“Maybe I was hoping one day he’d come looking for me.”
If there was one sentence, one arrangement of softly spoken words from five years earlier that would come back to haunt him with a vengeance, never would Deeks have thought it’d be that.
He’d never thought that would actually become a reality.
He’s staring into his second glass of bourbon when he feels someone slip onto the barstool next to him, motioning the bartender over with a simple wave of her hand. “I’ll have what he’s having,” says the familiar voice of Talia del Campo as she shakes her head, long dark locks flowing over her shoulders.
The bartender looks her up and down. “You sure? That’s one hell of a strong bourbon.”
Talia just smirks. “I hope you warned him of that,” she quips, cocking her head toward the scruffy blond on her left. “A glass of eggnog puts him out like a light.”
“It was really strong eggnog,” Deeks protests.
It’s not until the bartender wanders to the other end of the bar that Talia turns to face her one-time partner, the one she’d attempted to proposition before learning quite quickly that his heart had always belonged to someone else. “So,” she begins, resting her elbow atop the bar as she looks at him. “Things with the happy couple not so happy?”
“We’re happy,” he defends quickly. He lifts his glass to his lips, closing his eyes as the burn flows down his throat. “I mean, we, ah, we moved in together.”
Just briefly, there’s a fleeting smile that tugs at the corner of his lips – it’s gone just as quickly as it had come, though. “So basically,” Talia posits, “she moved into your place, and you had to move out to make room for all her stuff.”
