jack watching pride & prejudice with you on the couch, readers perched on his nose as he looks at the takeout menu on his phone. arm thrown over your shoulders, gray sweats loose around his waist, soft faded green tee clinging to his broad chest. under his breath he's murmuring, reading the menu items to himself, and you can feel the warm mint on your cheek. it's a rainy spring evening, and the soft glow of your candle has created the coziest environment in your shared living room. there's two chairs, the dining room stools, even the floor to sit on, but here you are; cuddled up to your old man on the loveseat, your arm pressed atop his. in between his endless scrolling and zoom-in, zoom-out motions on the menu, jack peeks up at the screen. he's seen pride & prejudice probably 50 times because of you, but he still knows the scenes when you lose your breath. still recognizes the way your lip pertrudes and wobbles at the rain confession. adjusts his body to receive you better, opens his arms and coos "i know baby, i know, it's your favorite part, i know"
this hit me so deeply as someone who slept 13 hours last night <3 fem!reader 654 words
John was lucky to get this much time out of you, if he's being honest.
Neither of you have a typical relationship with weekends. John works odd days, often multiple in a row where he just doesn't bother to leave the hospital for the 6 hours between shifts. You try to mould your schedule around John's as best you can but a lot of the time your days off just miss each other.
So, to have not only a Friday night but also both days of the weekend free for the two of you is a miracle of nature.
John had kissed you goodbye that morning, slipped a spare key to his Jeep on your keyring and told you to come meet him at the hospital when you were finished with work.
You'd ducked inside the ED right when you got there, hair windswept from the train and looking perfectly to be the picture of in-love that the rest of the hospital staff know you to be.
He'd been lucky, right in the middle of checking on a patient's chart when you'd practically drifted in on the breeze. Your cheeks were snowbitten and your smile blinding in it's intensity, and John hadn't hesitated to move around the desk to kiss you hello.
He had 48 minutes left until he was officially off the clock, and he sent you to go sit in his nice warm car with a book and a blanket he'd stashed on his way out the door. He wanted to kiss you so bad it was worth the absolute flaying he got from Carol and Susan when you went back out to the car.
In the locker room, he hears Benton call out to him about something. His hat's already on over his ears and he has plausible deniability with the door already half-open and one foot out the door.
When he gets to the car, he finds you exactly where he'd expected to find you; you're curled up under the blanket fully horizontal in the backseat. Your book is on the floor and he's sure you really tried to read it.
He's leaning over the center console, one knee propped up so he can come kiss your forehead. "Hi, baby."
You're lovely asleep but lovelier awake, and he kisses both of your cheeks. Your eyes creep open, sluggish but adorable in your ministrations. "Hi, handsome," you fish a hand out of the blanket to brush one of the strands of hair sticking out of his hat back behind his ear. "How was work?"
"It was good." This is a lie and you both know it. "You tired, sweet girl?"
You shake your head, honeyed smile drawing him back in for another kiss. He can feel you playing with the hair on the nape of his neck, grinning so wide he almost can't even kiss it off you. John knows exactly how this is going to work. He'll lure you into the front seat with him, you'll fight to stay awake the entire ride home, you'll promise you're awake enough to sit up with him and John will leave to grab you a glass of water and you'll be knocked out on the couch. He's almost giddy with excitement.
"'m awake," you insist, rubbing sleep from your eye. You struggle to pull yourself up in the limited space and he reaches an arm out to steady you. "Missed you."
"I missed you too, baby." He kisses your cheek and the two of you spend the next minute or so both maneuvreing until you're situated in the front seat.
He turns away from you to grab at his seatbelt. "Do you have any ideas on what you want to do for dinner?" He clicks it into place.
"Hmm?" Your eyes open blearily. "What's wrong?"
The laugh he lets out is so full of affection it seems to wake you properly this time.
