Chainsmoker Cat sounds like an animanga a hacky comedian would make up, but itl’s weirdly compelling. At its best It comes off like Fleabag with cat ears, and is a good entry in the “women being foul” micro-genre.

CC gets praised for showing the messy truth of addiction, which is still effective when filtered through gags, but past the first episode it's selling itself more as a general comedy, not just Yani’s story…whatever it is. I don’t need a feel-good story about overcoming the odds but so far she’s still the most interesting character so it’s not as fun when she’s out of focus.

And I have a pretty juvenile sense of humor—just with post-laugh embarrassment—so I’m fine with most of it except the tired “female character accidentally gives surrounding men a boner" and “pervert mangaka” bits.

I also wasn’t expecting a Fantasy Oppression narrative around catgirls, but I’ll be six feet under before I hate Fantasy Oppression narratives on sight.

If Chainsmoker Cat ends with Yakuko marrying a man I'd be turbo surprised like that girl doesn't come across as straight at all she comes across as a lesbian to me

The way Yani Neko deals with addiction is actually really good. Surprising for an anime and a little triggering at times, but it's realistic. Hate to be so "literally me" about this show, though, of all shows...
