I have a very clear idea that Fortuna has its own language, a kind of Italian with a greater presence of Latin, like some words or even the neuter pronoun they had. Anyway, the point is that Nero speaks Italian; he would understand a native speaker very well and have a very good conversation with them. Who knows, maybe his English even has a macaronic accent, as they say.
This is where some of Nero's habits come in, such as when he speaks very fast and/or angrily, he ends up mixing languages; when concentrating, he starts murmuring in Italian; shouting insults and swear words in Italian at the demons he kills; and of course, doing what everyone who knows more than one language does: speaking in front of people in another language they don't understand.
The funny part is him venting to Kyrie on the phone while he's with Dante and Vergil on a mission, talking about Dante's complaints and habits, complaining about how he can't properly talk to his father even though he wants to know more about him... what Nero doesn't know and doesn't even consider is that Vergil understands everything he's saying.
Vergil spent a considerable amount of time in Fortuna before leaving and read enough books in Latin (which I suspect is the standard language of demons) to have a frank conversation with practically any language derived from Latin. So yes, Vergil speaks Fortuna Italian and understands absolutely everything his son says on the phone. He simply can no longer go and tell his son that he understands everything. I mean, he had no intention of snooping into his son's private conversations, but Nero doesn't exactly speak quietly, and now he feels it's too late to say he heard all of Nero's complaints, while Dante laughs at the situation even without fully understanding and still tries to advise his poor brother.
So I simply imagined the following scenario: Nero covered in demonic blood shouting every curse word in Italian he can remember (Porca miseria! Mannaggia, Vaffanculo!! Dio cane!), only for Vergil to utter an "Attento a come parli," which would be the equivalent of "watch your language."
And then Nero slowly turns to face his father, who even expects a scolding from his son and a series of insults for not having said he understood what he was saying in Italian before, but all Vergil sees is Nero completely red – not from blood – but from shame and at the same time curious about how on earth Vergil learned Italian or how long he's understood what he says to Kyrie on the phone or even in front of him and "Santo cielo, tell me Dante doesn't know Italian," because then he would kill himself. There's so much they say about Dante in Fortuna, or he said it in front of him, that Jesus, this boy needs to go back to praying to Grandpa.
