Nathan still didn't want to deal with Haley. He had told her that he wanted to divorce her but they had to be separated. But then that day, he had walked her through the halls because the girls were stupid and were giving her shit. He could give her hell and he appreciated that she was one of the people that Peyton wasn't happy with, but he wasn't going to let random girls who he'd hooked up with in the past, treat her like that. But, he hadn't been happy he did it later.

After school, he dramatically let himself in Peyton's house, while she was doing a podcast. From what he caught the night before, she was trying to talk about what she was feeling. He made sure to stay out of sight but he dropped down on her bed, messing with his shirt.

He knew that Peyton was mad at the world, but so was he. He was gone a lot of the summer but they seemed to still be getting along since he got back, even if he was still bitter as his mother. Plus, he didn't know where they stood after the, well several times before he left and before Haley came back.

When she finally stopped talking, he glanced at her. "For someone who is dark and depressed of late, that was a lot of talking. Before you ask, yes I am avoiding Haley and I appreciate your attitude with her."

peyton  knew  the  whole  deal  of  what  was  going  on  with  both  haley  and  nathan.  it  really  wasn't  any  of  her  business.  but  what  was?  making  sure  that  her  friend  wasn't  going  through  the  heartache  of  it  all  alone.  she  wanted  nothing  more  than  for  the  two  of  them  to  work  this  out.  they  had  made  so  much  sense  together.  more  sense  than  peyton  and  nathan  ever  did.  maybe  the  situation  wasn't  really  one  she  supported,  then  again,  it  really  wasn't  her  relationship  to  decide.

she  didn't  really  like  for  people  to  be  around  whenever  she  was  doing  her  podcasts.  talking  about  her  feelings  were  hard  for  her  to  be  able  to  do  a  good  majority  of  the  time.  but  being  able  to  put  them  out  for  others  to  listen  to  may  help  a  listener  or  two  out  there.  when  she  glanced  up  from  her  desk,  she  noticed  that  nathan  had  made  his  way  in  so  she  cut  it  off  rather  quickly.

the  blonde  turned  around  in  her  chair  with  her  arms  folded  over  her  chest  and  a  playful  roll  of  her  eyes  soon  following  at  his  comment.  "  you  think  you'll  send  me  a  text  the  next  time  you  decide  on  stopping  on  over  to  my  place,  nate?  "  sarcasm  evident  in  her  tone  of  voice  as  she  glanced  at  him.  "  i  figured  that  you  were.  i  know  that  you  still  care  about  her.  and  she  still  cares  about  you  too  from  what  she's  been  telling  me.  even  if  i  don't  entirely  agree  with  the  way  she's  been  going  about  it.  "  when  she  needed  to  be  honest  she  was.  "  so,  tell  me.  what  have  you  been  doing  to  keep  your  mind  off  all  of  this?  "

"  well.  .  "  don't  mind  peyton  practically  staring  at  julian  now  with  a  raise  of  her  eyebrows.  "  i  need  to  tell  you  to  leave?  julian..  first  of  all.  what  part  of  my  tone  of  voice  meant  for  a  second  that  i  even  wanted  you  to  stay  here  in  the  first  place?  "  sarcasm  now  echoed  off  her  own  as  she  stood  in  front  of  him  with  arms  crossed.  "  don't  you  have  anywhere  or  anything  else  that  you  could  be  doing  right  now?  "

He wasn't even entirely sure what version of himself, that he was now. He was Nathan Scott though and distraction was easy with Peyton. He never felt like she was expecting him to be something that he wasn't. He watched her as she shifted closer and his eyes met hers. "It would be so easy if I could just not give a damn and be that guy who doesn't care about anyone but myself. Right now, you're the only one I can be around without feeling all the stuff I can't deal with."

Nathan took a deep breath. "Growth sucks, Peyton. I hate growth. I am more content to pretend life isn't happened outside of these walls." He glanced down and then looked up at her. "Even if it means letting her figure out if Chris fucking Keller means something to her?" The thought of that was painful to him. He hated it.

