Destroy the idea that something has to be beautiful in order for it to mean something. Art won’t always be attractive, it might be violent, offensive, loud, lousy, silly, bizarre, obscene– but if it makes you feel something, doesn’t it deserve to be appreciated? There are no perfect words to capture the rawest of emotions, you won’t always be able to find the right things to say, sometimes brutal honesty is the best you can get, sometimes simple phrases are all you need, sometimes you won’t find flowers in prose but that doesn’t make it is any less important. Music does not have to be tame or calibrated to any one taste, it does not have to roll smoothly off the tip of the tongue, lyrics won’t always be easy to say, the message might be a tongue twister in itself, it doesn’t have to be music to your ears but it is music nonetheless. Abandon the notion that appeal is all you need in art. As human beings, take advantage of the ability for us to feel in all respects, to relate in every sense, to love without needing the art to love us back. There are too many feelings in this world and beauty is only able to call up so many of them.
