Not a surprise. People had been telling him that his hands were “too big” since… no idea, but if he was to make a guess, he’d say the first time, he had held a sword. And honestly, he never had made a big thing of it, but… His eyebrow twitched.

The fabric felt strange on his skin, thin like parchment and cold. He couldn’t resist to touch the piece lightly. What really surprised him was that there was barely dust and no visible scratches. No wonder that this doll maker is putting so much effort into… this lesson! And the fabric has got no pattern…I don’t want to find out what he would do, if it did.

Kevin gave his best to follow the instructions; carefully enough so that his fist wouldn’t end as stuffing itself. One wrong move, and the pieces of fabric weren’t overlapping perfectly anymore. At the very least, I didn’t drop them. He suppressed a sigh and tried again.

“Instead... of getting frustrated... go slowly. The fabric... can slightly... overlap. It is..the best way... for stitching together.” He resisted the urge to just take control of everything. Patience was not much of his thing, but he was going to have to use as much as he possibly could right now.

“You are too... worried about... mistakes. Just focus... on the head. Do not... think about anything... but what you... are working on. We will worry... about the other problems... when you get... to them. Do not... be nervous... right now.”

“Lure? What like kidnapping?” He asked. Nah, why would this gypsy person want to kidnap people? That was ridiculous. He’d heard all sorts of lovely things about London. Kidnapping hadn’t been one of them.

“Anyone can run if they want. I mean, you got two good legs,” he pointed out. “Even two good arms. Bet you could dance! I love dancing!” He was getting more and more excited about the idea of this guy, and not actually the guy himself. He always did this where he’d decide someone’s personality for them and then would get crushed if he was proved wrong.

Drocell ignored the first sentence, knowing it would be better to not give anything away. Especially since he didn’t have equipment to do something to a larger person.

“I was simply... not built... for running. Or dancing.” How would he be able to convince the other to stop trying to get him to do things? It wasn’t going to happen tonight. Or ever. “I mostly... stay inside. I go out... only for... walking. My legs... would break... from too much... more.”

He was only mildly upset when the doll wasn’t handed over. He dropped his hand and leaned on the brick wall, contemplating. “No one that would be interested in breaking dolls. I mean, there’s people all over just looking for somewhere warm to sleep. But like I said they would sell them before they break them.” He shifted the guitar case on his back and thought some more.

“Do you know when it was broken? Maybe we could hunt them down! Like a game!” He said hopefully. “I love games! I’m good at chasing games. I can run fast and typically find people.”

Well. He really wasn’t expecting this to be the type of person he would be running into. He honestly tried not to approach people who insisted on bouncing around and especially running. That was not his forte.

“We do not need... to chase them. I do not know... when this... was broken. I find them... all the time... everywhere. If I knew... anything about him... or this... I would have caught them... by now. And I... do not chase. I lure. I was not... built to run.” Quite literally in fact. “Although... I cannot... lure an adult.”

Kevin stopped immediately. “Oh!” What am I doing? What a day! He clenched his fist again. I think, I…Wait a moment! A fist! That’s it!

“If I… if I took two pieces of fabric and put them around my fist, would I get an acceptable size? And the stuffing… He dared a wary sideglance at the material on the counter, would smaller balls (made of the fabric) work?”

Kevin hated himself for asking so many questions, but if this was the only way… So be it! At any rate, I won’t lift a finger before this doll maker has told me what to do. It’s all about my face after all. Even, if I wasn’t to return to this town, I mustn’t be a disgrace to Master Sinclair!

“Your hand... is slightly too big. You must remove... some extra fabric... if your fist... is used. That will be... more work for you. But... it may be best. You will not... have to measure much.” He quickly cut two pieces of larger fabric and set them down.

“Now... I may have to... help with it. If you drop it... I will try... to keep it up for you. I will give you... the stuffing... when ready. And... once again... stop being so nervous. You will... prick your fingers. Or worse. Ruin... the doll. So stay... calm.”

The pause in the man’s speech didn’t even phase him. It actually reminded him of a man he had once traveled with, who had tried the ritual he succeeded at. Only that man had failed, and it took a bad toll on him. He shook those thoughts from his head because he didn’t want to start missing them.

“I’ve seen loads of people, but I don’t think they’d have much interest in breaking pretty dolls. Stealing them and selling them for the next meal, maybe, but not just breaking them. May I see?” he extended a couple hands to try and get a better look at the doll. Another man (some days they were a woman) he had traveled with would have loved this little thing.

