With food storage and cooking, we didn’t clue into the wonders of a pressure cooker until 5 months into Mexico when we discovered ‘overlanding’ was a thing, and found this post by Karin-Marijke and Coen. It was the same for replacing the propane stove pictured here, with a Coleman Dual Fuel Stove.
Preparing our own meals was important for reasons of health as much as budget, but finding and storing fuel was tedious, especially when camping through remote areas of several countries. Aside from the soot, we found gasoline cooking on the Coleman combined with the efficiency of a pressure cooker did the trick. We could put together lentils, rice, curry, vegetables, pasta, etc. in a short time and use little fuel in the process.
We also used a Solo Stove Lite (which burns natural fuel we find most anywhere except the desert such as wood sticks, pinecones, etc.) and the Solo Alcohol Stove. The alcohol stove is easy for cooking something quick indoors, for boiling water, or when camping away from the truck and when weight is a concern. We can’t say enough about these two amazing finds.
On the digital gear, we’re just short the other Sony A7R camera and lens in this picture, as it was used to shoot the photo. We chose these cameras as much for the quality of the images as size. Both cameras fit in our Tuffy safe, pack easily, and don’t bring the same attention big DSRL cameras do.
The interior photo shows the bench which can slide out to make for a good sized bed for one, but for two, we often sleep head to toe if not using the roof top tent. We mostly sleep inside the truck when keeping a low profile in cities or in severe cold. The back table area behind the drivers seat lifts up and contains an ARB refrigerator (tied to the solar panel and inverter) and a long storage cubby. The first two cabinets house our water and filter system from the sink along with our food and cooking gear. The idea with this design was to keep us from over packing unneeded gear and leaving a sense of openness by not building above the window line.
On the final tools photo, these are the essentials for repairing or tightening this or that on the truck, but we also carry spares - gaskets and replacement hoses, belts, fuses, bolts, engine fluids, and recovery gear. We also picked up a bundle of metal wire on a tip from an Australian friend, which was a great bush fix on three separate occasions.
