What to ask tarot

So tarot card questions are actually a lot different than asking a specific question. You wouldn’t say, for example, “Is my dad going to graduate?” because if you got the 3 of cups, you would be utterly confused as to why I did not provide a yes or a no. So below I am going to list questions that are good to ask the cards.

Tapping Into Your Psychic Senses

Every single person on the planet has psychic abilities, but most people never realize that they’re using them. As Tess Whitehurst says in her book You Are Magical, “There is almost certainly something you assume that everyone can perceive that is actually a perception that is relatively unique to you.”

For example: you may be a gifted artist. Drawing and painting come naturally to you, and you have an intuitive sense of form and color. You probably know people who claim that they “don’t have an artistic bone in their body” or “can’t even draw a stick figure,” but you can’t bring yourself to believe it. Surely, those people are just psyching themselves out, because if art comes so easily to you, everyone must be able to do it to some extent, right?

Psychic abilities are similar. You’ve probably been tapping into at least one psychic sense all your life, but it feels so normal to you that you assume everyone experiences the world this way.

Once you become aware of your innate psychic abilities, you can start to harness them. For this reason, I think it’s a good idea to become familiar with (and comfortable using!) your natural psychic gifts before you try to learn any kind of divination.

Read over the following list of common psychic senses. Does one or more of them sound familiar? Once you recognize which of these you resonate with, focus on strengthening that gift over the next couple of weeks. You’ll be amazed by how easily you’re able to tap into it once you know how!

Clairvoyance: Clear Seeing

Contrary to popular opinion, the word “clairvoyance” does not describe any and all psychic abilities. Someone with clairvoyance receives psychic messages through their sense of sight. They may see these messages with their physical eyes, or see images in their mind’s eye. Seeing auras is an example of clairvoyance in action.

You may be clairvoyant if…

You often see flashes of light, blurred figures, or other visual phenomena that others do not see. [Note: This is NOT the same as visual hallucinations. Clairvoyants typically see things with their mind’s eye, not their physical eyes, and can differentiate between their visions and what is physically in front of them.]

You often experience random mental images that seem to have nothing to do with what’s going on around you.

Your meditations are primarily visual — for example, if you meditate on the element of water, you may see a bubbling fountain in your mind’s eye.

You are a visual learner.

Ways to Strengthen Clairvoyance

Keep a journal of the mental images you receive “out of nowhere.” Do these images mean anything to you? Do individual visions fit into a larger pattern?

Meditate on the energy systems in your body, starting from the feet and working up to the crown of the head. What does your energy look like? Are the colors bright and clear, or more faded and muddy? Does the energy move quickly, or is it slow and sluggish? Are there certain areas of your body where the energy seems to be tied up or stuck? How does its appearance correspond to your life? 

Do research into auras and what the different aura colors mean. Do you always seem to see or think of a certain color when you’re around a certain person? How does that color represent that person’s energy and personality? Write down your findings.

Clairaudience: Clear Hearing

Someone with clairaudience receives psychic messages through their sense of hearing. They may hear messages with their physical ears or “hear” them in their mind. A medium who hears spirits is an example of someone using clairaudience.

You may be clairaudient if…

You sometimes “hear” things in your mind, as if someone else was talking to you from inside your head. [Note: This is NOT the same as “hearing voices” or auditory hallucinations. Clairaudients usually “hear” messages with their mind, not their physical ears, and they can distinguish between psychic messages and physical, “real world” sounds.]

Sometimes, when you listen to music or watch a movie, a specific lyric or line of dialogue seems to jump out at you, as if it were a special message.

Your meditations are primarily auditory — for example, if you meditate on the element of water, you may hear a babbling brook.

You are an auditory learner.

Ways to Strengthen Clairaudience

Keep a journal of the messages you “hear” out of nowhere. Are they consistent, forming a larger pattern? Do they all seem to be “in the same voice,” or coming from the same source? (If so, this could be a deity or spirit guide reaching out to you.)

Do a meditation with the intention of holding a conversation with a helpful spirit guide. (If you are not comfortable working with spirits, you can set the intention of speaking to your inner self.) What does their voice sound like? Is it different from or similar to your own? Do they speak with an accent or have a unique inflection? Write down your thoughts.

Experiment with shufflemancy. This is a modern form of divination where you put a playlist on shuffle and receive a psychic message from the song that plays first. (You can find playlists specifically made for shufflemancy online, or make your own.) How does the song make you feel? Are there certain lyrics that jump out to you? Write down your thoughts.