He didn’t seem interested in handing over the doll any time soon. Mainly because he knew handing it over had a high risk of the head falling and shattering. If the other person truly wanted to see it, he would just have to get closer. And since he was of no help, that probably wouldn’t happen.

“I did not ask... for a specific type... of person. I only wanted... to know... if you saw people. Unfortunately... you did not see... one person... alone. That is really... what I was... hoping for. You must not... have been back here... much today. You seem... almost like... the type to... do that. Only almost.”

“I see. Thank you.” Biting? Kevin blinked. This would be the last thing, he’d expect anyone or anything in this room to do. Sure, he wouldn’t call this shop “cozy”, but his fear was as good as gone, so hearing the doll maker’s words was a relief. Oddly. However, Kevin felt that speaking would be a serious mistake. Yet, he’d have to ask for a needle.

He bowed, took his gloves off, pocketed them, took one piece of fabric and placed it besides the drawing. He frowned. If this is over, I ’ll never touch sewing things again. My! How am I supposed to fold this? He scratched the back of his head. Truth was, he couldn’t even tie a ribbon.

He tried many ways, but there was none to turn the small square into a circle - or at the very least a form that resembled one.

He let out a noise that could almost be taken as a sigh The other was most definitely going to tear, rip, or snag something if he couldn’t just relax and wait for a few instructions. And if he really thought folding was that easy, he was very mistaken.

“Please wait. You are... trying to go... much too fast. You first... must know the size... you want to make. Folding as quickly... as possible... will guarantee a mistake.” He gently pushed the other’s hands down to the counter so he would stop. “There is no... simple fold... to make this a ball. It is best... to make two... half circles... then sew them together... around the stuffing. Just... go slowly.”

Mosoj had just come to the country, and was wandering around the big city in search of a place to stay for the night. He’d found a few nice alleyways, and a few bums offered to share their fire for the night, but he wanted to be closer to downtown. Kick off the whole street performing thing early in the morning so maybe he could get some warm bread for lunch. A good hope.

When he was stopped by what looked to him like a gypsy, he got excited. Maybe this guy would know a thing or two about where to stay or where to perform or that sort of thing. “Sure, ask away,” he said with a toothy grin that extended into the bandages that always covered his right eye.

He gave a quick look over this man and it was easy to tell he was very strange. But he probably wasn’t dangerous. He didn’t have the look in his eyes. Well... eye. Unfortunately, non dangerous people didn’t really know much about what would go on later at night. He was also probably least likely to be the one breaking everything.

“Have you... by chance... seen a person... walking around? Mostly... back here. He... or she... has been breaking... many things.” He adjusted the doll’s head so it wouldn’t fall off on the way back to the shop. “The have... been breaking... some expensive... items. I would like... to take care... of this problem.”

“Staying calm, huh?” That’s like telling a fisherman to catch fish with bare hands; not impossible - actually, I did this a lot when I was a child - but it takes an eternity!

Kevin took a shaky breath and glanced at the drawing. And then he realized something: The doll has got no face. Sure, it has eyes and a mouth. Two circles and…What would the Young Ladies say, if they saw this? Would they even recognize it ? Me fool!

Suddenly, he felt as if a great burden would have been taken away from him. He straightened up. Is the doll of the Young Lady also from a shop like this? If that’s true, I might… Anyway, if I got some time left, I’ll look around. But now he had to listen - and to watch. “Watch before you move.”

“So the head would be a good starting point, I suppose?” It was just a gut feeling. Or so Kevin wanted to believe; otherwise, he would have had to admit that he had been listening more carefully than the doll maker should know. Indeed, Kevin couldn’t shake a hint of mistrust off.

So the nervousness has yet to go away unlike he thought. And hoped. This was going to be very problematic. He wasn’t exactly sure why looking at the drawing was the reason. Nothing on the page or the actual doll was going to jump out and bite him. It didn’t have the mouth for it.

“Anywhere... is a good... starting point. Just remember... the head is attached last. If you are nervous... about something biting you... I assure you... neither I, nor the dolls, will bite. This doll... will not even have... an opening mouth.”

