Shit. Shit shit shit shit shit shit. Can’t anyone have a decent, quiet meal without someone popping up out of nowhere? First world cannibal problems. Grayson can’t help wishing he lived in the Fore Tribe of Papua New Guinea where cannibalism was normal. Imagine not having to look over his shoulder like a white guy telling a racist joke every time he wanted to chow down. Damn it damn it damn it.
Well, at least she dropped her weapon. Fear is a wonderful emotion. It keeps people from striking now and asking questions later. Maybe now he can try to calm her down a little. He wipes his mouth on his sleeve, noting the slimy cerebrospinal fluid and gray matter on his sleeve—that probably wasn’t too pretty to see—and stands up with his hands up in a nonthreatening manner.
“Hey, hey. Shhhh. Don’t scream and don’t run. I swear I didn’t do this. He was dead before I got to him.”
That doesn’t sound that much better, but at least he got out that he didn’t kill the man. That’s usually the first problem people like to address. The second, which Grayson was about to address, was why the hell he was eating them.
“This is awkward, huh? Um… I suppose I should tell you why I’m… well, eating him then. I don’t really have a good excuse or anything, so I guess I’ll just tell you the truth.”
He takes a deep breath, then continues:
“I’m what scientists would technically consider a zombie. Basically, long story short, I have these messed up proteins called prions bouncing around in my brain, and they make me crave human flesh. Zombie Spongiform Encephalopathy, they call it. It’s like Mad Cow Disease or Kuru. But hey, don’t worry. I’m not planning on terrorizing the school or anything. In fact, I’m not planning on eating anyone from the school at all. Only pork and a few anonymous… hit and run victims…”
as nonthreatening as he tried to seem, the priestess still managed to fall backwards out of reflex as he stood up, completely ignoring the immediate pain of the impact between concrete and tailbone. jaw slackened open, takiko raised her arms in a defensive position in case at any point he decided to break his speech and lunge at her, although he was trying his hardest to appear logical, the opposite of his earlier cannibalistic display.
gray eyes darkened with fear glanced quickly towards the corpse sprawled at his feet once it was mentioned, fixating upon the organs of which were proudly upon display for a mere few seconds before focusing back upon his whole figure. yes, as long as she could note his entire body and his posture, she wouldn`t be in any danger of a counterattack—
but the smell, oh god, the smell! it was nauseating, his words were nauseating, this entire situation was nauseating. her head or the world—one of them or both felt as if they were spinning out of control, her consciousness being in danger of slipping away, slowly, ever so slowly—
in the midst of his explanation involving prions and the like, the priestess fell completely to the ground. no fever was involved this time, just pure shock. her consciousness, possibly out of a defense mechanism if anything, was gone for a few minutes, leaving her completely vulnerable.
don't read books in trees // open
Cheshire was quite glad that he had come across someone willing to help him, a complete and possibly suspicious person. How often did you see someone hanging upside down from a tree? He wasn’t bashing on himself of course, but there was nothing wrong with being a little bit wary of strangers. But, he was probably judging books by their covers and this young girl probably knew how to handle herself very well; he had met a few woman that were not to be taken lightly. He watched as she looked around for his book despite all the leaves getting in her way. He’d have to say more than ‘thank you’ to repay her back for this especially since he stopped her in the middle of doing her previous task.
“Yes, that’s it.” He confirmed her find in a cheerful manner, glad that it didn’t take too long. Being upside down like this was suffering. “I’ll get it in just a moment.” With that, the older flipped himself up right, and slid off the branch and onto the ground. He straightened the wrinkles that had formed on his clothes, having long ago been taught that one should always look their best no matter the type occasion they found themselves in.
The male turned on his heel, long strides quickly and easily closing the distance between him and the child. The way she acted was different from most children that he knew, annoying little things that constantly hit their ball over the fence and shouted rude words at most adults. Whether they were orphans or not was something that he didn’t care about, seeing as though they would probably lack proper manners anyway. Most kids on street did after all. It was quite obvious that the girl in front of him had a proper upbringing much to his satisfaction. Cheshire couldn’t deal with rude children for very long, that’s the reason why he didn’t take a job as a teacher.
