the people], the blood [of the people]! I do not believe in this and I do not tell others to do it. For us to suffer our situation in patience is better than the fitnah (tribulation) in which blood is spilt, property is taken, and the prohibited are violated (e.g. the honor of women). Do you not know what happened to the people (in the days of the previous fitnah)?” I said, “And the people today, Abû ‘Abdillâh, are they not in fitnah [because of the ruler]?” He replied, “If so, it is a limited fitnah, but if the sword is raised, the fitnah will engulf everything and there will be no way to escape. To suffer patiently this [current difficulty], where Allâh keeps your religion safe for you is better for you.” I saw him decry revolting against the leaders, and say, “[Do not spill the people's] blood. I do not believe in this and I do not command it.”
Abû Bakr Al-Khallâl, Al-Sunnah article 89.
Truth and Falsehood, Praise and Blame
It is reported that Khālid b. Ma’dan – Allāh have mercy on him – said: Whoever seeks praise by going against the truth, Allāh will throw it back upon him as blame, and whoever faces blame in order to conform to the truth, Allāh will return it as praise for him.
Al-Dhahabī, Siyar A’lām Al-Nubalā` 4:540.
Correcting the two strengths of knowledge and action - Taken from ‘Miftah dar as-Sa’ada’ (Key to the land of happiness)
The saying of Allaah Ta’ala :
“By Al-‘Asr (the time). Verily! Man is in loss, except those who believe and do righteous good deeds, and recommend one another to the truth and recommend one another to patience.”
Ash-Shafiee – may Allaah be pleased with him – said: ‘If all the people reflected over this
Soorah it would be sufficient for them.’
The explanation of this is that this Soorah has four levels, and by completing these, a person can achieve the highest goal in being complete.
The first is: Knowing the truth.
The second: his acting upon the truth.
The third: Him teaching the one who is deficient in the truth.
The fourth: Being patient in learning the truth, and acting upon it, and teaching it.
Allaah Ta’ala mentioned these four levels in this Soorah, and Allaah Subhanahu testified in this Soorah by al-Asr (the time) that everyone is in loss, except those who believe and do righteous, good deeds and they are those who knew the truth, and they testified to the truth.
So the above is a level.
They did righteous, good deeds and they are those who performed worship with what they knew about the truth. So this is a level.
They advise with the truth; they advise one another, teaching and guiding each other. So this is the third level.
They advise with patience; they were patient with the truth, and they advised each other with patience upon the truth, and to be steadfast. And this is the fourth level.
This is the end of completeness; indeed completeness is that a person is complete in himself, and completes others. His completeness is by correcting his two strengths, the strength of knowledge and the strength of actions. Correction of the strength of knowledge is with Emaan, and correction of the strength of actions is by doing righteous deeds, and by completing people other than himself, and by learning this knowledge, and being patient upon it, and his recommending with patience upon knowledge and action.
So this Soorah, even though it is brief, is one of the most collective soorahs of the Qur’aan for goodness from all its different angles.
Praise be to Allaah Who has made the Qur’aan sufficient for everything, a cure from every disease, a guidance to all that is good.

The Messenger of Allaah (صلى الله عليه و سلم) said: “The best of my ummah, is the generation that I have been sent in, then those who proceed after them…” One who studies the condition of these righteous people, reads their biographies, perceives their sublime qualities and virtues and reflects on what they were upon, such as the tremendous character and mannerisms they had; their adherence to the noble Messenger (صلى الله عليه و سلم); their preservation over faith (eemaan), fear of sins and disobedience; wariness of showing off (riyaa’) and hypocrisy; their responsiveness to obedience; vying in performance of good deeds; their aversion to their transitory world and dedication to the everlasting Hereafter.

Abu Bakr and Umar with The Prophet Today
It is reported from Sufyān b. ʿUyainah – Allāh have mercy on him – that a man once asked ʿAlī b. Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī b. ʾAbī Ṭālib – Allāh have mercy on him, What was the status of Abū Bakr and ʿUmar with Rasūlullāh – Allāh’s praise and peace be upon him? He replied, Their place with him is like their place with him today (i.e. where they are in their graves).
Abū Bakr Al-Daynūrī, Al-Mujālasah wa Jawāhir Al-ʿIlm 4:254
The Humble Elite
It is reported that Imām Al-Shāfʿee – Allāh have mercy on him – said, The loftiest in status are those who do not know their own status, and the most virtuous of them are those who do not know their own virtue.
Al-Dhahabī, Siyar ʾAʿlām Al-Nubalāʾ 10:99
Mixing With People of Good Character
It is reported that Al-Fuḍayl b. ʿAyyāḍ – Allāh have mercy on him – said:
Do not mix except with those who have good character; for the one who has good character brings nothing but good, whilst the one who has bad character brings nothing but evil.
Al-Bayhaqī, Shuʿab Al-Īmān, #87044
Three qualities of the da'ee
Shaikh al-Islaam, Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله said:
“No doubt (the Da`ee) should have these three (qualities):
1. Knowledge, before enjoining (good) and forbidding (evil)
2. Gentleness, while doing that
3. Sabr, after doing that.
