No but seriously imagine it:
Youâre seeing fall out boy on a concert. Everyone is having a great time. Fall out boy seem a little excited. âWe have a surprise for you guys.â Partick says. All of a sudden P!ATD come out and start singing âthis is gospel.â When Brendon gets to the chorus, someone else starts singing⌠âWhen I was a young boy my father took me into the city to see a marching band.â Lights flash everywhere, and you see FOB singing âthis is gospelâ along with P!ATD, while MCR is singing âBlack paradeâ. Everyone in the crowd is going wild and crying. Then if things couldnât get any better, Dan and Phil walk onto stage and kiss, holding the gay flag.

Actual good first-time college student advice:
Wear jeans/pants that âbreatheâ and bring a sweater, even if itâs scorching hot out, until you know which building blasts the AC to 60 degrees F and which feels like a sauna
Backpacks with thick straps are your friend! Messenger bags are cool and all but if youâre commuting with a lot of stuff, symmetrically styled backpacks are better for your back
You are your own person and you can walk out whenever you need to or want to, so long as youâre not disrupting the class. Meaning you can go to the bathroom without permission, take a breather if youâre anxious, answer an important phone call, etc.
If you donât like the class on the first day, if you can- DROP THAT CLASS AND TAKE ANOTHER ONE! Itâll only get worse from there!
If you can, take a class outside your major; itâs a good break from your expected studies.
You are in charge of your schedule. Your adviser and guidance counselor is there to âadvise and guideâ but if you donât like certain classes and you can substitute for others, thatâs your choice.
Consequently, if you are changing anything drastic in your plan, talk with your adviser and instructors.
Pay attention to your credit hours and grades. Â Never leave this to the last week of school, you will be sorry and stressed beyond belief!
Unless itâs a lab book or otherwise specified, go to the class for a week or so before buying an expensive textbook. Some classes, while having it on their required list, do not actually use the textbook a whole lot and you might find some of it scanned online. Rent if you can or buy used online (schools actually donât give discounts). Use your best judgement on what you think you need.
Tell the people who go up to you selling or advertising things you are not interested in that you are in a rush to class and donât have time to listen to them. Itâs less rude and theyâll leave you alone.
The smaller the class, the better it is to have some sort of acquaintanceship with a couple classmates. They might save your ass if you are absent one day or need to study. And talking with them makes the time go by faster without it being so insufferable.
You donât need to join a club or sport, but internships are cool and useful!
If you can afford it, take a day off once or twice each semester if youâre too exhausted. Just be aware of what you missed and if it was worth missing!
Your health is the most important, this goes for mental health too!! Note: College-age/upper teens is when mental disorders like depression and anxiety are most commonly diagnosed. Most schools have therapy services, especially during exam time. Look into it if you need to!
Communicate with your professor if you are having trouble with something. Anything.
Eat and stay hydrated. Bring a water bottle and snack to class.
All-nighters will happen but never go over 36 hours without sleep.
Itâs going to be hard and there will be times you might think about giving up. This WILL happen. You just have to make sure what youâre doing isnât making you absolutely miserable and/or there is something rewarding and positive to look forward to at the end!
I did none of this and it bit me in the ass every time so this is EXCELLENT ADVICE.
ADDITIONAL ADVICE
Donât let a mental health day turn into a mental health week because you will be so screwed.
Pay attention to the syllabus and do not lose it. A lot of professors put all of the assignment due dates in there and ONLY in there.
If your school has blackboard or moodle etc. CHECK IT. a lot of professors will only post certain info there and not talk about it in class
Check your student email account weekly. A lot of it will be unimportant junk but sometimes itâs the only way professors will communicate.
Check your student email multiple times DAILY.Â
THANK YOU. Iâm so glad i have resources like this queued up in my âcollegeâ tag bc honestly i was so stressed before
Advice from someone who really fucked up their freshman year:
READINGS ARE NOT OPTIONAL.
I REPEAT. READINGS. ARE. NOT. OPTIONAL.
Put them in your schedule, read BEFORE class. And summarise it. For bonus points, come up with some questions about the text and go introduce yourself to your professor either after class or during office hours, and ask them about it. This will make them much more likely to remember you in a positive light (and possibly bump your grade up if you hit a hard patch.)
Your library will have a copy of your textbook. If you cannot afford to rent it, you can go to the library and borrow it from the front desk for a few hours whenever you need it. It is there for you, okay?Â
SO DO YOUR READINGS.
When planning out your schedule, make sure you have a plan A and a plan B. Classes fill up fast so itâs better to have a back up plan.
Reblogging this because when I went to college back in the mid-90s, I could have used all this advice. I was the first person in my family to go to university, no one told me any of this, and the internet was not really A Thing yet. (For perspective, there were an entire two computers on campus which had access to the World Wide Web, because it was such a new concept that demand for it was low.) This would have been relevant then and itâs relevant now.
Email your professors ahead of class or ask on the first day if the current edition of the textbook is required!
Our universityâs campus bookstore required the professors to ârequireâ the most current edition of the textbook, which was mostly a scam!
Unless thereâs a workbook in it, most professors are fine if you go back 1-2 editions because thereâs usually only minor changes. Instead of buying a $300 brand new textbook, you can likely buy it for $8.00, and I recommend www.thriftbooks.com as a resource
BLESS YOU ALL
A SOON TO BE JUNIOR
Thank you thank you thank you thank you, youâve been more helpful than my actual advisor. Thank you thank you!
- A Senior gearing up to go to college next year
additional recommendations and considerations since most college classes will be online (some students are staying home, others might be on campus but all of their work is still online):
-lectures might seem optional because attendance wonât be required or you donât have to watch them live, itâs important anyways. so please, please watch/go
-with that said, even if your classes are asynchronous try to have a regular schedule for yourself,Â
-it might seem weird and scary not being able to actually meet your professor and not being able to ask questions in person, but trust me theyâre just as worried as you are. therefore, even if itâs scary or difficult be honest and reach out to your professor. itâs likely that there as unsure as you are, but knowing that means it can be better communicated with your class and accommodations can be made.Â
-even though it seems easy to just wake up and open youâre laptop to your lecture, still try to get up in advance (as in not the 10 minutes before). dressing up and getting ready will help you transition into a work/study mentality if itâs part of a routine
-groupme and emails will become your best way of communicating with your classmates, TAs, and professors. sometimes its weird because you donât know what level of formality to use with different people, donât worry. theyâll make it clear to you how theyâd like to be addressed either by their first names or their title (in my experiences, TAs prefer first name basis, some professors like being called by their first name or nickname and others exclusively by their title)
i know that learning from home can be really hard, so i really hope these tips help. many students are now learning at home or in a dorm without typical access to classrooms. youâre not quite sure how to measure youâre progress because itâs harder to speak with other classmates. nonetheless, trust that youâre doing your best and others are too.Â

