it's not a news coo which brings the delivery, but a rather large, crimson-hued hawk; a sort of tabard is tied across its body as it flies, bearing the jolly roger of the carmine pirates—as good as any sign that might say " luffy don't eat. " the bird, zuly's companion riso'pia, comes to rest upon the taffrail of the sunny after dropping off the two large baskets it'd been carrying in its talons : on one, a tag also bearing the carmine pirates' jolly roger, and the other—
a toothy skull with three red stripes across its left eye.
in the basket from jackdaw's crew, there's an assortment of gifts, all wrapped neatly by hauru's precise handiwork : a set of two thin leather armbands with a flame pattern carved into them, a symbol of both the straw hat's brothers that he could carry with him, crafted by zuly—a songbook, filled with shanties both collected or written by uta—two sets of pictures from jackdaw, of him, uta, and luffy as children and again meeting as fellow pirates on the seas—and finally, a small mechanical bunny which could seemingly hop around on its own, even releasing miniature colorful fireworks in celebration, with a special note hidden behind a panel conspicuously marked with a little monkey face.
in the basket from the red hair pirates, the gifts are filled with the spirit of celebration, even if the lot had not seen luffy in 12 years time—food able to travel the long distance to the sunny, juice and booze (did luffy drink yet? the older crew wasn't sure, but at least were certain he'd share with his own), some various treasures they'd found on their own adventures and thought he might like—there's even a book of recipes from roux, meant more for sanji, but filled with things that not only had he made for luffy back in fūsha village, but makino had, too. finally, there's a packet of seeds attached to a letter, argentí's tidy scrawl present upon the page; filled with well-wishes and rewritten words scribbled out after teardrops clearly blurred some of the writing, there's deep affection for the young captain present in each line. the letter explains the seeds contain sunflower seeds, not to eat but to plant, because they felt the thousand sunny needed a flower as sunny as captain who commanded it. at the end of the page, there's a small doodle of a bird signing off, followed by a doodle of a lion—and signed with a differently written ' s '. even without additional words, without breaking the promise the two had made 12 years ago, the single letter is more than enough to say the same as usagi's secret note :
The first sighting of Riso'pia's unique coloration and decoration goes to Usopp who hollers from the crow's nest about incoming mail. It doesn't take long for the crew to gather on deck and Luffy approaches quickly, grin widening as he sees the sigil of the Carmine Pirates and the two large baskets that are being dropped off. He snickers to himself, head tipping back and laughing and then bounces over, first scritching beneath the bird's next before he scoops up the baskets, soon replaced by Zoro who offers Riso'pia his shoulder to watch vigil from and a treat from a pouch he's retrieved.
With his crew around him, Luffy settles in the centre of the deck, legs folded beneath him on the grass as he takes in the sight of the two jolly rogers before him. For a moment, there's something distant about his smile, a view to a place further afield, a different time, before he immediately begins to filter through the baskets, starting with the Carmine Pirates. Immediately he is full of chatter holding things up with sheer joy - "Hey Zoro, look what Zuly made!" and "Brook!! You have to play these, I want to hear every single one tonight!" The leather bands are then added to his arm, the songbook handed off to Brook so he can begin studying the notes.
The photos are then pulled free and he begins to laugh once more, remembering when the one of them as children was taken, a collective mission to steal the hat that sits atop his head now, their toothy grins and expressive faces a mark of their victory. He brandishes it around to his crew, sharing it with them all, Nami cooing immediately at how cute Jackdaw looks - to which Luffy points out he has a booger hanging from his nose - while Robin smiles at the sight of history in motion. These are returned to the basket to be stuck up in his sleeping area later, where he can remember the fun of days past and the adventures to come.
The final present from the basket comes with a sense of wonder, and after a quick consult with Franky and Usopp on movement, he sets it off to hop around him, head tipped to the side as he looks to the face studiously. A shake of the head brings him back to the moment and he beams proudly watching the rabbit bounce around. "Usagi is so talented!! Look at the rabbit go!" He claps as the fireworks burst and is content sitting there for a while watching before he turns to the second basket.
There's a sense of warmth in his chest as he raises the basket bearing the Red Hair Pirates jolly roger, the sign of them familiar and warm. The family who chose him, some might say, and his lower lip wobbles a fraction before he sees the juice and booze and snacks. "We're going to eat well tonight!" he cheers, spreading it out on the grass before grabbing at the cookbook and opening it up. His eyes widen at the sight of Roux and Makino's recipes, mouth watering at the thought of tasting those meals once more and all but thrusts it in Sanji's hands with a wide smile. "You can make it all, right Sanji? Makino and Roux make amazing food, you'll love their style!"
He's more subdued as he picks up Argentí's letter and takes in every word, holding the seeds carefully in hand, a half pout on his face at the idea of not being able to eat them. A soft huffed laugh escapes his lips at the sight of teardrops on the page. "Heh, still a crybaby!" he murmurs fondly, and yet slowly his head tips forward and the straw hat shades his expression from view. It's the doodles that get him in the end, the bird and the lion, the single letter that greets him while maintaining their promise.
"I'm gonna beat you, become King of the Pirates, and then you can make up for every birthday you missed." He laughs to himself as he tips his head back to make his vow to the sky, trusting the wind to carry his words to the one they are for. The tears at his waterline dance in the sunlight as he throws his head back further until he almost loses balance and laughs, feeling so loved. It is only when the laughter subsides, that he lowers his head down, turning back to watch his bouncing bunny as Nami crosses to Zoro and offers Riso'pia a letter to take for her back home while the rest of the crew watch on as their captain revels in his gifts.
What a birthday it has shaped up to be, the best one so far.