Pale digits gently grasped the novel out of the girl’s hand, fingers brushing any dirt that might have accumulated on either side. “Thank you very much, little miss.” A grateful smile formed on the taller’s face and he bowed slightly, more of a habit than anything. “Now then, who do I have the pleasure of addressing?”
an appreciative "ah" escaped her lips as her jaw slackened, watching the man`s athleticism be put on display. it seemed that she was surrounded by rather strong people, and, while the feline-esque man wasn`t, say, turning into a woman or summoning gusts of wind at will, he obviously possessed a prowess unlike the regular citizen. that was... if you could even call him human. and his height! now that he was out of the tree and stood right before her, takiko became self-conscious with the amount she had to crane her neck just to look up at his beaming face. within those few moments she made a few quick judgments about this fellow; his age, the deduction that he was probably a staff member as opposed to being a student, and the fact that those ears—they were definitely connected to the top of his head.
takiko still didn`t know what to make of him as a person when he gently removed the tome from her fingers, slipping it back into his possession. it was then that her eyes, a clear, sparkling shade of obsidian, broke its gaze upon the man`s face, now focusing on the book she`d retrieved. the book itself looked nothing special, with its hard binding and golden print upon its covers. still, books were a bit of a strange subject for her, and the very sight of its binding triggered an array of memories as she listened to the man speak with a voice deeper than most; he was definitely not a boy.
"ah—what i did really doesn`t merit much praise, sir!" she replied once she heard the finality in his tone, tilting her head back towards his face. "my name is takiko. okuda takiko, of the senior class."

One of the worst parts of eating raw pork is the lack of a fresh brain. It’s all frozen crap brains that have basically all collapsed in on themselves over time. It’s definitely not as good as raw. And Grayson’s having a major craving for 100% real gray matter.
The only thing is he promised himself he wouldn’t eat students or faculty. Sure, he still won’t feel remorse for the person when he finishes them off, but he’s not about to run the risk of getting caught. Not after all this time he’s been here, safe and sound.
He tries to distract himself with a little music, but that doesn’t work at all. The very first song to come up on his iPod is BRAINS! by Voltaire, a song that’s literally about eating brains. Sure, it’s funny and kinda relatable, but it’s probably the worst song to listen to when the prions in your brain are screaming for neurons.
BRAINS, BRAINS, I won’t lie, I’ll eat their brains ‘til they’re zombified. Sure they might think it’s deranged But they won’t give it a thought After I’ve eaten they’re brain. BRAINS, BRAINS, It’s okay. It’s not a matter if it isn’t gray, And if at first they think it’s strange, they won’t think twice If they don’t have a brain!

so far, takiko had no reason to break her listless state as she fulfilled each duty expected of a good student. it was only during her extracurriculars did she ever feel alive, especially when, much to her delight, the martial arts club had subdivisions for weapon training. gripping the finely crafted handle of a naginata brought a rush of adrenaline unbecoming of a woman of whom supposedly was an exemplary model of a traditional japanese girl. the normally docile (at least in public) girl was a beast in a match, and yet another student before her fell with a resounding thump on the wooden floor.
she hid her smug expression behind the sleeve of her uniform before reaching out to help her opponent back up. even with her pride, it was unbecoming to gloat in someone else`s loss, no matter how much pleasure she derived from their misfortune. both herself and her opponent bent down at the waist, giving respects to each other as club activities came to a close, with her competitive nature ending with it.
with naginata still in hand, the dark haired girl exited the building and was just about to head to her dorm when the ungodly sound of screeching tires and burnt rubber filled the air. alarmed by the after effects of an accident a few yards away, the former priestess rushed towards the source. admittedly, she didn`t think much about her actions, but if there was danger, there had to be someone hurt—
and oh how right she was. she arrived just at the right moment to see a boy—another student—drag a body off into an alleyway. that would have been the end of that if takiko wasn`t the type to be thorough, and the innate desire to offer help and be useful pushed her to approach the pair.
nothing could have prepared her for what she`d see next.
return of spring;
He appraised her with a glance halfway between lukewarm and imperceptibly darker, magnetized, dropping his lead-weight arm to his side. She’d quickly curled her fingers into the heart of her palm, gathering whatever self-restraint she contained and holding it close, as if she’d revealed a side of her only meant for one single person who mattered to her more than anyone else. Whoever she was looking for was someone that meant something inexplicably dear to her, a person she missed so terribly that all the politeness and tentative smiles couldn’t mask that underlying hurt that saturated the lilt of her words, sang in her eyes.
