Pretty Eyes
A little flash fic for my friend @dona-in-character:
“Just be warned, General,” the doctor said. “Your husband is on some strong drugs. He might be just a bit loopy.”
Poe snickered and Rey elbowed him in the ribs. Even now, nearly a decade after the fall of the First Order, with Poe nearly fifty years old, he still sometimes acted like a ten-year old.
Actually, most of the time he acts like a ten-year old, Rey thought to herself. “Don’t worry, doctor,” she said, giving Poe a dangerous stare. “We’ll be careful.”
As they started into the room, Rey hissed, “Seriously, Dameron!”
“What,” Poe asked with a sly grin on his face.
Finn was still asleep after a procedure to fix his broken leg: he’d been trying to repair the roof of the stables at the Dameron Ranch when he’d slipped and fallen. It had been the absolute worst moment of Poe’s life—until Finn had woken up and the doctors had explained that luckily all that was broken was his leg.
Poe slid into the chair next to Finn’s bed and took Finn’s hand, smiling as he intertwined their fingers.
“You are not going to mess with Finn. Do you hear me?”
Poe’s smile grew. “Of course not.”
“Poe, look me in the eye and say that.”
Poe laughed and shook his head.
“I mean it,” Rey said.
Poe lifted his hands in mock surrender, still chuckling.
“This is why he asked me to be here, isn’t it,” Rey asked.
“Or maybe because you’re his best friend in the galaxy and he wanted to see you,” Poe said.
“No, I think it was to protect him from his husband.”
“Hmmmmmm,” Finn murmured. “Husband?”
Poe was out of his chair and leaning over Finn before Rey could even process what was happening. “Hey, buddy,” Poe said. “How’re you feeling?”
Finn’s eyes fluttered open and he smiled. “Hi.”
Poe laughed. “Hi.”
Rey came over next to the bed, taking Finn’s other hand. “How are you feeling, Finn?”
“Rey!” Finn tried to sit up. Both Rey and Poe pushed him down.
“Hey, buddy. You just had surgery. Let’s take it a little easy.”
“Surgery?”
“Yep,” Poe said.
“But they fixed everything and in a few weeks, you’ll be as good as new,” Rey said.
“Rey,” Finn said, letting go of Poe’s hand and reaching for her. She let him pull her into a hug.
“Oooph,” Rey said as she practically fell over the bed.
“I haven’t seen you in so long,” Finn said, holding her tight.
Poe stood back, trying not to laugh too loudly. Finn was an affectionate drunk, so he had no reason to believe his husband wouldn’t be similarly affectionate hopped up on a bunch of really good painkillers. And so far, Finn was living up to Poe’s expectations.
Rey finally managed to escape Finn’s grasp, putting a hand on his shoulder and smiling down at him. “It’s good to see you too.”
“Rey, Rey, Rey, Rey, Rey,” Finn said, shaking his head. “My good friend Rey.” Finn looked up at her earnestly. “I love you, Rey.”
“I love you too.”
“I mean it,” Finn said, all seriousness.
“I know,” Rey said, getting uncomfortable.
“You’re my best friend.”
“And you’re mine.” Rey was starting to blush.
Poe covered his mouth.
Rey shot him a nasty look.
Poe finally caught Finn’s attention. “Wow.” Finn looked up at his husband in wonder. “Has anyone ever told you you have the prettiest eyes? Rey,” Finn said, simultaneously reaching for Rey’s hand and pointing up at Poe, “doesn’t he have the prettiest eyes you’ve ever seen?”
“Sure,” Rey said.
Poe smiled. “You think I have pretty eyes?”
“Poe,” Rey warned.
“Yeah,” Finn breathed out. “The prettiest.”
Poe chuckled. “Well, thank you, buddy. I think you have nice eyes too.”
“Rey,” Finn said, turning, wide-eyed. “He thinks I have nice eyes.”
“I heard,” she said. What kinds of kriffing medicines did they give him?
“Ask him if he’s single,” Finn said to her.
Rey nearly choked. “What?”
Poe’s mouth was in pain from trying hard not to smile too wide.
“Ask him if he’s single,” Finn hissed at her, jerking his head towards Poe.
Finn’s eyes were so big and pleading, she couldn’t say no. She looked over at Poe, who was standing there trying to look innocent. She grit out, “My friend here wants to know if you’re single.”
Poe’s smile lit up his whole face. He held up his hand, where he wore a simple wedding band. “Afraid not.” He looked down at Finn. “Sorry, buddy.”
“Yeah,” Finn said, clearly disappointed. “Sorry.”
“Poe,” Rey warned.
Poe burst into laughter.
“Poe,” Rey said, even more severely. “Tell him.”
“Tell me what,” Finn asked.
Poe leaned forward. “I’m married to you, moof-milker.” He kissed the tip of Finn’s nose.
“Me,” Finn said. He looked over to Rey for confirmation. “He’s married to me? I’m married to him?”
“Unfortunately,” Rey said, glaring at Poe.
“Hey,” Poe said.
“Pretty Eyes is my husband,” Finn said, smiling. “I’m married to Pretty Eyes.”
“Beings usually call me Poe.”
“Poe,” Finn repeated. “Poe.” He looked over at Rey. “Rey, my husband’s name is Poe.”
“Yeah,” Rey said, sinking into a chair. “I heard.” She shook her head. “Seriously, what do they have him on?”
