guardianofbears:
After Arthur handed the ice cream back to Gwen the rest of the day went by like he was on a high. For once, he’d gotten a second chance with the prettiest girl he’d seen with ice cream. Work dragged on throughout the week, but that didn’t matter so much - when was the last time he’d felt this giddy? When was the last time he’d been on a date? As he washes his hair, he tries to remind himself to act like a normal person. Don’t talk too much. Ask her questions. Should he offer to pay for their dinner? Or was she the sort of girl who wanted to pay on the first date? How would he even bring that up? Maybe just a simple I’ll get the check if that’s alright with you. No really, I don’t mind– And if she insisted further after that, he’d let it be, not wanting to be too pushy. Thoughts continue to swirl while he dries his head and dresses well enough to make a decent first impression - khakis, not jeans, and a white button-up rather than a simple t-shirt.
However, once Arthur gets to his car, he worries that the little luck that came his way had run out. The engine would turn, but wouldn’t start. And then he’d stepped in the only corner of his yard that still had mud in it. The first Uber he’d called cancelled, claiming his home was too difficult to find, and the second one ran late. When he tried to call Gwen on his phone, he couldn’t get a decent enough signal to even send her a text message explaining the situation. When he finally gets to the florist, they’ve in the middle of closing up and only have a stock of wilting flowers they planned on throwing away. And as soon as Arthur gets back onto Main Street to go to Miku’s, the dark sky opens and his own personal rain cloud seems to follow him all the way to the restaurant.
He’s late. And not even fashionably late. He’s late enough for Gwen to have gotten up and left, late enough for her to have thought that he ghosted her or forgot about their plans or simply didn’t care. He doesn’t expect to see her at the restaurant, and as he passes by the windows at the front, he doesn’t see her face amongst the other families or couples enjoying their night far more than Arthur does. He’s still willing to go inside and ask the wait staff if they’ve seen her when Arthur, at last, spots her in the car park. “Gwen!” He calls out to her, thought at this point in the night, Arthur doesn’t expect her to turn around or pay him much attention. “I know I’m late – I’m sorry, you wouldn’t believe the night I had. But that’s…not really an excuse –” He holds out the flowers he’s still holding, which seem to fall apart in his hands. “I tried to get you something, but this was all they had left –” He offers her a meek smile but can’t imagine Gwen accepting the dying gift. “–Nevermind, I can just throw these in the trash.”
There’s something inside Gwen that wants to curl into a ball and just dramatically allow the rain to wash over her. She knows she shouldn’t be this upset over some guy she barely knew, and yet, she couldn’t help it. Whenever Gwen had seen Arthur, this gut feeling built up inside her, one that made her feel like whatever his deal was, it was something good, and she wanted to be there to experience it. Plus, someone like Gwen didn’t get stood up. She was confident and went after what she wanted, and if this was just some cowardly way of rejection, it stung worse than being direct.
She was about to give up, moving towards her car, when her name stops her in her tracks. Part of Gwen tells herself that she shouldn’t turn around. She’d given him enough chances, and if she was going to keep being let down, there was no reason to keep him around. She should keep going and keep her chin held high as she did so. But she didn’t. That gut feeling stirred within her, and Gwen turned around to see Arthur, soaking wet, holding the saddest bouquet of drenched flowers in his hand.
Gwen should be furious, or upset, or something. But she couldn’t help but surprisingly feel flattered at the offer. If he didn’t want to be on a date with her, Arthur wouldn’t have bothered showing up at all, and he especially wouldn’t have showed up in the rain. And no one had gotten her flowers before, at least not when they weren’t told or expected to. It didn’t matter what they looked like, or how late he was. What mattered was that he tried, and he was genuine about it. Gwen softly reached out and took the bouquet, a tiny smile appearing on her lips. “Come on, let’s get you out of the rain. Do you want to go have some coffee?”
penelopexrosen:
“Well then let’s go.” Penelope grabbed his hand, pulling him to where others were dancing. “Who cares what they think. It’s a festival, just eat, drink, have fun. And if anyone says anything about your costume, then clearly nothing better to do today.”
jackson laughed and obliged, allowing penelope to lead him to the dance floor. “okay, so what are the rules?” he asked with a grin. “you’ve got a good point. clearly you’re the expert here.”
dcylght:
“I’d say I’m celebrating the end of the summer more than anything else. Bring out the pumpkin spice and warm sweaters already,” The redhead chuckled, setting her half-drunk plastic cup of ale down on the picnic table. She really shouldn’t feel any sort of anxiety around the younger woman. After all, it’s just a festival. Things were supposed to be lighthearted, right? “Ohh, you’ll have to let me make you my cranberry-tangerine sangria some night! I didn’t know you drank?” Not that drinking at a fair like this really meant anything good or bad, but Fiona had always taken Gwen for the more reserved type.
