Whenever a news anchor on cable or broadcast television says something along the lines of "we're on your side," stop listening. Just grab your remote and press the power button. YOU DECIDE WHETHER OR NOT THEY ARE ON YOUR SIDE.

When I was 12 years old, I came out to my mother as a lesbian. She wasn't too happy at all. My dad was pretty upset as well. I dated this girl for about a year and then she dumped me. Then I met this sweet guy when I was 14 and discovered that bisexuality is indeed a thing. And it seemed to blow over with my parents because now at least I seemed straight being with a guy. So now Im 19 and engaged to this guy. But this year I made a discovery about my gender identity as well. I came to the conclusion that I am bigender. It means I take on male and female roles, depending on how I get up and feel about myself and look at myself in the mirror in the morning. So on the day of my graduation from community college, I woke up wanting to put on a dress shirt and a tie. Then I started to feel sick, realizing that I might have to go through that whole crappy feeling again of being rejected by my own parents. My mom didnt even bring it up, but I knew that she noticed. "You arent mad about my clothes?" I asked. "Why, they're just clothes." She answered. Five or six years ago, there would've been a different reaction. I cried a little bit, and then left to pick up my fiance so we could get to the ceremony on time. I just hope I can use this story to give hope to all the little ones on here that might not feel a ray of acceptance from their parents about their gender identity or sexual orientation or asexuality or whatever it is that you think and feel. Sometimes it takes time for people. Some people need a few days, months, years, maybe even a decade or two, to come around. You can be there to answer their questions and share stories to help them learn. But there's hope.

I ran into this little journalism major gem at the Boston Public Library's free exhibit about American independence on my trip to City Year Boston! It is one of the first known pieces of American Propaganda and was used during the American Revolution. It shows the British shooting at innocent civilians and was published in an early newspaper. It was later admitted to be an exaggeration. The first picture is what I saw at the exhibit. The second picture is a close up that I found on an educational website of the first picture.

My fiancé had a blast watching me try to read all the old newspapers at these exhibits.

Confession #74

Before the semester was over, I submitted a fifteen page creative non-fiction journalism final piece. I got an overall grade of an "A" in the class but I'm really anxious to see the professor's corrections. I have him a self-addressed stamp and everything. He better send it or I'm going to flip the frick frack out.

Hey I'm a sophomore majoring in investigative journalism but I have no clue what I want to minor in. Any ideas on great minors?

Hi TrentWaters, thanks for writing in.

Minors are interesting because in general they don’t leave you that much more qualified for a particular job. However, they are a good way to explore what specialty or beat you might want to be in eventually.

I’ve broken down some possible minors and how they could translate well to beats in the future. 

Political Science (what I did): Local, national, international government beats. 

Economics (macro): Business, Stocks, debt, etc.

Arts: Whichever medium you minor in: theatre, painting, etc.

Science: I don’t recommend minoring in sciences, as most science journalists that I’ve met majored in a science and then began writing about it. 

Any minor that teaches you about video editing, audio editing, photography or other technical skills are great, as you’ll need all of them.

Im having so much trouble gaining a following with my editorial blog. I truly dont understand how some people gain so much momentum and others just sit around with a nearly dead blog. I've tried all of the social media I could! Snapchat, Vine, Twitter, Facebook, and WordPress. I even have my own wix site. What am I doing wrong? #halp
