Before #BagsOfHelp
Help us get the best Community Kitchen Garden & Petting Farm
Delighted that our project to transform a piece of disused land in the grounds of Elmhurst into a community garden & petting farm has been selected by Tesco as one of three local community projects to receive funding. This is part of their #BagsOfHelp community grants scheme and is funded by the 5p per plastic bag charge. We will be asking anyone using a Tesco store to vote for our project. We will set up an accessible allotment to grow produce for our Bistro plus a safe home for ex-battery hens and bunnies who need a new home. There is a lot of research about the soothing and calming effects of people living with dementia interacting with hens and other animals and we look forward to having this available before the Summer. Voting for our project will be taking place in the following Tesco stores: BURY EXPRESS BRANDLESHOLME EXP BURY TOTTINGHM RD EXP PRESTWICH BURY OL EXP BOLTON LITTLE LEVER RADCLIFF WATER ST EXP RAMSBOTTOM METRO BURY PRESTWICH Voting starts on the 27th Feb until the 6th March 2016. If our project comes 3rd we will receive £8k, 2nd is £10k and 1st place will get us £12k. If you would like to encourage people to vote for us our Twitter handles are @strongrootsCIC & @caterwithpride and please use hashtag #BagsOfHelp Any questions then just ask! @CaterWithPride MOVES TO BURY TO OPEN COMMUNITY BISTRO
PRESS RELEASE – 27th January 2015
As part of its £1.6m investment to modernise the Elmhurst Short-Stay Service in Whitefield to give it a ‘hotel-feel’, Bury Council has appointed Catering with Pride (run by social enterprise Strong Roots CIC) to be its in-house caterers from February 2015.
Catering with Pride will be running the kitchen and restaurant, providing freshly cooked meals, prepared on the premises for the guests and visitors of Elmhurst. Through creating a pleasurable dining experience, the aim is to encourage family and friends to join Elmhurst’s guests at meal-times, so enabling them to dine together as they would in their own homes or in a hotel restaurant.
Catering with Pride have developed a seasonal ‘Best of British’ themed menu which includes an all-day Full English Breakfast, a continental breakfast buffet and an extensive lunchtime menu with a selection of freshly prepared sandwiches, jacket potatoes and homemade soups. Teatime meals will include two ‘Best of British’ daily specials that will include a Roast Dinner on Sundays, plus some of Catering with Pride's specialities, such as Beef & Black Bean Chilli, Lasagne, Chips & Salad, and Chicken Curry and Rice, offering great choice and great taste.
Strong Roots CIC’s Managing Director, Ben Crouch said “We are delighted to be moving our operations to the Elmhurst Centre and to be entering into this partnership with Bury Council. We will be enhancing the quality and choice of food, contributing to the positive experience of their customers. Elmhurst guests may have just left hospital or be staying for a period to allow family carers some respite, so their well-being and comfort is our ultimate aim during their stay. Through contracting with a social enterprise, Bury Council are investing wisely to secure maximum positive impact in the local and social economy, as we will be identifying local growers and producers to source ingredients for our seasonal menus, and are committed to offering training and employment to local residents who are finding it difficult to seek and sustain employment. As our business grows, we intend to give back to Bury the opportunities it has offered to us through our profit-redistribution scheme.”
Strong Roots CIC will manage the development of Catering with Pride’s in-house service to provide guests and visitors of Elmhurst an excellent and affordable array of food, plus they will:
Prepare to launch the facility as a thriving community bistro and hub of social action by operating 'TimeBank 'to enable local residents, guests, staff and volunteers to share and exchange their skills and talents.
Crowd fund to set-up a Petting Farm to entertain young children and adults visiting relatives or using the Bistro (plus the hens will also supply the centre with free range eggs).
Plan to launch an external catering service for business and special events in Bury and the surrounding areas by the summer of 2015.
Catering with Pride is managed by Liz Macdonald (Catering Manager) who said “We are so excited to start at Elmhurst. I have designed an authentic British-themed menu that I’m confident will be enjoyed by our guests and will also draw in crowds from across Bury. We’ll be open Monday to Sunday between 8am and 7pm. We’ll always have something on the menu to suit all tastes, and if we haven’t, customers can just let us know what they want, and we’ll see what we can do. If people want to come in for an informal meeting and grab a coffee and sandwich then we’d love to see them there.”

I believe that the honeymoon period has been long gone for charities and other civic society organisations that reaped some of the rewards of commissioned public services. With greater risk pushed down and demands for ‘more for less’ the return for most charities was the ability to receive a...
