1. "Starting Over" is a Doo-Wop song, a style of music that definitely influenced John and Paul. While John talks about meeting Paul when John played "Be-bop-a-lula" for the first time, Paul always talks about "Come and Go with Me," by the Del Vikings, which is a doo-wop song.
2. John imitates Elvis and Buddy Holly, the two artists most influential for the pair of them, Elvis for his style, and Buddy for the fact that he wrote his own songs.
3. This isn't the first time they've written a song about running away together. "I Don't Know (Johnny, Johnny) was recorded in 1960, when Paul was 18, and John was 19. They recorded it, along with other songs, in Paul's house. Some of the lyrics are unintelligible, but one of Paul's lines is, to John, "well I've got you. Will you be my boy?" One of John's lines is, "well, I'll tell the fellas I'm travelling with you." If you've never heard it, it's on YouTube. Not only that, but Paul, and maybe George, would be the only one to remember it since it never was released.
4. Not sure how the song title was written out then, but the "I Don't Know (Johnny, Johnny)" matches " (Just Like) Starting Over."
5. "Like we did in the early days" references not only their trip to Paris for John's 21st, but their earlier trip to Caversham and their gig as the "Nerk Twins."
6. "Every day," which is the title of a Buddy Holly song about wanting love from a particular person, and contains the line, "come what may, do you ever long for true love from me?"
7. "We used to make it, love. Why can't we be making love, nice and easy." "Nice and Easy" is a song sung by Frank Sinatra, about taking your time in a romance, enjoying "all the stops along the way," and not rushing. It can be seen as a song both about romance in general and about a sexual encounter. They wrote a song, "Suicide," written in Frank's style, but he rejected it. Frank Sinatra at one time was the most famous male singer in the world.
8. John calls Paul "darling." Every single song, whether it's original or a cover, where one of them uses the word "darling," it's to the other.
9. It's like we both are fallin' in love again." Paul famously said "John is no longer in love with the three of us," which if you replace "us" with "me," it's John way of saying that he's still in love with Paul.
10. "It's time to spread our WINGS and fly. Don't let ANOTHER DAY go by, "MY LOVE." Wings, Paul's band, "Another Day," and "My Love," are Wing's songs. "Another Day" is about a person who is lonely until the man of her dreams comes. "Alone in apartment, she'd dwell,'Til the man of her dreams comes to break the spell." It's possible that Paul's song is about John and John is acknowledging that by saying Paul is the man of his dreams.
"My Love," could definitely be about both John and Linda, there is an emphasis on hands, and Paul always talks about how much he loved John's hands.
11. "My Love" uses the words, "hands," "understood [understand], and "woah, woah, woah," with a slight change to the tense of "understand," all those words are in "I Wanna Hold Your Hand."
12. It also contains the word "everywhere," and Paul wrote "Here, There, and Everywhere" to John.
13. On the same album as "I Don't Know (Johnny, Johnny) is a song called "Well, Darling."
14. This might be a stretch but "Be Bop a Lula," starts off with a "welll, Be Bop a Lula..." so it's like he's calling Paul his "Be Bop a Lula."
15. John's "look out" matches Paul's "look out" in Helter Skelter.
I'm sure there's more only I don't know enough about music to see if "Starting Over" musically relates to "I Don't Know (Johnny, Johnny).
There's an interview where Yoko the tinkling bells wish bells and they relate to getting your wish. Only two of John's song have those bells. "Starting Over," and "Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy)"
And as I recently learned, apparently when John died, Paul locked himself in his studio listening to "Starting Over" for hours.
