like most high schools in japan, the students themselves were occasionally tasked with the duty of aiding the janitorial staff in keeping the campus clean. takiko was no exception to these rules; she`d even gone as far as to volunteer herself to sweeping the fallen leaves before she set off to her extracurriculars. with a rake in hand, the former priestess found the action of bending forward and back to collect the leaves to be rather therapeutic. she never paused to actually think about the implications these leaves held, nor did she think it odd how the foliage of gold and orange and every warm color in the spectrum clung onto branches with dear life. the seasons passed by slowly in tancho, a blessing she surely counted subconsciously; there was no need to worry about an impending ice age outside the world of the book.
almost as if on cue, the man lounging a few feet above and away exhaled a sigh, a low whisper in the air that prompted takiko out of her trance-like state. after straightening her posture, she heard the man call out from a direction towards her right, near the pile of perished leaves she`d gathered within the past fifteen minutes or so. a moment`s hesitance was due to the young girl studying the man`s most prominently feline features. was he one of those cosplayers that she`d heard about? even the girl from tokyo thought these trends were rather strange, but perhaps tokyo had a plethora of cosplayers and trendsetters roaming the streets now. she wouldn`t know; it`d been a while since she visited home.
her eyes, alight with curiosity at the mention of his book, immediately drifted towards the ground below him. setting the handle of her rake aside, she closed the distance between herself and the tree, eyes never leaving the area underneath.
“ah—do you know where it may have fallen?” takiko asked, her soft tone hinting towards a prim and proper upbringing. bending at the knees, she casted another glance around the perimeter. with all these leaves in the way, finding where his book was proved to be a challenge—
and there it lay quietly, in a bed of autumnal pigments, a pedestal of its own. her hands quickly, but gently, shot out to grab the tome, the pads of her fingers feeling its hard binding. takiko could feel her heart skip a beat. nervously glancing away from its cover, she turned her face heavenward.
“is this the book you`re looking for, sir?”
Cheshire was quite glad that he had come across someone willing to help him, a complete and possibly suspicious person. How often did you see someone hanging upside down from a tree? He wasn't bashing on himself of course, but there was nothing wrong with being a little bit wary of strangers. But, he was probably judging books by their covers and this young girl probably knew how to handle herself very well; he had met a few woman that were not to be taken lightly. He watched as she looked around for his book despite all the leaves getting in her way. He'd have to say more than 'thank you' to repay her back for this especially since he stopped her in the middle of doing her previous task.
"Yes, that's it." He confirmed her find in a cheerful manner, glad that it didn't take too long. Being upside down like this was suffering. "I'll get it in just a moment." With that, the older flipped himself up right, and slid off the branch and onto the ground. He straightened the wrinkles that had formed on his clothes, having long ago been taught that one should always look their best no matter the type occasion they found themselves in.
The male turned on his heel, long strides quickly and easily closing the distance between him and the child. The way she acted was different from most children that he knew, annoying little things that constantly hit their ball over the fence and shouted rude words at most adults. Whether they were orphans or not was something that he didn't care about, seeing as though they would probably lack proper manners anyway. Most kids on street did after all. It was quite obvious that the girl in front of him had a proper upbringing much to his satisfaction. Cheshire couldn't deal with rude children for very long, that's the reason why he didn't take a job as a teacher.
Pale digits gently grasped the novel out of the girl's hand, fingers brushing any dirt that might have accumulated on either side. "Thank you very much, little miss." A grateful smile formed on the taller's face and he bowed slightly, more of a habit than anything. "Now then, who do I have the pleasure of addressing?"

Why didn’t anyone know how to have real fun, it was boring just to learn in the school when people could just gain guns and shoot at their hearts content. If only Tweedle Dee and Dum were here, they’d know how to have fun. The twins never failed when it came to those type of games, not even afraid of the fact if they died. Besides, Alice always grew upset when they played around like that. Majority of the time, they tried playing it somewhere she wasn’t going to be. Next, he had nothing to chase around here. That one mouse Pierce wasn’t even around and with no dinner running around always made a feline unhappy. All he had was his boa, and that item didn’t even speak with him so that was a waste but it really did bring out his appearance.
But maybe he could be lucky and search for that sneaky rodent, he always hid in the most awkward placed so he could possibly be outside. High off coffee and trying his best not to sleep. If Boris could catch him just this once, asleep somewhere, he would be satisfied. Exiting out the doors and ready to place his hands on the ground to begin his adventure, amber hues had noticed one of those real mouses crawling about.
Well, he could postpone Pierce just this once. Jumping it’s general direction, hands first and the small animal dodged the male’s attacks. A frown growing on his features as he couldn’t believe what just happened to him. That wasn’t appropriate.
Shaking his head and his tail flicking, showing the irritation that came from him was where he began following the mouse on his feet, now creeping through the bushes wasn’t what he needed to do at the moment. But seeing that the mouse went someone he couldn’t get to by walking, he thus decided to get on his hands and knees to make way through a few bushes. It was his only choice but as he got to the other side, he was bamboozled. Distraught even. Where the hell did it go? “I’m too confounded to describe the amount of how could this happen to me right now.” He was hungry, and all he could stare at was some droppings that the small animal left as a present.
