"Your dress in Phnom Penh!"
About a year ago I received an email from a customer in London who had some fit questions about a few styles. She had discovered Study several seasons earlier at Dagmar Rousset, her favourite shop in Melbourne (our favourite too, Hen!) and had been a loyal customer ever since. Since then Henrietta has sent me pics of her wearing our clothes in different parts of the world, and the email she sent me today was particularly touching so I asked her if I could share it.
How are you, Tara?
I'm nearing the end of my fieldwork trip in Cambodia. Today was particularly tough and sad - visiting a lake community in which 3000 families have been evicted, to make way for a private investor development.
Here I am, first with a man who has rebuilt his house on the eviction site, then with one family who have accepted a home relocation package to a truly depressing, faraway neighbourhood outside of Phnom Penh, ignored and isolated.
Thank you for the pleasure of the dress! The day was a bit rugged so the twist dress got a bit twisted - I know it's meant to look different!
Very best wishes, and do keep well
Henrietta xx

Algae Bloom on Lake Erie
The dominant species in the Lake Erie bloom is microcystis spp., a type of freshwater blue-green algae that produce a toxin harmful to humans. If consumed, microcystin can cause numbness, nausea, dizziness, and vomiting and lead to liver damage. (In rare cases, it can be deadly.) On August 2, 2014, environmental monitors for Toledo and surrounding towns in northwestern Ohio determined that public water supplies had levels of microcystin toxin that were higher than recommended by the World Health Organization (1.0 parts per billion). They warned residents not to drink or cook with tap water; boiling is not effective against the toxin. Though the bloom has continued, treatment facilities have since added extra filtering steps (including activated carbon), and public water sources were declared safe again on August 4.
Tim Davis, a harmful algae specialist with the NOAA Great Lakes Environmental Research Lab, noted that the 2014 bloom is not necessarily larger or more intense than any other recent year; it has simply had a more direct human impact because of its location in Maumee Bay. North winds recently pushed the bloom toward the northwestern Ohio shoreline and right around the water intake system for the city of Toledo. The mats of algae do not affect shipping, but they have a strong impact on water quality for consumption and recreation….
Blooms of microcystis and other species of phytoplankton occur every summer on Lake Erie, where nutrients (mainly phosphorous and nitrogen) are plentiful due to decades of runoff from farms and cities. Research suggests that the arrival of invasive zebra mussels in the lake has changed the food web in ways that may promote certain algal species by removing competitors. And as the southernmost and shallowest of the Great Lakes, Lake Erie warms quickly and the water column tends to stagnate in layers, without much mixing to distribute heat or nutrients. Microcystis thrives in this environment, and the blooms have reached record proportions several times in recent years.

THIS IS WHY WE BUY ORGANIC. Seriously though, this is only one of the many ways nitrogen run off is affecting our earth and health.
Another place around the US where algal blooms are a problem. In the Gulf of Mexico, there is a dead zone where fertilizer run off caused an algal bloom. These blooms suck all the oxygen out of the water and block sunlight; so no more fish, and no more phytoplankton (which scientists believe contribute between 50%-80% of the world's oxygen). The upsetting part is that there aren't really any regulations OR RECOMMENDATIONS on how much fertilizer farms should use. When fertilizer is put on crops, it stops working at some point, and putting more on just won't help; kind of like how stores sell SPF 80, but anything over SPF 50 is going to work just the same. The nitrogen rich fertilizer then isn't absorbed into the soil, and rain washes it into bodies of water. It's upsetting because if farms cut back on fertilizer use, it's a win win for them and the environment; they'd be wasting less money throwing away fertilizer, AND there wouldn't be runoff.
