VIDEO: Living Under Israel’s Missiles
Four boys of the Bakr family were killed by a missile strike during last year’s incursion. Their surviving family members are still scarred from the attack.
More than anyone, children bear the brunt of regular Israeli military assaults on the Gaza Strip. During the 51-day war in the summer of 2014, 551 children were killed and 3,436 were injured. But these gruesome figures say little about the psychological state of the nearly 800,000 children who have survived the periodic bombing campaigns. After the final cease-fire that ended Israel’s Operation Protective Edge on August 26 of last year, UNICEF estimated that at least 425,000 Palestinian children in the besieged Gaza Strip require “immediate psychosocial and child protection support.”
[ The physical wounds of Gaza children might have healed, but they live with enduring psychological trauma ]

“If it comes down to Trump or Shillary, I’ll just abstain.” Yeah because low voter turnout really sticks it to the man. You know why Republicans keep winning things? Because they know voting is important. That’s why the current Republican primary turnout is shattering records. That’s why they go through all the trouble of suppressing voting rights for people unlikely to vote for them. And then you complain that politicians don’t care about you. The system doesn’t fall apart when you don’t vote, it just puts Republicans into power forever.
I’ve seen this episode multiple times and this is the part that makes me break down. Every single time.
Usually when I talk about Black-ish I joke that it’s giving away all our secrets. The little parts of our culture that makes us funny and unique. But this episode is thirty minutes of a very tough conversation that black Americans must have with their children, usually Jack and Diane’s age or younger. It highlights that we’ve been having this conversation for decades. It highlights that for all the progress we’ve made, the fundamental reality of being black in America has not changed.
The other thing about this moment that hits me is remembering where I was for Obama’s inauguration and the small glimmer of hope that slowly died over the years since. Me in January 2009 could never imagine the next few years: high-profile police brutality cases, militarized responses to peaceful protests, and domestic terrorism against black, brown, Native, and Muslim populations. I could never imagine a moment fraught with such fear, hope, elation, and love could hide such darkness and hatred.

This 11-year-old understands more about the importance of representation than all of the adults at Fox News combined.