Clairsentience: Clear Feeling

Someone with clairsentience feels psychic messages, either through their body or through their emotions. They may feel physical sensations, like an upset stomach, or may be very sensitive to emotional energies. Intuitively picking up on someone’s emotions without needing to ask is an example of clairsentience.

You may be clairsentient if…

You often feel physical sensations, like a hot flash or a cold chill, out of nowhere.

You are able to feel other people’s emotions — you can always tell when someone has had a bad day, even if they’re trying to hide it.

You can sense the “vibe” of a room as soon as you walk in. Do certain buildings feel “angry” or “sad” to you? Can you always tell the energy of a party even if you just arrived?

Your meditations primarily focus on tactile sensations — for example, if you meditate on the element of water, you may feel waves lapping at your feet.

Ways to Strengthen Clairsentience

Pay attention to your “gut feelings.” Do you feel a sinking sensation when thinking about something, only for it to go badly later? Do you feel a warm, fuzzy sensation thinking about something, only for it to go really well? Write down your experiences — and be honest. It’s okay if your gut feeling doesn’t always match the outcome.

Do a pathworking meditation (this is just a type of meditation that focuses on taking a mental journey) to a forest, or a beach, or some other location that appeals to you. Try to feel as many tactile sensations as possible, as if you were really there. Feel the grass or sand under your feet, feel the wind in your hair, feel the sun on your skin. Write down your experience.

Practice feeling the energy of a plant or crystal. Reach out and touch the plant/crystal, and try to feel it out. Does it have a calm, stable energy, or is it more bright and zingy? Try feeling a different plant/crystal and see how it feels different. Write down your experience.

Note: Some (but not all) clairsentients are also empaths, people who take on the emotions of others as if they were their own. All empaths are clairsentient, but not all clairsentient people are empaths. You may be an empath if you often find yourself matching the emotions of the people you’re around — you cry when they cry, laugh when they laugh, etc.

Claircognizance: Clear Knowing

Claircognizence is the gift of psychic knowing — people with this ability often “just know” things, even if they should have no way of knowing. They may know what someone is about to say before they say it, or know personal information about someone they just met.

You may be claircognizant if…

You “just know” what’s going on with your friends and family, even if they haven’t told you. For example, you may suddenly feel like you need to call your sister, only to find out after you call that she just broke up with her boyfriend.

You always know who a text is from as soon as your phone dings, or always know what song is going to play next on shuffle.

You often know things about new people as soon as you meet them, only for them to confirm it later. Did you know your friend was a vegetarian before he told you, even though you’d never shared a meal with him?

Your meditations often include “downloads” of information, where you feel like the answer to your question or some other revelation has just been dropped into your brain.

Ways to Strengthen Claircognizance

Every time your phone goes off, try to guess who the message is from. Keep a tally of how often you’re right vs. wrong.

Do a meditation with the intention of receiving the answer to a specific question. Retreat to a place of stillness and focus on your breath until the answer to the question “just comes to you.” Write down your experience.

This is a game I used to play with my sister before I knew what claircognizance was: have a friend show you a picture of someone they know, but whom you have never met before. Focus on the picture, and see if you get any info about the person — are they a jock? Do they like rock music? What’s their personality like? Get your friend to confirm or deny the info you got from the picture, and keep a tally of how often you’re right vs. wrong.

The Other Clairs

There are two other “clair” senses that are less common, so I’m not going to talk about them at length here. Clairalience, or “clear smelling,” refers to receiving psychic messages through smell. (If you smell roses out of nowhere, with no roses in sight, you may be using clairalience.) Clairgustance, or “clear tasting,” refers to receiving psychic messages through taste. (If you taste chocolate out of nowhere, you may be using claigustance.)

In my experience, these psychic senses are less common than the ones listed above. Most people I know who have clairalience or clairgustance seem to use it as a secondary sense, in addition to a primary sense like clairvoyance or clairsentience.

Conclusion

You are probably using at least one of these psychic senses every day, without even knowing it. Most people have two to three “main” psychic senses, but some may regularly and easily use all of them. For example, my primary psychic senses are clairsentience and claircognizance, but I also find myself receiving messages through clairaudience fairly often. It’s rare for me to receive clairvoyant messages, but it has happened.

Once you’ve identified the psychic senses that you naturally lean towards, you can begin to develop and strengthen them.

Those general tips apply for spiritual practices in general too!

Greetings !

There’s has been an explosion of online readings in the past years, including many free divination services and games. I'm talking about tarot and all cartomancy instruments, cowrie readings, intuitive readings, astrology, runes, oneiromancy, etc. It’s awesome, truly ! Best time to be a psychic 😂 But there are a couple rules you can apply to get a good experience out of this.