“You don’t need to apologize, you know. I get it.” he tells her, mouth thinned to a line. There’s an undercurrent of something more that he wants to tack on like an afterthought, that missing someone never really goes away, but it becomes more bearable with the endless lapse of time. She probably understands that, though; and Roxas is back to ducking his head away slightly when she momentarily flushes and flusters away the rest of his reassurances. The girl is actually rather .. quaint, and it’s kinda’ funny when he considers how a girl like her ended up in a place like Tancho. Maybe she went there searching for that person that lives perpetually on the tip of her tongue, but he can’t find it himself to pry any further.
“No, it’s fine. See?” Roxas gestures to the sweater with an arched eyebrow, a grin lifting the corners of his mouth upwards. “No worse for the wear.” Besides that, she seems a little preoccupied by everything else, distracted in contemplation that collect like listless birds for people who have too many thoughts, but it’s with a lackadaisical nod that he stretches his hand out to her this time. “I’m Roxas. Are you new here, by any chance? I could show you around the campus, if you’ve got the time to spare.”
again, he managed to catch her off guard simply by being present and acting as all boys do. the corners of her lips fell from her smile not out of any negative emotion, but due to her not being accustomed to more modern approaches of introductions. takiko easily came off as rather conservative, and her very mannerisms were an echo from an era decades ago. of course, she was not ignorant of the implications held within his outstretched hand. it was a gesture made as a greeting—she`d seen others with a more westernized upbringing shake hands before. mentally shaking herself out of her stupor, a much more genuine smile spread across her lips. rough first impressions aside, perhaps roxas could become a friend!
slipping her hand into his in a gentle grasp, takiko shook his hand as she gave her reply. "ah—well, truth be told, you can say i`ve been here for a while." she noted how warm his hand felt, possibly resulting in a lingering handshake before she relinquished her grip and let her hand fall to her side. "but i haven`t really explored the grounds... at all."
why was that, she wondered silently. it wasn`t the most wisest decision on her part, since it resulted in her roaming the rather large campus until she found her destination by chance sometimes. thankfully, she didn`t have anywhere to go for today, but she was still drifting about with no place in need or mind. in a moment of self-realization, takiko silently scolded herself. it wasn`t good to be too absent-minded.
"it really is a pleasure to meet you, though! my name is takiko."
there were a few questions in mind about roxas himself, but she decided to save them for a time offering a smoother transition into the subject.
don't read books in trees // open
Cheshire had decided that Tancho wasn’t so bad, though it wasn’t any Wonderland, he could deal with that. Then again, it was getting pretty ruthless there seeing as though the game was reaching its climax. The cat just wanted to rest now, getting involved with the 89th Alice was fun, but it was causing too much of an emotional and physical toll for simple stray like him. The school seemed like a good place to reside, especially since he didn’t have to teach children. That was a funny thought, Cheshire teaching kids, he wasn’t even that found of them. Now kittens, kittens he could deal with, but there were none of those. Being a groundskeeper didn’t seem so hard; he could probably lounge around all day anyway.
Speaking of that job, he probably should get good bearings of the school, it seemed kind of big. But it was midday, and the cat had yet to have some sort of evening rest. This just wouldn’t do for someone like him. It seemed like a good idea to go to his teacher dorm and rest there, but he wasn’t so much of inside cat. That and he had no idea where he was supposed to stay. What kind of place didn’t give out maps for the newly arrived?
The young man scratched his head and looked around, before returning his hands to his pocket. There was a nice tree not too far away; maybe he could rest in that. Cheshire walked up to his wanted perch, placing a hand on the trunk once he was close enough. Yes, this was a nice tree, his tree now. A small humming escaped him as he climbed up it with ease, having done this hundreds of times in the past. There was a branch sturdy enough to support him not too far off the ground, well to him anyway; he was almost six feet after all. It didn’t take long for him to get comfortable, and he pulled a small book out of his pocket. Just because he was a cat, didn’t mean he was illiterate, he just didn’t read that often. But before he could open the small novel, it fell out his hand.
The male pouted, and his ears flattened against his head as he stared at his item on the ground. Cheshire let out a small sigh, adjusting his body so he was now hanging upside down by his knees. Even like that, he could just barely reach it. He stayed like that for a few seconds, upset look on his face. He just was about to give up when his ears picked up the sound of footsteps.