“i will say i’m a big fan of fall fashion,” gwen replied with a grin. “my collection of jackets have been sorely missed this season. plus, you’re right, i haven’t had a pumpkin spice latte in forever.” of course, she would have to wait to get one, she realized sadly. gwen gasped softly at the offering. “that sounds amazing! yes, please,” she accepted with a grin. “really? of course. honestly, there’s nothing better than a glass of wine when you’re unwinding. i mean, i don’t usually overdo it, but a few is nice.”
melliflvents:
he shrugs his shoulders at the question, shaking his head slightly. “i have to be honest with you, i’m no doctor. so i obviously have no idea what i’m talking about.” edric’s assuming he’s probably messed up some of the information because he doesn’t know a lot about it. “i don’t know, i think i heard one time once you’re off caffeine, you feel better. your body produces it more naturally or something.”
“your body produces caffeine?” jackson asked skeptically. something about that didn’t exactly seem right, but what if edric was onto something? he was no neuroscientist, but if the energy came from somewhere, there had to be a way your body knew it was caffeine and knew to get energy from it, right?
hollisticallyoptimistic:
“I mean…..I like watching survivor?” he offered with a slight shrug.
“but living it?” gwen asked, wondering why he seemed so combative on any point
hollisticallyoptimistic:
“Please do, I’m boderline concerned, dude.”
“why?” he asked, confused.
guardianofbears:
“Sushi and ice cream. Well, I,” Arthur attempts to swallow away his own nervousness. “I look forward to learning what else you’re a fan of. Miku’s. Thursday at seven. I’ll lend you my ear all night,” Once the words leave his lips, however, a deep-set hue blushes against his cheeks. “Sorry that…sounded better in my head than it did out loud. Don’t worry, Asian and sushi is just fine,” He assures her, then picks up the cup of ice cream Gwen had placed on the counter. “Now I can’t have you forgetting about this –”
╔═════ °• ♔ •° ═════╗
Miku’s was good. It always was. And yet Gwen was feeling quite the opposite as she sat at a quiet table in the back. Dread bubbled up in her stomach, the acid quickly burning through the sushi she had ordered, because she could no longer wait for Arthur to show up. She couldn’t believe she was getting stood up, his empty presence obvious across from her. Gwen didn’t mind eating alone, but being stood up, after promising not to lose her number and to actually see her, stung. She’d even texted him to see where he was, but to no avail. It was a shame, she’d really liked him, though Gwen normally didn’t let things like this get to her so much. So why had his absence pierce her heart? She didn’t have much time to think about that as she left, too focused on keeping her composure as she left the restaurant. But her chin-up, shoulders-back posture had deflated when she left the restaurant, and she began to walk to her car, not allowing her to have any hope in the approaching footsteps.
falsegds:
‘ not when the complaint is idiotic , jackson , ’ she informs the other , soft sigh leaving her lips as he continues with his antics . ‘ you really don’t have an off button , do you ? ’ and greta shakes her head . ‘ i feel like you and i would end up somewhere neither of us would want to be . ’
“no, and that off button will never be found if this coffee isn’t gonna work. otherwise, i’ll just be like one of those toys whose batteries aren’t full but refuse to die, making their noise boxes sound all creepy and everything. you don’t want that, do you?” he asked with a raised brow. “the only place we’ll end up is the bank; that genius needs to be shared with the world.”
stxrlghts:
“WELL, WITH AN ATTITUDE LIKE THIS…” Philip trails off, tone remaining light. “You just need practice. If you’re serious about it, that is.” He understands the need for coffee, he is a coffee drinker himself, but he needs it when he works an average of twelve hours a day. “I try to maintain a balance, honestly.” And if there’s anything Philip’s good at, it’s balance and self-control.
“it’s coffee, of course i’m serious about it.” jackson’s eyes looked serious at the challenge. he was always willing to better himself, because that meant he was closer to being the best. and hey, if he got better at increasing his caffeine effects, who knows what else he could do. “balance of what? how does it work?”
