Changes from the Cat in the Hat trailers
We interrupt our editing schedule with an analysis of the Cat in the Hat movie trailers!
I noticed that no major animation channel on YT has analyzed the subtle but significant changes between trailers 1 and (3?). Let's call it trailer two for less confusion.
Meaning it's up to someone with a developing special interest to analyze it.
I noticed a ton of lighting changes and maybe even scene changes. The biggest one is the shot before the cat gets hit with pepper spray
Trailer 1 ver.
The cat has a more scrunched-up face, small pupils, slightly crooked teeth, and less crisp lighting with a warmer tone
Trailer 2 ver.
Cat now has bigger pupils, more emphasis on eyelashes, less crooked teeth, and the lighting is now crispier and cooler in tone
The second time I noticed the lighting changes was with the shot of all the things together
Trailer 1 ver.
The scene has warm lighting that's hitting the thing's hair and the boxes in an inconsistent manner, plus the lighting overall isn't crisp
Trailer 2 ver.
The lighting has a cooler tone, while the light from the window is hitting the objects and the box more consistently. Plus, the box looks properly lit in the shot
The lighting is also noticeable in this shot. You can notice this the most when the light is reflecting off Gabby's hair
Trailer 1 ver.
Trailer 2 ver.
The shot of the main hall of IIII is the most damning evidence of major changes from the first to the second trailer
Trailer 1 ver.
Trailer 2 Ver.
change in camera angle sofer colors and shadows more emphasis on Dr. Seuss-style architecture and 2 monitors with bibbles from that one Barbie movie
This shot arguably has the most drastic changes on a character-focused shot.
Sebastian shot from the first Cat in the Hat trailer. fish on the left side of the screen The lighting is warm and too saturated Eyelashes are less emphasized lack of teeth in Sebastian's mouth Facial expression isn't readable
Trailer 2 ver.
Sebastian shot from the second Cat in the Hat trailer. fish on the right side of the screen The lighting has a cool tone with proper saturation Eyelashes are emphasized Teeth in Sebastian's mouth Facial expression is readable
These slight changes carry over to the lobby scene
Trailer 1 ver.
Main lobby shot from the first Cat in the Hat 2026 trailer. cat has a white outline around its arm, and the model looks slightly off in quarter view. machine in the background has a saturated yellow color and toon shading
Trailer 2 ver.
Main lobby shot from the second Cat in the Hat trailer. Cat is not saying hi to pig in wig; no white outline around the cat; Overall shot feels less crowded; head looks less weird in quarter view; yellow machine has less saturated yellow; lighting in general feels more consistent and less saturated.
What does this mean for the movie? A lot of things actually (pun 100% intended)
1. The team needed that delay in hindsight to do a bit of housekeeping on scene comp, character acting, and especially lighting. This point ties back to the variety article about taking clear inspiration from Pixar's Soul
2. If the team is even willing to make some drastic scene changes between the 9 months, that means there's a slight chance that certain shots and sequences got changed or even outright removed, IYKYK
3. The team is passionate about the film looking the best it can be, and there's a clear love for The Cat in the Hat as a story, even if it's a different take
4. WB only said when the delay was first announced that they wanted to take advantage of the holiday season, yet the differences in visual quality paint a slightly different story.
Overall, everything from the visual composition to the lighting and even bits of dialogue feels like it got a massive upgrade. Honestly, I'm glad they got the delay, not just to save themselves from hoppers and GOAT, but also to dot their I's and cross their T's. We're reaching the finish line in 4 months. I can't wait to see this movie. Will reblog if I notice anything else.