I want to give some spiritual hygiene advice in order for you to protect yourself and get the most out of any reading, if you wanna partake. The post has general advice, a section for querents/clients that seek (free) readings. But there's one for readers looking to offer said services, and that want to protect themselves and minimise undesirable side effects of providing readings for other people.

CLEANSE AND BLESS YOUR DEVICES (and you)!

Cleanse and anoint your technology.

That includes phone, laptop, tablet, consoles, etc. You can simply bless your screen cleaning solution, to start. Removing physical dirt is the first step to removing unwanted spiritual gross stuff, and this reasoning applies to everything: your person (!), your house, car, closet, office, what have you. Just be careful to avoid microphones, and any water sensitive part of them, if you choose to use a liquid to clean(se).

Cleansing can also apply to the contents of your devices: delete old texts, especially if you’re they’re negative, random or tie you in the past. Same with screenshots, old files, notes or even apps. You’re making space for something new and more in tune with your current needs and desires. You can also change your protective sleeve or case if they’re old and damaged.

Then, you can apply/use any blessing or protective powder, liquid, spell, plant, sigils, charms, etc. to protect yourself against any unwanted energy, evil eye, energy vampires, any stagnancy, spiritual attacks or even from scrolling endlessly ! Be creative, but be precise with what you ask for, if you can. You can also use reversal spells, if applicable. Blessings and spells need a good cleanse first to work effectively.

Cleanse yourself (and do some self-care).

I think this one is a little bit less forgotten than the former part. You're about to read or be read. You want the best connection and clarity possible. This is for both parties.

Start with the physical stuff. Take a shower. BRUSH YOUR TEETH. (I swear this really takes you far). Be in a clean space. Make your bed. Open the window. I could go on. Try to tie or cover your hair/head if you can. Wash your hands if you do the readings. Be in a good mood (if you can)! Be well-rested, eat something and drink water. Those are the most important. Avoid dressing in black: white is the best color for that, but blue and purple work very well. So you don’t keep too much extra energy on you. You can spray some good-smelling house spray or incense too. Light a candle, put relaxing music.

Ask/pray/do rituals for your head to be clear, for your words to ring true, for the energy to flow. For the exchange to go smoothly. Anything relevant to you.

The more you prepare and take this seriously, the better your experience it will be. You're showing to the universe/your guides/your ancestors, etc. your willingness to hear about the future or access sensitive information that is practically impossible to get outside divination. You're gazing into the future. You put in the effort, okay ? So they need to deliver!

I'll give some more advice below, to correspond on your side of the fence (reader or querent).

FOR CLIENTS: Finding the best reader and/or service.

Think of your readers as shop clerks/salespersons in a store.

Etiquette first !

There is an endless offer of services. Some will be more or less fitting for your needs, wants, budget, personality, current issues. You might have to browse a bit to find what you exactly want. But not too much or you'll get carried away. But regardless of that, the common sense of shopping somewhere apply. Greet the person in front of you. Thank them for their time once you're done. Discuss and ask questions so you can both narrow down what you're getting. This will reduce unnecessary frustration born of miscommunication.

How to narrow down my choice ?

Here, the 1st most helpful thing is your INTUITION/GUT FEELING. The world's best reader won't help you if you don't vibe with them, and subconsciously are closed off from them, energetically. And then, the 2nd thing to use: your reading comprehension and communication skills.

3rd best thing is reading the rules, services of your reader, and the former querents' testimonials. The first and second ones will help you see if there's what you seek, if there's something more fitting offered by the reader, or if you should do business elsewhere. The latter is more of a sample of their services. Especially for games that happen in asks/reblogs. Is the reading style okay with you ? Are you okay with brutally honest readers? With those that will provide what you need to hear and not want ? (that's most readers). But they mustn't bypass/dodge your question. Or they should tell you they won't answer that. Do you want readers that provide advice/"homework"? (that's mostly paid readings). Are the topics mentioned okay for you? Is the reader providing what you need ? For example: you may be wanting a 18+ relationship reading and the reader may not offer them.

If the answer is "no" to those questions, just consider not getting a reader, or seeking another one. When in doubt, you can just ask politely though.

Which questions will help me get the best answer possible?

I'll make a post for good questions to ask, but there are lots of good ones on Tumblr already. I'll link my own tag here. Don't forget to adapt this to the rules of your readers !

General rules: asking about yourself/your POV/your shortcomings/qualities/etc. and being willing to hear hard things will help. Nothing is set in stone so you can change the icky stuff for the better. And the more you'll know about yourself, the more in charge of your destiny you'll be. Open questions for in-depth topics work well.

