Eto didn’t receive an official introduction until chapter 54 of the manga, but she’s mentioned in chapter 1 through her novels, and those novels shaped the entirety of Tokyo Ghoul and immediately establish the type of character she is and how she views the world.

Sen Takatsuki’s novels are brought attention to constantly. Repeatedly. Over, and over. Ad nauseum. Her novels are incredibly important to her character, and they are often overlooked when it comes to analysis of her, with instead people focusing on how her novels relate to Kaneki. This is not wrong, but ignoring that she is the one who wrote those novels, and what they really say about her really takes away from Eto’s character. Because they are far more telling of her own character than they are of Kaneki’s character.
