He’d missed this, the easy back and forth, the way Varric could convey everything with just a single look. No one else understood him the way he did, and he’d felt like half a pair of boots without him. “I happen to be very responsible,” he argued, mostly out of habit – though his history showed the very opposite and they both knew it. He let the dwarf lead the way – Maker knew he was still utterly confused when it came to this place. He would’ve loved to have blamed it on the fact he was newly arrived, but if he used that as a defense, Varric would surely bring up that he often had gotten lost in Kirkwall after living there for years. “If it’s who I suspect is here, then definitely yelling,” he agreed. “Might be nice though, to have our little family back together.”
instead of dignifying hawke’s statement with a proper response, varric slowed to silently arch a brow in his friend’s direction. he tried for a look that was full of judgement, but couldn’t help the smile continuing to spread across his lips. in the end, he shook his head in favour of keeping up the act, then pretends to sigh as they continue on their journey to the kitchens. varric’s laughter was a low rumble at the comment, though when hawke mentioned family, it calmed into a begrudgingly warm smile. “well, then we’ll definitely need to drop by later. but for now, i believe i was told of a crippling hunger?” theatrically, he pushed open the final door to the kitchen. (the empty room responded with anti-climatic silence.) “we’ve got... bread, and leftover turnip stew? what i think is roasted mutton. some cheese.”