He couldn't help but lean into her touch. "Old habits are so much more fun than thinking things through, though." He wasn't ready to think. Thinking was exhausting. He just wanted to focus on Peyton. He spent more time focusing on Peyton since last night, than he probably had their entire relationship. "You know, if we were slipping into old habits that easily, you would be talking a whole lot less."

Nathan moved his hand to her cheek and then traced her lips. "You really are one of the only people I trust, Peyton." He didn't know when that had happened. But, he trusted her. Was he in love with her? Well, he would always have feelings for her. He told her that before but his heart truly belonged to someone else. But, this thing with he and Peyton it was different. It wasn't that but it wasn't what was before either. Was it just friendship? He didn't think he could say it was that either.

"You had no problems speaking about my skills last night, you know. Too bad we weren't at my house. I could have recorded it, so you could remember it." He sighed, taking a deep breath and he leaned in and kissed her, pulling her in a deep kiss, letting his hands wander, because when did his hands not wander with her. He muttered against her lips, as he bit her lower lip. "And this, is this being better together on our own terms?" His hand slid up her sides.

peyton  had  always  been  able  to  read  nathan.  or  so  she  thought  that  she  was  able  to.  even  when  he  didn't  seem  to  have  the  exact  words  for  it  himself.  the  blonde  could  tell  that  he  didn't  seem  to  know  what  he  was  doing  right  now.  this  situation  was  complicated  —  mostly  due  to  his  own  things  that  he  had  going  on  at  the  moment.  it  was  different  with  her  from  what  it  seemed.  the  struggle  in  his  eyes  was  evident.

"  growth  is  scary...  i  get  it.  but  -  do  you  really  think  that  she  would  continue  to  let  chris  keller  in  her  life  when  she  has  you?  i  think  we  both  know  what  her  choice  would  be  when  it  comes  to  the  both  of  you.  "  maybe  this  was  her  trying  to  talk  some  sense  into  him.  because  right  now  her  heart  twisted  slightly  in  her  chest  while  she  listened  to  him  talk  about  not  really  caring.  about  being  that  guy  who  shuts  everything  out.  she  knew  that  guy  once  upon  a  time.  the  guy  who  kept  people  at  arm's  length.  or  didn't  care  about  anyone  or  anything  but  himself.  nathan  wasn't  that  guy.  not  anymore.  he  was  very  different  from  the  last  time  the  two  were  together.  he  had  changed  entirely  for  the  better  and  the  last  thing  that  nathan  needed  was  to  go  back  to  his  old  habits.  but  she  wasn't  him.  peyton  couldn't  tell  him  what  he  should  or  shouldn't  do.  this  time?  it  could  be  harder  to  break  out  of.  peyton  could  feel  the  sudden  pull  between  them.  he  didn’t  want  to  deal  with  the  world,  but  with  her,  he  didn’t  need  to  pretend.  she  knew  him.  "  i  guess  we  both  have  changed  a  lot  since  the  last  time  we've.  .  .  well,  you  know how that went.  "  she  would  playfully  respond  to  lighten  any  of  the  mood.

her  thumb  carefully  and  lightly  brushed  over  his  hand  as  he  had  touched  her  cheek,  feeling  the  warmth  of  his  skin.  "  nathan...  "  she  let  the  word  hang  in  the  air.  not  entirely  knowing  how  to  respond,  unsure  of  how  to  navigate  the  space  that  had  been  between  the  two.  knowing  what  she  wanted  to  say;  feeling  like  she  didn't  know  if  it  would've  helped  or  made  it  worse  somehow.  "  you're  not  that  person.  the  person  who  doesn't  care  about  anything  or  anyone.  trust  me,  when  i  tell  you  that  being  mad  at  the  world  won't  help.  "