“I don’t know,” Poe said, “but I want some.”
“Hmmmm,” Finn asked, looking confused.
“Don’t worry, sweetie,” Poe said, moving so that he could lean up next to Finn in the bed. He kissed his husband’s hand. “We’ll tell you about it in the morning.”
“Oh,” Finn said, already starting to doze again. “So in the morning, we’re gonna get married?”
“Sure, buddy,” Poe said.
“Can Rey come,” Finn asked, his eyes already fluttering.
“Of course. She’ll stand up with you.”
“Good,” Finn said. “Want her to be there.”
“Then, she’ll be there,” Poe said.
“Love you, Pretty Eyes,” Finn whispered.
“Love you too,” Poe said, pressing a light kiss to his cheek.
Finn was out again, and the sight of Poe looking at his husband like a pining idiot was enough for Rey to forget how angry she ought to be.
For a moment, everything was quiet.
Then, Finn sat up, wide awake. “We have to plan the wedding, guys!”
Poe fell off the bed.
Rey scrambled into a defensive posture.
Finn almost immediately fell back into a deep sleep.
“Kriff,” Poe said, “nearly gave me a heart attack.”
As Poe started pulling himself off the floor, Rey chuckled. “You deserved that.”
Poe laughed. “Probably did.” He nodded at her. “Glad to know you were ready to protect us, Rey.”
“Nerfherder,” Rey said, falling back into her chair.
“That’s Pretty Eyes to you.”

a very special commission for @bluestem10‘s amazing fic Be Here Now (which, coincidentally, is one of my favorite FinnPoe fics ever) 💙💜
“don’t you feel a little self-conscious drawing finn and poe in almost the exact same pose over and over?” yes, and i’m not going to stop
Poe to Finn: “Are you fucking insane!?”
Thank you for waiting and for the prompt! [From this list of four word prompts.]
“Are you fucking insane!?”
Finn spun around, losing his grip on the lightsaber in his panic. It fell to the ground and rattled as it rolled along to rest at Poe’s feet.
“Poe, I just - I - I was gonna tell you…”
“Oh, you were, were you?” Poe scoffed harshly, glaring from underneath furrowed brows. He gave the lightsaber a disdainful look before casting his eyes, dark with anger, on Finn once more.
Finn felt himself becoming angry as well. What right did Poe have to judge him for trying to connect with the Force? Rey had said she’d sensed it in him, and he had too. There were moments of connection, moments where he felt the wholeness Rey had described…
Why should he ignore the Force just because it made his boyfriend mad for no apparent reason?
When Finn had told Poe of his possible connection to the Force, he had expected… well, he wasn’t sure what he’d expected. Support? Interest? Instead, all he’d gotten was a harsh warning not to listen to Rey, to stay away from the Force at all costs.
It had been a week since that conversation. Since then, Rey had been teaching him everything she knew, and had been letting him borrow the lightsaber when she didn’t need it. Finn had been hoping to prevent Poe from finding out, but maybe it was better that he had. At least they could have this fight and get it over with…
… and figure out what it would do to their relationship.
“Actually, no. I wasn’t. I was never going to tell you. And you know why?” Finn said, an edge creeping into his voice. “Because I knew this was the way you’d react. I knew you’d refuse to try and see this differently. Why would I have told you when I knew all I’d get is judgement?”
Poe refused to answer, just continued glaring from beneath his dark curls, gaze flickering between the lightsaber and Finn. There was anger there, but also something else, something more…
“Why the hell do you care if I’m Force sensitive?” Finn asked, truly wanting to know the answer. He had no idea why Poe was doing this, and it made him feel enraged and confused and guilty all at once. Finn took the steps separating him and Poe and stood right in front of the pilot. He stared into Poe’s eyes and tried to figure out what the something else was, that other feeling welling up to the surface…
Poe closed his eyes, turned around, and left.
The next time Finn saw Poe was that night, when he returned to their quarters. Poe was hunched over his workbench, fiddling with screws and wires; it was what he always did when he was upset and refusing to deal with his feelings.
They stepped around each other carefully, neither of them saying a word for hours. Finally, when they were both sitting in their living room, as far away from each other on their couch as they could get, Finn heard Poe clear his throat hesitantly.
“You didn’t see what happened to Leia,” Poe said, so quietly that Finn almost missed it. Finn turned to Poe, his brow furrowed in confusion.
Poe sighed deeply, letting his shoulders drop and casting his eyes up to the ceiling.
“When Kylo Ren… Ben… left, she was absolutely heartbroken. I’d never seen her like that before,” Poe confessed. He paused, and Finn listened intently for what he would say next.
“I don’t know much about the Force, but I know it has the power to take the people we care about away from us,” Poe said, looking at Finn as he did. “And I don’t want it to take you away from me.”
Fear. That was the other thing Finn had seen in Poe’s eyes: Fear so strong that it now drowned out any anger, fear so strong that it made Poe begin to cry.
Finn, for the second time that day, closed the gap between them. But this time he wrapped his arms around Poe, pressed kisses to the other man’s cheeks, and held him close until the sobs subsided.
“I’ll never let anything take me away from you,” Finn said, smiling softly as Poe turned around in his arms to face him. “I’ll always be here, Poe.”
“Always?”
“Always.”