wcnderstrck:
“ HEY, CAN I ASK YOU SOMETHING ? ” it’s been a long time since he’s had a proper conversation with gwen, to the point where he’s not exactly sure where they stand together. but now they’re seated next to each other at the town pub, and it feels weirder to not acknowledge her than to ignore her ( which, for adrian, is saying something ) . plus, well, he does have a question. “ are your parents still on you about not letting you take over their company yourself ? ” yes, he still remembers some stuff about their FAKE relationship. @storywovens
gwen can just feel the annoyance growing within her the longer adrian sits beside her in silence. yes, she could say something, and yes, she should be over this drama that had ended years ago, but there was an anger and perhaps even a hurt that burrowed into her heart at the memory of adrian exposing the lies of their past relationship in some outburst without so much as even warning her. maybe she just never found closure. maybe she blames that for making her parents trust her even less with the future of the company. all she can really think as he asks her that question is ‘what the hell does he want?’ she turns to face him, giving him permission with a look. “yup,” gwen replies bitterly, though the bitterness is directed at her parents, not him. “i’m finally coming to believe that nothing i say will ever convince them otherwise. why?”
princelywriting:
“maybe? I’m fairly certain it’s supposed to be healthier though. black tea is supposed to have a decent amount of caffeine, I think.” truthfully, florence really had no clue what he was talking about. he drank both but he never really looked into the differences.
“i dunno, if i’m gonna go healthier with anything, i don’t think i can give up coffee, of all things,” jackson mused. clearly, the sugar addiction of the many flavors in coffee hooked him nearly as much as the caffeine one did. “the same as coffee though?” he asked skeptically.
xsomnias:
“Actually I think it’s the Turks who think they have the strongest ways to brew– something about not straining your beans and Kajmaks or I dunno to be honest.” animated shrugs of his shoulder underscore such talking out of his ass. “I personally think the blacker the coffee, the more awake I’ll feel–” he takes a quick sip. a slight burn still presents the coffee as unready to drink– it needs to cool off. “But sure, I think a young whipper snapper like you should live for awhile. Whatcha drinking so much coffee for anyways? You got an exam or something?” he assumes, that most of the town is in college– it’s all he ever runs into these days.
“that sounds complicated,” jackson replied with a furrowed brow, considering what todd just said. “but i wouldn’t be surprised. coffee can be a real science. i usually don’t question it - just give me the easiest and strongest kind and i’m set.” he took another sip, frowning at the fact that it was nearly empty. “exams, track practice, the weight of the world - you name it, i need coffee to get me through it. but yeah, i’ve got a big exam this week and need to get a jump start on studying.”
incandescentglcw:
“oh.” she says softly. she had thought she had taken care of gwen, but apparently, the woman liked to talk. “um, just make sure the dirt isn’t bone dry? it should be fine, really…”
“oh, good,” gwen replied with a relieved sigh. “i can do that, at least. thank you, really. i don’t know how often you get someone who’s this much of a novice, but i appreciate you answering my questions.”
penelopexrosen:
“We can always put that theory to the test.” A playful smile gracing her lips. “Is it being nice if it’s true? Don’t necessarily have to be anything. I’m not dressed up as anything in particular.”
“oh, you’re on,” jackson replied with a grin, unable to resist a challenge. “maybe, but i’m sure there’s someone waiting in the shadows to tell me how inaccurate my costume is for whatever the hell i’m supposed to be right now.”
dcylght:
After a not-so ladylike string a curses erupted from Fiona’s brain, she forced herself to giggle politely - trying to find the humor in the situation. In truth, despite Gwen being a bit younger than Fiona, she always seemed to feel the need to impress and fit in with the higher society of Woodvale that Gwen represented, “Does it now? Heh, I think I’m putting myself on a pause from drinking. What’ve you been having?”
gwen had spent the last few years branching out from her parents’ vision. if she was going to ever get ahead while they seem intent on keeping her stagnant, she would do it on her own terms. she wasn’t always infatuated with all the high society rules, anyway, and truly thought nothing of fiona’s burp. “hey, that’s your prerogative. i say celebrate however you want,” she replied with a smile. “oh, there’s this really good sangria stand over by the funnel cakes. i didn’t even know sangria could be considered fair food, but i’m not complaining.”
guardianofbears:
“I would’ve asked a friend if I could shower at their place if that ever happened,” She grimaces at the thought. “I’ve heard taking cold showers is better for your skin and hair or…something? But really, at what cost? The only time getting into cold water is nice is during the middle of the summer so…” She stops, realizing she’s made a point. “Well. Maybe jumping into a cold shower right now wouldn’t be so bad actually. And by the time it starts to get cold out again, you’ll have lost the immunity you’ve built up with coffee.”
“i usually shower kinda late, so it would be a little weird to knock on someone’s door so late just to ask for their shower,” jackson shrugged. he briefly wondered if fixing his sleep schedule would help this, but then pushed the thought aside. “exactly! i don’t care how good it is for you, i’m not doing that shit willingly.” jackson shook his head. “cold water is nice when it’s actually hot out right before you get in. if you’re going from an air conditioned bathroom to a cold shower, there’s no point, right? ... do you really think cold water will make me lose the immunity?”