Update on Strong Roots CIC
This has been a great year for Strong Roots CIC.
We started it by investing a proportion of our profit in our first Planting the Seeds Programme in Feb / Mar 2014 and trained five people who were out of work and had aspirations to start their own enterprise. We have watched participants either get their ventures off the ground (https://www.facebook.com/thebottlelab & http://www.lindseysandland.com) or rethink their career choices in a proactive and purposeful manner. Feedback on the programme was very positive and we couldn't be prouder of what our #seedlings have achieved and continue to wish them every success in the future and continue to act as a sounding board if ever they need us.
We have also won consultancy work which has included running an impact evaluation of a service supporting ex-offenders and individuals furthest from the workplace to retrain in a working environment to ultimately seek and stay in paid employment. This project involved developing an effective method to evaluate outcomes and incorporated the useful recommendations from the National Children's Bureau's Measuring Employability Skills research. Strong Roots designed then implemented an evaluation toolkit to measure current impact but also ensured that the toolkit was simple and had clear guidance which meant it could be used by Project Managers in the future to ensure that their outcomes would be continuously monitored without the need to further engage with consultants.
Ambitiously we stated in our business plan for 2013-2016 that in year two (this year) we would launch our first neighbourhood enterprise that would be under our umbrella. It needed to be a commercially viable enterprise trading goods and services for profit, which would be reinvested back into the community and offer opportunities for employment and training to individuals finding it difficult to obtain and sustain paid work. Catering With Pride launched this weekend offering Sunday Roast dinners at The Kings Arms (Salford) and not only did we make a profit on the day but we also received excellent feedback and coverage on Twitter (@caterwithpride) and Facebook (www.facebook.com/cateringwithpride).
These are still early days, but Catering With Pride has already taken four big orders to cater for events and Christmas Parties over the next few months and will be marketing to potential new clients to help them with their catering needs. As a social enterprise, we are planning to run a free cookery school (5-6 half day sessions) for single parents in Manchester & Salford early next year with a free crèche available and (tbc) entertainment for the kids by a CBeebies presenter. More news on this to come. Need to make the money first!
Thank you to clients, colleagues, friends, seedlings and most importantly my Mum for helping to make this happen. It has been a challenging journey to start a new enterprise during the ‘age of austerity’ but I couldn't be happier with what has been achieved. As the wise sage Dolly Parton said "the way I see it, if you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain".
Onwards and upwards.
Ben Crouch, Director, Strong Roots CIC
Social Value or just 'doing the right thing well'?
I created Strong Roots because it is important to me as a business we have a responsibility to work effectively and improve the world around us. I have been a consultant and trainer for over a decade but running Strong Roots first programme for one of our social aims was one of the most satisfying moments of my career.
Starting up a new enterprise is TOUGH. Starting up a new enterprise when you're unemployed and managing your mental health is TOUGH, especially when you have a previously experienced episodes of mental illness. I should know!
Strong Roots is committed to use our profits to help unemployed individuals with experience of mental illness or that have other barriers to employment gain the confidence, skills and guidance to seek, secure and sustain purposeful employment. After our first year of trading Strong Roots was able to use some of its profit to run our first “Planting the Seeds Programme”. This was a three day course over three weeks where participants were given a workbook with guidance and tables to start developing a fully costed Business & Financial Plan and followed a series of exercises to learn new theory that could be applied to an enterprise idea they were exploring.
In friendly environment encouraging participants to share their ideas, questions and concerns, complex business management processes were broken down into accessible language and small achievable tasks.
As part of our evaluation of the pilot ‘Planting the Seeds Programme’, participants were asked “Did participating in the 3 workshops change / improve your behaviour?” One #seedling (a name we developed for programme participants on the first workshop) was @lindseysandland whose partner had seen our advert in an e-newsletter. Lindsey is going to start-up as a freelance graphic designer, lettering artist and creator of bespoke pieces of art. This is what Lindsey had to say about how her behaviour changed / improved because of her participation on our course:
“In relation to Strong Roots changing/improving behaviours I'd have to say I had a mental shift for the better as a result of your course. Initially I felt totally out of my comfort zone but now I'm so glad I saw it through. It's given me such a boost and made me more focused. I am more confident than ever that I can make it work...with the right amount of effort of course! Whereas before when I thought about starting my own business I used to get quite panicky. The course has helped me feel more in control because it's all been broken down into achievable goals. I think more logically now and I also think I'm more open minded about opportunities, solving problems etc. In short, a very positive experience which has changed me for the better.”
