Hetalia: Axis Powers
Ok, last blog lets go. Hetalia: Axis Powers was a wild show to end on, but once you watch it for a while you get numb to how chaotic this anime is. The show portrays countries and major world powers as people who are essentially caricatures of their country. The show is filled with stereotypes which is not only super entertaining, but also quite interesting because it is from a Japanese perspective.
The show takes us through World War 2, mainly through the perspective of the Axis powers (Germany, Japan and Italy). This is a perspective that isn’t often seen in western media so that was fun to see. In fact, the Allies who are usually portrayed as heroic in western media, were just as made fun of as the Axis, maybe even a little more. It is also unique to see such a silly take on World War 2 from Japanese media because it is usually quite serious like in the anime A Grave of Fireflies. Also, the attitudes of post war Japan have been very pacifist and anti-war.
Japan is perhaps the only character in this anime who wasn’t poked fun at. Of course, this makes sense as this is a Japanese anime, but it sort of sticks out like a sore thumb. It does however give much insight to Japan’s own national identity.
Although this anime is plain ridiculous, I think this Hetalia: Axis Powers is a good example of how media influences national discourse. There are clearly exaggerated stereotypes and Japan is clearly painted in a better light. This can further solidify stereotypes in the culture around as and add to our sense of nationalism for our country.
This anime is probably pretty problematic when looked at from a critical eye, but it was interesting to get a peak into Japanese national discourse especially about World War Two.
