She stared at herself in the mirror once the dress was on. It fell just above her bare knees, the lace tickling her pale skin, and the top half exposed her shoulders and collarbones in a way she hadn’t done voluntarily since she was extremely young. She turned and looked back, catching a glimpse of the upper edges of her shoulder blades, before facing front again. She could see almost every scar that lined her body, along her arms and legs and upper chest. There were more beneath the silk exterior. Even though she refused to look at them for too long, she knew there were more.

The dress, however, fit perfectly. She hadn’t even dared to try it on before.