“Ah, hello there!” he greeted the person approaching, not bothering to right himself. “I seem to have dropped my book, do you mind getting it for me?”
like most high schools in japan, the students themselves were occasionally tasked with the duty of aiding the janitorial staff in keeping the campus clean. takiko was no exception to these rules; she`d even gone as far as to volunteer herself to sweeping the fallen leaves before she set off to her extracurriculars. with a rake in hand, the former priestess found the action of bending forward and back to collect the leaves to be rather therapeutic. she never paused to actually think about the implications these leaves held, nor did she think it odd how the foliage of gold and orange and every warm color in the spectrum clung onto branches with dear life. the seasons passed by slowly in tancho, a blessing she surely counted subconsciously; there was no need to worry about an impending ice age outside the world of the book.
almost as if on cue, the man lounging a few feet above and away exhaled a sigh, a low whisper in the air that prompted takiko out of her trance-like state. after straightening her posture, she heard the man call out from a direction towards her right, near the pile of perished leaves she`d gathered within the past fifteen minutes or so. a moment`s hesitance was due to the young girl studying the man`s most prominently feline features. was he one of those cosplayers that she`d heard about? even the girl from tokyo thought these trends were rather strange, but perhaps tokyo had a plethora of cosplayers and trendsetters roaming the streets now. she wouldn`t know; it`d been a while since she visited home.
her eyes, alight with curiosity at the mention of his book, immediately drifted towards the ground below him. setting the handle of her rake aside, she closed the distance between herself and the tree, eyes never leaving the area underneath.
"ah—do you know where it may have fallen?" takiko asked, her soft tone hinting towards a prim and proper upbringing. bending at the knees, she casted another glance around the perimeter. with all these leaves in the way, finding where his book was proved to be a challenge—
and there it lay quietly, in a bed of autumnal pigments, a pedestal of its own. her hands quickly, but gently, shot out to grab the tome, the pads of her fingers feeling its hard binding. takiko could feel her heart skip a beat. nervously glancing away from its cover, she turned her face heavenward.
"is this the book you`re looking for, sir?"
return of spring;
Nowadays, it’s not as if Roxas has anything better to do than loiter around the campus with his feet barely sticking to the ground and stuff his hands in his pockets, kicking at every stray pebble just because he can.
No Sora, no Organization XIII, no absence or influx of heartrending emotions in decay, just a boy achieving catharsis through stomping the bits and ends of would-be rocks under the soles of his shoes. He’s got classes to attend to, extracurriculars with strict schedules and tip-top deadlines, but in retrospect, it’s difficult to see how those play into the bigger portion of his destiny known as the rest of his life. Nothing lasts forever, and the sooner he gets himself sorted out, the better. He’s always been one for the kind of navel-gazing introspection that zones people out from their entire body, so when he’s abruptly pulled back into reality, Roxas is a bit slow on the uptake.
“Eh?” he mumbles faintly, staring back at the girl with her hand wrapped around the fabric of his torso like she’s got a decade-long vengeance to wreak havoc down on it, which is nice and all, but not exactly appreciated. It takes a moment for him to understand the glossy quality of her eyes, bone-deep bewilderment and disappointment and complete loss, thick and cloying —
And then he pulls away fast, straightening out the rumpled folds and coaxing his features into stupefied neutrality. Roxas glances down at her still-outstretched hand, palms the nape of his neck and glances sideways, meditative for a moment. “It’s okay. Everyone makes mistakes.” He hopes the residual empathy makes its way partway, at least; he’s had enough of his own dealings with mix-matching identities that he isn’t about to go opening that can of worms again. “Who’d you say you were looking for?” .. Well, maybe he’ll compromise and bend the lid instead.
with the shock of fair hair wavering in the wind, it was easy to see where takiko had made her mistake. a boy no older than the warrior of whom swore his life to protect her stood a mere few inches away, thanks to her intrusion, although he pulled himself away just as quickly as she reached out. her own reflexes, however, were much slower. her fingers, now absent of the fabric she clung on to as if her life depended on it, were floating in a stasis, quickly losing warmth in the cold, winter air. a quick glance into the dark haired woman`s gray eyes revealed utter disappointment, pain—could her eyes really reflect how completely shattered she felt?
ah, but it was rude to stare. fingers curling into a gentle fist, takiko retracted her hand back to her chest. the full extent of her actions registered suddenly, and her cheeks became flushed with a rosey tint; a striking blush compared to her pale complexion. she did her best to bring her expression back to something lighter, more flamboyant. after all, who wanted to deal with someone like her of all people? certainly not this boy, especially with how uncomfortable he must have been as his body language suggested.
