These two pieces will be in the Yellowstone Art Museum’s 48th annual art auction on the 5th of March. They are copies of the 1/7.5th scale maquette I made for the life size piece. The clouds of butterflies embody the intense beauty and transience of life.

Scaling the triceratops begins! These photos were taken back in July. Each individual scale is mapped out with various sizes of pipes and then carved into their final shapes by hand. I have been referencing photographs of the skin impressions of an actual triceratops in order to get them as close as possible to their actual sizes and shapes..(most are between 1/2 & 1 cm hexagons- luckily they get larger in other parts of the body.)

Little monster I made for a show recently. It was a collaboration between 200 6 year olds who drew their own original monsters and 200 professional artists who reinterpreted them.

Here is some progress that I’ve made in the last two weeks on the life size Triceratops head that I’m sculpting in my studio as artist in residence at the Yellowstone Art Museum..

The first stage of construction on my life size Triceratops head sculpture.

A few weeks ago I visited the North Dakota Heritage Center in Bismarck in order to research Triceratops skulls. I was fortunate enough to be able to visit with some paleontologists there and make extensive observations of their beautifully mounted specimen. I drew each of these four, 30″x36″ one hour studies from life in order to capture the perspective and presence that the full size ~6′ long head possesses in order to more accurately convey that same feeling in the life size triceratops head that I’m beginning to sculpt.