IMPORTANT PSA ABOUT ENERGY EXCHANGE: Especially for free readings.

Do not engage in any reading if you have a bad feeling. If your intuition tells you "no", or hesitate a lot. Do not hesitate to bypass getting a reading if you're just extremely skeptical or didn't engage in basic steps to make the experience good.

Saying bye or thank you, or just sweeping the floors etc. are some good ways to close the exchange. If the feeling lingers once it's over, cleanse again.

FOR READERS: ATTRACTING THE RIGHT CROWD (and having a good time)!

Getting your client base (without a headache).

Readers: you can pray or use spells to attract clients that fit your services or match your energy, or make undesirable people leave (see section above). By that I mean rude people, people who never read rules or people who want readings you’re not providing, anons that harass you. This method works especially well with conjured items, but any magic is suitable (Black folks only). Feel free to HMU if you’re Black and you’d like some combos and rituals that work well !

However, start with stating your rules and boundaries clearly. And over and over (and over!) again. Save your energy for actual readings. Have them in your bio and your pinned post. Have a carrd if you want. Regularly reblog posts with your rules in it. Indicate the form of payment again. Also say clearly what sort of business you WON’T do/will ignore. List: your tools/services, what you need to perform the service (a name? initials? an emoji ? an email address? just payment? Tumblr handle?). You can also give length of the readings and the contents (that's more for paid readings).

Many people don’t do health matters, legal issue or readings involving death. Or 3rd party readings. Or 18+ readings. Or love readings. That's fine, but state it clearly and someplace visible.

But, also indicate everywhere if you have a dedicated service that covers a certain topic and you won’t mention it elsewhere. I took inspiration from @clairdevenus on Twitter, a traditional astrologer and tarot reader. (her service page especially inspired me. Find it here) For example: you offer tarot, playing cards and oracle cards readings. Say in the description of all 3 that you will only cover [past life] readings in tarot. Especially if you’re popular for past life readings. Some people will only read until they find the service they’d like. Or won’t read past asks saying “I only read past life readings with tarot”.

Spiritual hygiene tips

Bless your instruments always. Tie your hair or cover it with a scarf if you can, especially if you're prone to spiritual headaches. Wash your hands. Anoint yourself with oils/concoctions of your practices for clarity, but also for protection. Especially your hands and forehead.

If you do back-to-back readings, change clothes when you're done for the day. Take a shower and ask for it to be cleansing, or use conjured/magickal baths, oils or soap to cleanse things away the energy if it was taxing. Have a dedicated space that is enclosed to put your instruments away and out of sight (if you don't have one already), especially if you did exhausting readings. Cleanse your instruments before.

Bless the food and/or drinks you'll consume after readings, so that you may get energy back. Or your good mood, or whatever you feel necessary.

Sweep the floors, shake your tarot mat (outside), do some cleansing in your space regularly.

Please ask your divination instruments if you can even do free readings ! And ask them (especially your tarot cards) if they’re fine with reading for strangers in general.

Even more if you’re prone to entities spiritually latching onto you, or to being victim of energy vampires (physical or spiritual!), if your birth chart or any divination performed on you asked you not to provide such work for free.

In my culture, we say that working for any stranger for free, especially without vetting them (as one can in-person) will make you lose your luck and blessings in a permanent manner. Especially when performed repeatedly. I’m pretty sure this is something from African diasporas.

For witchcraft practitioners who work with plants, be it in spells, charms, being tactile in nature or gardening, this list contains some of the plants that can bring harm if used incorrectly or have a high level of toxicity.

Always be cautious and so research on any plant or herb you’re planning to utilize or grow.

Rosary Pea (Abrus precatorius) • Ingesting a single seed can kill an adult human. Symptoms of poisoning include nausea, vomiting, convulsions, liver failure, and death, usually after several days.

Wolfsbane (Aconitum spp) • All parts are poisonous, if ingested, it usually causes burning, tingling, and numbness in the mouth, followed by vomiting and nervous excitement. Even casual skin contact should be avoided. Symptoms include numbness, tingling, and cardiac irregularity.

White Baneberry (Actaea pachypoda) • All parts are poisonous, especially the berries, the consumption of which has a sedative effect on cardiac muscle tissue and can cause cardiac arrest.

Arnica • Poisonous in great quantities. Symptoms of poisoning include gastroenteritis, fever, nausea, dizziness, abnormal cardiac frequency, diarrhea, skin reaction and internal hemorrhage in the digestive system.