"no one," she responded with a quick smile. "like i said, i was mistaken! please excuse my manners." there was no use in even explaining the manner of a man she was secretly searching for with each gust of the wind. she was in hokkan no longer. uruki was just a character in a book now. "is your uniform alright? i hope i did not ruin it," she continued, her tone formal.
return of spring;
somehow, with some sort of divine blessing, takiko found herself standing alive on foreign ground.
everything was strange and new, from the westernized uniform straight to the school she now stood within. takiko couldn`t exactly feel quite acclimated to her current situation, and who could really blame her? after being transported to the world similar to ancient china and going through her adventures as the priestess of genbu, being back in a world full of normalcy was... strange. okuda takiko, a spirited girl from tokyo, was no longer regarded as someone to protect or fear. she was back to being an average girl finishing her last year of high school.
and she was okay with this. she was alright with drifting from class to class, living on as all girls do. echoes of words once spoken occasionally came back to memory; she had promised to continue on living, even if she were worlds apart from her friends, from him. with each faint breeze that blew through her hair, that caressed her cheeks soothingly, her thoughts went to him. she could have sworn that, just now, she`d heard his voice again, prompting her to turn around abruptly. maybe, just maybe, it really was him—
"uru—" takiko called out with a start, hands reaching out to grab the unlucky passerby. just when her fingers gripped the other person`s uniform, she realized, much to her embarrassment, how mistaken she was. "s-sorry...! my mistake."
my background has officially changed from the Avengers to this adorable picture of Uruki and Takiko
Don’t worry, I’ll bring them back once the movie is closer to coming out
the end of winter—
The girl was utterly confused as she stumbled backwards on realizing Aeris was there. The young flower girl stayed in her position as to not frighten the girl any further though she kept her soft expression, not at all fazed by the girls confused state. It was understandable to feel that way, sure Aeris had been shocked too, maybe she have been more shocked than she let on. She took a closer look at her, she definitely wasn’t from the same world as Aeris, her clothing was quite unusual to her.
Her eyes widened slightly as she asked whether she knew her father, she most likely didn’t in fact she was one hundred percent sure she didn’t. She also heard her mention an emperor of some kind, it seemed as though she’d just been taken here as she was in the middle of something. Aeris couldn’t even remember what she’d been doing…
“Hm sorry I probably don’t” she said softly “have you just got here? I mean you’re no long in your own world you know…” she sort of explained. How would you explain to a complete stranger who was already scared and confused that they were no longer in their own world? Their home. She carefully stood up, dusted off her dress a little before bending forward a bit, her hand stretched out as to help her up off the floor.
takiko knew she wasn`t in her own world. she wasn`t in her home world prior to being in this location, but she couldn`t have gone somewhere other than the world within the tome. it was just preposterous, impossible even! and how could this woman be so certain if she wasn`t from the world they were existing in at this very moment? takiko shook her head, refusing to accept the reality unfolding before her.
"i know i`m not—i know i`m not home," takiko began, trying hard to articulate her words in a manner that would make sense. "how can you know that i`m not home? isn`t this hokkan?"
a few strands of disheveled dark hair fell across her face. her heart was pounding in her chest, and her stomach felt as if it were in a knot. she was sick, more ill than she`d thought. these weren`t symptoms of tuberculosis, however, but were symptoms of complete and utter shock.
finding namame!
how could such a small thing run so far? takiko`s mind couldn`t even begin to fathom where the entity made of life stones could hide, although the imperative need to locate the genbu warrior pushed her to do so. adjusting to life here in arcadios was a daunting task. without a familiar face around to stave off the loneliness she consistently felt, surviving here would be a near impossible task.
she`d awoken that morning to rays of sunlight filtering through a roof of some elderly couple willing to lend her shelter for the time being alone, the rock entity missing. this alone sent her in a flurry of panic. it only took a few moments for the priestess to propel herself out of the door to embark in a fruitless search. she felt her heart constricting within her chest out of agitation, dismay, worry. naturally, she`d feared the worst—that he`d wandered off too far into the distance and couldn`t find his way back, or that he`d been taken into another world. namame couldn`t be outside alone. she needed to protect him!
tentatively, the priestess called her warrior`s name in hopes of luring him closer to her location, worry saturating her tone.
"namame? where are you, namame?"
