Before WWII officially began, there was the partitioning of Czechoslovakia. Hitler requested eastern Czechoslovakia at the Munich Conference. Hitler had a weak military at the time, and Czechoslovakia had very strong defenses, they could have defeated Nazi forces with relative ease. There was even talk in Hitler's own government that he would be forcibly removed from office if his request was denied and he continued with the invasion regardless. But Neville Chamberlain, the British prime minister, was in favor of appeasement to avoid starting a conflict that might spark another great war. Eastern Czechoslovakia was taken, and Western Czechoslovakia would be annexed later on.