He held up two needles, thread, and fabric. He handed some of it over to the other. “Do not be nervous... when you attempt... to sew. I would rather... have neither of us... lose an eye... just because you were scared... of a decorated... piece of wood. There is no reason... to fear anything... in this room.”

The man slowly stood as he picked up a broken doll. It was a shame whenever these were smashed. Especially when they were his. At least when he found them he would be able to return to his home and fix them up. It woud just help if he knew who was doing this. Then maybe he could find a way to “fix” this problem.

“Hm?” He suddenly turned when he heard a person walking behind him. He doubted this person would know anything about the broken dolls, but he might as well ask if he had seen anyone running through here tonight. “Are you... busy now? I have... a question.”

Kevin opened his mouth to say, waiting wouldn’t be a problem. Then he remembered what his father had taught him: “ Watch before you move ”. It had been quite a painful lesson, and he had lost more swordfights than his pride would allow him to admit, but from his point of view, the situation wasn’t really different, was it?

Then again, he wasn’t exactly known for his patience - once, he had even thrown the box with the sewing things through the room. Yet, he couldn’t help but admire the skills of the Sinclair women. Their gracefullness and calmness. Their laugh and casual humming, no matter how “worse” the “mistake”.

I don’t have a choice. If this doll should be done before Emily’s… the Young Lady’s birthday. Kevin clenched his fist. “Yes, I do.”

As if it were actually possible, his expression became more serious than it had been originally. The lack of nervousness, or at least lessening of, would make all of this much easier. And it would need to be the way if the other person truly had no experience in doing any of this.

“The most difficult part... of any doll... is the hair. Do make sure... you do the hair on the head... before attaching the rest.” He knelt under his desk and went through boxes. He pulled out the items needed for this type off doll. The only thing missing under his desk was hair, but he could deal with that later. “Do you understand... that your hands must not shake... during this? You must remain... calm.”

“Oh,of course! My bad. Just… a sec… Kevin started to rummage through his pockets. Where -?! Why -?! There ! He pulled a piece of paper out and marched to the counter. Once this is over, will I be able to show my face in this area again ? Probably not. On the other hand, nobody needs to know… He shook his head to get rid of these unpleasant thoughts. “Here.

The colors aren’t accurate, but the form is. Some old pieces of cloth, sewed together, so to speak, and it should be able to move. A… rag… doll?

As for the hair… Well… Something that allows to tie ribbons, I guess.” He shrugged and gave the doll maker a helpless look.His own voice sounded so strange in his ears that he had to fight the urge to cover them.

To most, this stuttering and nervousness would be funny or laughable. At least amusing. But to him, this was just making things take longer when he might have work piling up with the back. Hopefully his composure would be regained soon. Especially if he expected to learn anything.

“That toy... is easy to make. I suppose... you want it soft. Stuffing something small... could be an issue. The arms are thin.. and it is complicated to not break the threads. You must have a... careful hand in order to do this. Do you think... you will be able to... handle waiting?” He pushed the doll to the side, thinking it would give the other a better chance of saying yes.

Kevin forced himself not to stare at the dolls on the shelves. How strange.How is it even possible that they look so… he gulped, real ? As if they were living. “Hello,” he said with a nod, not daring to take another step inside. “No, I fear, I’m not the one, you’re waiting for. I just… happened to pass by, and hoped, you could help me. He now searched the eyes of the man, he thought to be the owner. “You see, there’s this little girl, and I wanted to surprise her with a handmade doll…So could you…um… would you… he cleared his throat, would you tell me more about the art of how to make a doll, please?” He bowed, silently hating himself for this sudden bluntness. What’s wrong with me?

He took note of the nervousness. He could never understand why so many people who were afraid of or disturbed by dolls would come into his shop. At least why they would come into his shop on their own. Surely there was someone who wouldn’t be afraid to take their place. But this man must have just been afraid of these dolls if he was interested in learning.

“The art... of doll making. There is a lot... to learn. Clothes, hair, eyes, the entire body. And there are many types of dolls. Figurines, toys... puppets. You must be... more specific.”

Ⱶ The twins entered one by one. Hands set firmly on his hips, Humpty strode confidently into the foyer. He had a pleasant smile, looking none too menacing but also not at all worried by the fact he was probably trespassing.

Δ His twin slipped in after, Dumpty seemed more like a shadow than a second person at first. That was until he noticed the strange person that addressed them. Head canted, mirroring the one that questioned them, minus the little click at the end.
