CELEBRATE DR. SEUSS’ BIRTHDAY AT THE LIBRARY!
Children from ages 2 to 92 in St. Tammany will join millions of their peers across the country to celebrate the annual National Education Association's (NEA) Read Across America Day on Thursday, March 2, 2017. NEA's Read Across America Day, which celebrates Dr. Seuss's birthday and the joys of reading, expects more than 45 million readers, both young and old, to pick up a book and read. There will be parties and festivities going on at most branches of the Library. Most programs will include cake unless noted. Please call the branch for details. Please inform the librarian of any food allergies at least one week in advance. We are happy to make accommodations.
Seussical celebrations begin a day early with a special storytime at Mandeville Branch (985-626-4293) on Wednesday, March 1 at 10:30 A.M. There will be more parties later in the afternoon on Wednesday, March 1 as Lee Road (985-893-6284) and South Slidell (985-781-0099) Branches will both host parties at 4:00 P.M. and Abita Springs Branch (985-893-6285) at 4:30 P.M. (and will serve Rice Krispy Treats instead of cake.) Festivities will include books, games, crafts and activities.
Thursday, March 2 is Dr. Seuss’ actual 113th birthday and there will be celebrations across the parish. Both Covington (985-893-6280) and Pearl River (985-863-5518) Branches’ parties are at 1:00 P.M. The goal of St. Tammany Parish Library’s Read Across America celebrations is to show children the joy of reading and build a nation of readers-on March 2nd and every day. As Dr. Seuss said himself, “"You're never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read with a child." Children ages 9 and under may not be left unattended at any St. Tammany Parish Library.

STORYWALK ® AT THE NORTHLAKE NATURE CENTER
Kids have half a day of school, the holiday break begins and Winter begins the next day! Perfect afternoon for a StoryWalk ® .
As families are striving to become more active, the library is taking books and storytime out of doors! The St. Tammany Parish Library is partnering with the Northlake Nature Center to encourage fitness, enjoyment of nature and literacy at the same time with a StoryWalk®. Developed by The Vermont Bicycle & Pedestrian Coalition, StoryWalk® is a fun, educational activity that places a children’s story (literally a book taken apart) along a popular walking route in the community. The event will be held at the Northlake Nature Center in Mandeville on Tuesday, December 20, between 12:00-3:00. Families can stop by anytime but should arrive by 2:30 to be able to enjoy the entire story. The StoryWalk® will take about a half hour to complete, but the afternoon could be stretched out longer as families enjoy the trails at the center. The featured book will be Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats. The story allows for a lot of fun participation. Families can expect to dance, hop and recreate other antics as they walk from page to page of the story. Check back for rain date in case of inclement weather.