as  his  hand  slid  up  her  side,  their  tension  between  them  would  intensify.  she'd  always  wondered  if  things  would  go  back  to  how  they  were.  this  probably  would  of  been  something  he  would've  regretted  later.  maybe  they  both  would  have.  "  you  don't  need  to  think  so  much.  not  now,  anyway.  "  the  pull  of  their  old  habits,  their  familiarity,  the  way  they  fit  seemed  easier  than  trying  to  make  sense  of  it.  maybe  they  could  just  be  in  the  moment  instead  of  overthinking.  "  i'm  here  for  you,  really  —  whatever  it  is  that  you  need.  i'm  here.  "  she  would  make  sure  to  reassure  entirely.

"  oh,  you  really  wish  you  would  be  able  to  have  that.  i  think  it's  best  it  stays  between  us,  in  our  own  heads.  "  she'd  smirk  playfully.  whatever  before  his  lips  met  hers,  everything  else  seemed  as  though  it  was  fading  away.  she  would  loosely  wrap  her  arms  around  his  neck  while  the  kiss  that  they  shared  would  deepen;  soon  pulling  away  just  an  inch  to  respond  to  what  it  was  that  he  was  saying.  "  this  is  definitely  what  being  better  together  on  our  own  terms  should  be.  we  can  figure  the  rest  out  later.  but  it's  really  up  to  you,  there's  no  pressure  here.  "  and  for  now?  this  was  enough.  just  them  with  no  expectations  on  anything.  just  them.

while she had her moments that may have suggested otherwise, there was no doubt that at her core, brooke davis was an optimist, especially when it came to the people around her. she might not see her own bright side when it came to things that she had been through, but the people she loved and cared about? in those cases, the negative couldn’t be see. “exactly! life is meant to be messy, so best be messy now and get it all out of your system, rather than have some god awful midlife crisis later on.”

“you can be a hermit in your room between the hours of two and seven in the morning. how’s that?” smile curled up widely at the edge of her lips, knowing her faux-compromise was hardly what peyton had been suggesting. “you know you’ll thank me for it. eventually.” and she’d stand by that, for the most part. “but not tonight. tonight’s for popcorn and movies and good middle school sleepover activities.”

peyton  couldn't  help  but  grin  at  the  familiar  spark  of  brooke's  relentless  optimism.  the  kind  she  always  had  when  she  was  trying  to  cheer  peyton  up  or  make  her  feel  lighter  than  she  did  when  a  majority  of  the  time  she  felt  as  though  she  was  being  weighed  down  by  all  the  heaviness  she  felt.  of  course,  there  was  no  denying  what  brooke  had  just  said  about  life  being  messy  —  that  much  was  certain  and  there  really  wasn't  any  getting  around  that.  "  in  a  way,  you're  right.  no  point  in  saving  all  of  the  chaos  for  later  on.  "  the  blonde  would  say  it  with  a  tad  bit  of  seriousness  in  a  tone,  but  she  was  joking.

soon  enough,  peyton  would  raise  her  eyebrows  at  the  suggestion  from  her  best  friend.  "  a  hermit  from  two  to  seven?  is  that  really  what  you  think  your  version  of  a  compromise  would  be? because if i don't have to leave this room, then i may not.  "  she  laughed,  shaking  her  head.  "  fine,  but  only  because  i  love  you.  and  also  because  i  know  you're  right,  in  a  way.  you've  been  pushing  me  to  have  fun  for  months  and  i  don't  know  if  i  can  just  let  you  win  all  that  easily.  "  as  brooke  went  on  about  the  night’s  plans,  peyton  then  leaned  back  into  the  pillow.  and  despite  the  sarcasm,  this  was  just  what  she  needed.  maybe  she'd  thank  her  for  it  sooner  than  she  really  thought.  "  you  had  me  at  popcorn  and  movies.  and  as  for  the  other  activities...  let's  see  what  else  we  have  time  for  before  we  both  end  up  passing  out  from  the  complete  exhaustion.  "