This was exactly the sort of result that we were hoping for. Lindsey has fantastic talents which she can now confidently utilise to secure work that is more purposeful and fulfilling for her.
The Planting the Seeds Programme is linked to Strong Roots profit margins so we are hoping to run another programme later in the year. However, this is a programme that can be commissioned so if you would like to learn more please get in touch.
Happy Monday!
Ben

Case Study 1: Redesign Member Services for Greater Manchester’s Social Enterprise Network
Assignment Scope:
Together Works CIC was the Greater Manchester support network for Social Enterprises in a regional partnership with Social Enterprise North West. It had not been offering direct services to members for 18 months. I was contracted by the Board of Directors to engage with social enterprise members in Greater Manchester and senior stakeholders to re-position the organisation to offer beneficial services that would attract strategic support and ultimately funding.
How assignment was implemented:
Conducted survey of Members and non-members to identify common themes in challenges and opportunities facing the sector.
Developed and implemented a Stakeholder Engagement Strategy identifying and building relationships with key stakeholders across Greater Manchester and ensuring deep understanding of high-level strategies (e.g. tackling worklessness, Social Value Act and GM Strategy) and their influence to the possible strategic objectives of Together Works CIC.
Further consultation through facilitated Focus Groups and Networking Events for GM based Social Enterprises.
Undertook an organisational diagnostic based on the McKinsey 7S model and produced final report with recommend actions to Board of Directors.
Analysed data from Members Survey and Organisational Diagnostic and presented results in easily digested format with costed and prioritised options to Board of Directors.
Secured financial investment to design and implement two new time-limited services:
Supporting Community Initiatives Programme
Social Investment Readiness Programme
Created a project team consisting of a “Programme & Partnerships Coordinator” and “Communications Officer” and developed a detailed five month project work-plan for the team to follow and complete.
Ran two programmes to time and budget ensuring intended outputs and outcomes were achieved and successes and challenges reported back to Funders.
Assignment’s impact:
Despite significant governance challenges that resulted in the recent closure of Together Works CIC, myself and the project team were able to significantly increase membership by 35% in less than six months by designing, resourcing and implementing strategically influenced and member-informed programmes offering support and skills development.
The Supporting Community Initiatives Programme (SCIP) took 15 newly emerging social entrepreneurs through the basics of business planning ensuring that they were supported to develop a robust and realistic plan to help them start-up their initiative. All participants stated the course had significantly increased their knowledge and confidence. All participants are still successfully progressing their enterprise and are contributing to their local and regional social economy.
The Social Investment Readiness Programme (SIRP) took ten Greater Manchester Social Enterprises through a training programme to test and hone the investment readiness of their income generating ideas before pitching them to a ‘Dragon’s Den’ style panel of six national and regional social investors. The information and evidence from this programme was packaged into an online toolkit to be available to other social enterprises wanting to secure investment financing including a Traffic Light Toolkit and links to practical guidance on addressing any investment readiness issues.
The unique tools developed for SIRP are still available on the Together Works website (http://togetherworks.org.uk/TLTintro). I presented all findings and recommendations to the Manchester Transforming Local Infrastructure Programme Board in October 2013.

He is happy to share his experiences if it helps you to achieve your own business goals.
Apologies for website problems
It appears our site was hacked before Christmas. Is now up and running. If you come across any problems then please let us know. Our Twitter and Facebook pages are continuing to work without any issues.
Quick Update
It has been ages since I wrote a proper article. It has been a very busy few months for the Strong Roots team (and we're not complaining). The team has grown and we're busy delivering a range of assignments for our clients ranging from running specific front-line projects (Together Works CIC), designing an amazing logo and functional website (www.rwwa.org.uk) and created a business modelling tool for a GMCVO project. To name but a few.
However, one of my aims when I set-up Strong Roots was to share any learning, observations and opinions on important matters that affected Strong Roots, our clients and their beneficiaries and this is something that I'm still keen to do. I received a lot of compliments and positive feedback from my State of the Sector articles on issues from the Social Value Act and it's impact on traditional Prime Contractors to the impact on organisational culture for charities who had been in receipt of large public sector contracts.
There are lots of things I'd like to write about at the moment:
* Charity CEO pay. * Responding to the Bedroom Tax from an individual and community perspective. * Charities that accidentally leave their beneficiaries behind. * Why Government MUST open up the markets and tackle monopolies to save the UK economy
But each needs a bit of time and effort to shape my arguments and put together workable solutions and time at the moment is something that I don't have a lot of. So - if you would like to read a Blog in the next few weeks - let me know what topic you'd like me to cover and I'll get something published by mid-Sept. Otherwise this Blog will probably stay quite quiet until Oct.