Though his attention was broken as he heard someone speak from afar, the male raised to his feet and crossed his arms at what was left for him. That wasn’t even funny. But whatever. He wasn’t going to complain. Well yes he was, but not right now as he had stumbled upon a book. So was that what had failed a few minutes back? Now books were raining from the sky? Great. This school was becoming more and more wei—.
“I seem to have dropped my book, do you mind getting it for me?”
Well. Turning his vision to see where that had came from was he greeted by another person. A short wave given as he took effort to pick up the book on the ground, not even giving it to the brunette. “Is this what ya want?” Oh now he was gunna start something, why did he have to be like this. “Finders keepers, losers weepers.“
Here he though that help was on its way, and he would have gotten his book back easily without any trouble. The world liked to prove him wrong it seemed, already having done so on many occasions. From his upside down position (why was he still like that?) he examined the person as best he could. Yes, that was a half-skirt and extremely fluffy boa he was seeing. His nose picked up a scent that wasn't quite human, and the matching ear-tail set confirmed his suspicion. He was dealing with another feline, how wonderful. His mind was still processing if whether or not that was actually a good thing. One thing was for certain, it wasn't starting off that well.
From Cheshire's own experience, young toms were much too old to be considered adorable little kittens, and too young to be fully matured. They often got into needless tussles and whatnot, he did too once upon a time, before someone had the heart to take him in. He forced himself out of that train of thought, not wanting to stir up past regrets, even though he knew full well that they wouldn't haunt him here.
"Now, now." He began softly in hopes of compromising. "You don't have to be like that. I'm halfway through the book, and I'd like very much to see how it ends." Though he said it, Cheshire had some doubts that it would do much to get his hostage item back. But it was the truth, and he really didn't like stopping a book halfway through. It usually left him wondering about what happened, and even if the book wasn't the best one that he had ever read, he'd still like to see it through to the end. She happened to be a big reader, and taught him that herself; it'd be a shame for her teachings to be for naught.
The brunet blinked and the small bit of movement made him realize that it would be best to shift the way he was with all the blood rushing to his head. That, and it would be much easier to talk to someone when sitting right side up. The older held up a finger, signalling the boy to wait just a minute. He swung his body a few times to gain momentum, before heaving his body upwards and gripping onto the branch to keep from falling. More moving was involved before he found himself comfortably laying stomach down on the branch, and looking down at the younger.
"Now, as I was saying." He started up again, flipping a lock of hair over his shoulder. Having this much hair was troublesome sometimes, plus it was on the ground dragging on the ground before this, so that was enough for him to have a need to wash it. It was hard maintaining this much hair and keeping it gorgeous, it was hard and practically no one understood. Not even the women, because they always said how much they loved it as the ran their fingers through it, something he was not very fond of, especially if they were strangers. Oh, he was getting off track now.
"If I don't get that book back, Miss Caterpillar will be very upset with me." That was big lie if he had ever told one. That book didn't belong to the Wonderland Library, and was actually one he had gotten out of the mansion he was staying at before coming here. But, the child below didn't know that, so there would be no trouble telling a lie like that one. He just wanted the book back.

Cheshire had decided that Tancho wasn’t so bad, though it wasn’t any Wonderland, he could deal with that. Then again, it was getting pretty ruthless there seeing as though the game was reaching its climax. The cat just wanted to rest now, getting involved with the 89th Alice was fun, but it was causing too much of an emotional and physical toll for simple stray like him. The school seemed like a good place to reside, especially since he didn’t have to teach children. That was a funny thought, Cheshire teaching kids, he wasn’t even that found of them. Now kittens, kittens he could deal with, but there were none of those. Being a groundskeeper didn’t seem so hard; he could probably lounge around all day anyway.
Speaking of that job, he probably should get good bearings of the school, it seemed kind of big. But it was midday, and the cat had yet to have some sort of evening rest. This just wouldn’t do for someone like him. It seemed like a good idea to go to his teacher dorm and rest there, but he wasn’t so much of inside cat. That and he had no idea where he was supposed to stay. What kind of place didn’t give out maps for the newly arrived?
The young man scratched his head and looked around, before returning his hands to his pocket. There was a nice tree not too far away; maybe he could rest in that. Cheshire walked up to his wanted perch, placing a hand on the trunk once he was close enough. Yes, this was a nice tree, his tree now. A small humming escaped him as he climbed up it with ease, having done this hundreds of times in the past. There was a branch sturdy enough to support him not too far off the ground, well to him anyway; he was almost six feet after all. It didn’t take long for him to get comfortable, and he pulled a small book out of his pocket. Just because he was a cat, didn’t mean he was illiterate, he just didn’t read that often. But before he could open the small novel, it fell out his hand.
The male pouted, and his ears flattened against his head as he stared at his item on the ground. Cheshire let out a small sigh, adjusting his body so he was now hanging upside down by his knees. Even like that, he could just barely reach it. He stayed like that for a few seconds, upset look on his face. He just was about to give up when his ears picked up the sound of footsteps.
“Ah, hello there!” he greeted the person approaching, not bothering to right himself. “I seem to have dropped my book, do you mind getting it for me?”
WHAT IS YOUR EARLIEST HUMAN MEMORY?
"I'm sorry, I think you have the wrong person. I'm just a cat after all. You'll have better luck asking someone else."
