I've been thinking of this for a while now and I'll probably look like a clown when this proves to not be true but the way the writers are writing the Gallo/Violet/Hawkins love triangle is so different to how they wrote the Casey/Brett/Grainger and the Severide/Stella/Hazmat Zach triangles.
With Brettsey, Sylvie was pushing herself to move on with Grainger though it was quite obvious that she was still in love with Casey. The same thing with Stella having strong feelings for Kelly while dating Zach.
While Grainger and Hazmat Zach were presented as obstacles for both ships, Hawkins doesn't feel like one. First of, he actually has a personality and got proper character growth. Now there was nothing wrong with either Grainger or Zach but in the show if it didn't have to do with being in the middle of Brettsey or Stellaride getting together, then they were hardly used. Hawkins, on the other hand, was presented as this tough and harsh paramedic chief who eventually shows that he has a good heart and is very supportive, even going the extra mile for his paramedics.
In addition, he and Violet developing feelings for each other wasn't instant but was built up as they interacted more and more. I believe that if he was just meant to be an obstacle, he and Violet would have been together by now in the show and we, as the audience, would have seen Gallo pining. Instead, we got Hawkins telling Violet they should stay away from each other for a while because he is her boss.
Also, Violet's feelings for Hawkins are real as we saw from the last scene in 10x11. She genuinely likes him and he genuinely likes her.
I'm probably wrong but this love triangle feels so different I had to analyse why.