You can follow me on Twitter @bencrouchmcr but don't expect reasoned arguments in 140 characters but happy to have my brain picked or have a mini-debate!
All the best and hope life is treating you well.
Ben
P.s. On Twitter you can also follow my colleagues @OisinShare and @BethPowell1 who do amazing things inside and outside of work. Plus follow (if you don't already) @strongrootsCIC for updates on any new deals on our range of products & services or events that we're running!

PRESS RELEASE - Together Works: Social Investment Readiness Programme for Manchester Social Enterprises
Together Works is the social enterprise network for Greater Manchester and we are supporting Manchester-based organisations to create or improve their business plans to enable them to secure income by trading for profit. The Social Enterprise sector is the fastest growing sector in the UK and can help Greater Manchester's economy grow and create sustainable jobs. Many organisations and people have great ideas or are already successfully trading on a small scale but don't feel ready or able to scale up. Together Works can help. "Social investment is the provision and use of capital to generate social as well as financial returns. Social investors weigh the social and financial returns they expect from an investment. Social investment is...to generate social impact, but with the expectation of some financial return" (www.bigsocietycapital.com). Social Investment might be the best source of finance where a social enterprise intends to increase in scale and productivity over time. However, we know that take-up for social investment in Manchester has been low and before taking loan financing many individuals need to have greater confidence in their products and demand in the market. This programme offers a rare opportunity for social businesses to learn new skills, have business ideas constructively critiqued by peers and experts and finally to pitch an idea to social investors in a Dragon's Den, with no commitment to take any investments offered. This free programme involves a one day workshop where organisations will work through and improve their business plans and construct robust financial forecasts. The second day of the programme will be based around communicating ambitions clearly and learning more about social investment. The Social Investor 'Dragons' will hear participants' pitches on the afternoon of Tuesday 10th September. To apply, download and return an Expression of Interest form - which can be found here: http://togetherworks.org.uk/SIRP. Applications must be in by Friday 2nd August. To increase access to and understanding of Social Investment, Together Works is also supporting the delivery of a Funders Fair, where community groups, charities, and existing social enterprises can meet Social Investors directly, as well as a plethora of other social funders and grant givers. This is a really exciting opportunity to learn more about Social Finance. The fair will be held on Friday 13th September at King's House Conference Centre, 10am-3.30pm. This programme is part of a wider project funded by a Transforming Local Infrastructure award. For more information about Together Works, please take a look at our website: www.togetherworks.org.uk. Please contact Beth Powell via [email protected] with any enquiries. -- Beth Powell - Interim Membership and Programmes Co-ordinator

New Blooms - design and visual communication services
Strong Roots has seen development in recent months through the merging of our individual talents, experiences and skills that all lead to us reaching our objectives as an organisation. During the creation of our organisation's identity, it became clear that our experience of branding, design and communication is a much needed service in the third sector.
'New Blooms' is the name of Strong Roots' design and communication service - a list of products that we can provide your organisation so it can look and sound its best. Good communication in our sector means a strong social enterprise environment for us all.
The service is based on our years of working with small and large organisations, improving the ways that they look and sound in dealings with their clients, customers and members. Does your organisation need help in the way it communicates visually? Are you working with outdated designs? Perhaps you’re still trying to get your website off the ground? Is there an event coming up that you need to promote, or a product to advertise? It can be a rebrand, new communications strategy, advertising template or quite simply identifying a font that matches your audience better. New Blooms will bring a new life to what you do best. In all, we can provide:
A Design or revamp of your identity, including logos, fonts and printed media
Website design with content you can manage yourself
Getting the most out of social media platforms
Strategic and personalised communication plans
Training in how to manage your visual identity
Communication through language: the best ways to speak to your audience
Training in using your visual identity in design software.
The services are are carried out by Strong Roots' Communications Officer Oisín, who has a BA in Visual Communications and over eight years of experience working in the graphic design industry, with organisations both large and small, independent and multinational. Bringing his experience of working with small businesses to that of working with the third sector is allowing knowledge gathered from several areas of design to come together to create quality, lasting and impressionable work.
If this is something that you feel you need for your organisation, do get in touch with us to arrange a meeting where we can best decide the direction to grow, and ultimately, bloom in.