Azalea (Rhododendron simsii) • If ingested it is poisonous. Continued contact should be avoided. Symptoms of poisoning are nausea, depression, respiratory difficulties, coma. It is rarely lethal.

Anthurium (Anthurium spp) • Prevent getting in contact with the sap. Symptoms are skin irritation and eye irritation.

Cedronella canariensis • Can cause skin irritation, indigestions. Should not be used or touch by pregnant people or lactating people.

Belladonna (Atropa belladonna) • Extremely poisonous, it is lethal and it can be absorbed through skin. Symptoms of poisoning are fogged vision, staggering, loss of balance, dry mouth and throat, headache, skin eruptions, constipation, confusion, hallucination and convulsion.

Lamprocapnos spectabilis • Can be poisonous in big quantities, which causes convulsions and other symptoms in the nervous system.

Iris versicolor • Symptoms pf poisoning include nausea, vomit, mouth and throat irritation, irritation on the digestive system, skin irritation, headache and epiphora.

Bryony • All parts are poisonous and any type of contact causes death.

Ranunculus • If ingested, the juice can cause serious damage to the digestive system.

Acorus calamus • Toxic in big quantities, can cause hallucination, nausea and vomit.

Physostigma venenosum • Extremely toxic, can cause intense sweating, extreme salivation, nausea, vomit, diarrhea, irregular cardiac rhythm, change in blood pressure, confusion, convulsion, coma, muscular weakness, paralysis, respiratory difficulties and death.

Cinnamomum camphora • Skin rash, itchiness, respiratory difficulties, mouth, eyes, face or lips swelling.

Ricinus communis • Poisonous. Can cause burning in the mouth and throat, abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea. At a long period of intoxication, can cause dehydration, low blood pressure. If not treated, death will occur in 3 to 5 days

Daphne • Poisonous. Causes burns in the mouth and digestive tract, followed by coma. Can cause death.

Vinca • Must not be ingested, causes nausea, vomit, loss of hair, loss of hearing, dizziness, bleeding, nervous difficulties, convulsions, liver damage and death.

Asclepias tuberosa • Cardiac difficulties, nausea, vomit and skin rash.

Agave spp • The juice of a number of species causes acute contact dermatitis, with blistering lasting several weeks and recurring itching for several years thereafter.

Columbine (Aquilegia spp) • Seeds and roots contain cardiogenic toxins which cause both severe gastroenteritis and heart palpitations if consumed, columbine poisonings are easily fatal.

Mercurialis perennis • Symptons happen after some hours, they include vomit, pain, gastritis, renal inflammation and sleepiness.

Colocasia • All parts are poisonous and cause mouth and tongue irritation. Can be fatal.

Gelsemium • Extremely poisonous, even in low quantities. Causes headache, problems with vision, difficulty swallowing, dizziness, muscular complications, convulsions, respiratory complications and low blood pressure.

Laburnum • Causes excitation, loss of balance, convulsions and coma. Can be lethal.

Helleborus • Dangerous if ingested or applied on the skin. Cause irritation in the mouth and throat and low blood pressure. Big quantities can cause vomit, diarrhea, difficulties swallowing, nervous system complications, blindness, convulsion, paralysis, respiratory complications and death.

Artemisia vulgaris • Prolonged contact may be fatal, so it’s best to use in a open and ventilated place.

Oak (Quercus): In big quantities is poisonous and affects the renal kidneys.

Taxus baccata • Fatal. No symptoms come as a warning.

Hypericum perforatum • Causes fatigue, dizziness, confusion, dry mouth and can affect medicaments.

Angel’s Trumpet (Brugmansia spp) • All parts of this plant contain toxins and are often fatal. Effects of ingestion may include losing connection with reality and hallucinations.

Foxglove (Digitalis purpurea) • The leaves, seeds, and flowers are poisonous. These cause irregular heartbeat, general digestive upset, and confusion; can be fatal.

Friendly Reminder: Salt and Casting Circles Outside

Please don’t cast circles using Salt outside, especially in the soil. Salt is absorbent and takes water away from plant life, therefore effectively killing off most things.

There is a reason why in the Ancient Near East (Egypt, Mesopotamia, Armenia, etc), Spain, Portugal, etc it was so common to SALT THE EARTH of conquered cities, or even convicted criminals, to prevent re-inhabitation . It destroys soil nutrients, absorbency, and heavily delays and/or stops plant growth all together.

So please, my Witchy Siblings, seek safer alternatives when working outside. Cast a circle in stones or branches. Draw one into the soil itself. Use a biodegradable material like eggshells instead. But please, do NOT use Salt.