So Karen Olivo and Eden Espinosa on Instagram just said theyâre not gonna act in a Nederlander theatre (or any company that does the same thing) until they pay up to Black Lives Matter and world to make their company anti racist Iâm !!!
(For context the Nederlander Theater org donated money to the trump campaign and theyâve housed shows on bway like Hamilton, the Lion King, On Your Feet, aka using profits from POC led shows and funding politicians against them đ¤˘)
for those thinking this is an american/broadway issue, the nederlander theatre org owns the adelphi, dominion and aldwych theatres in londonâs west end. the dominion is currently home to the prince of egypt which is a POC lead production and the aldwych theatre is home to tina: the tina turner musical.
watch who you give your money to.
Yep! they own so many theatres and if any of you want to join in hereâs a petition shared by a lot of broadway folk for the company to make a statement, donate to BLM, and have a plan on how their company is going to be anti-racist once bway opens upÂ

If you are outside India, I am practically begging you to reblog this
Last week India passed a blatantly anti-Muslim law that seeks to naturalise millions of immigrants, except if they are Muslims.
In August of this year, India revoked the autonomous status of the Kashmir region, putting a communication blackout on the state. Kashmir has entered the fifth month of no internet and heaviest militarisation of any region in the world.
India is a secular, socialist republic. This bill is anti-constitutional and against the principles on which the country was founded
Naturally, there have been protests across the country. At the forefront of the protests are students from India's public universities.
Police opened fire on peaceful protestors in Jamia Milia Islamia University in Delhi, and Aligarh Muslim University in Uttar Pradesh.
Ever since then, the ruling fascist Hindu nationalist political party, the BJP, has been doctoring videos and sending fake news all over the internet, discrediting protestors and labelling them as terrorists
India has already seen too much religious violence, please please signal boost this, call your representatives, make them aware, get them to make statements. The only thing India and its dictator Modi care about is its image abroad
This post is dated December, 2019 so a little update (June, 2020) since Iâve seen it on my dash a lot lately:
Amidst the raging pandemic and our Governmentâs botched handling of it, GOI has found the time to book student activists under a draconian âanti terrorismâ law called the UAPA.
Hereâs a brief article about what exactly the UAPA is here. It was written in October last year so itâs before all of this, but it highlights the ways it could be misused, and why itâs a cause for concern.
Hereâs another article about the same. Has proved prophetic, because our government NEVER fails to let us down!
Many student activists have been booked under UAPA, like Natasha Narwal and Devangana Kalita. Safoora Zargar, who is pregnant, has been jailed despite concerns about COVID-19 (and this being entirely under an unlawful law).
Hereâs a quick twitter thread with the names of other activists booked under UAPA.
[Oh btw, in a completely different story, no charges have been made against those suspected of inciting violence at JNU. Itâs under investigation, which sounds promising, but uh, weâve seen whatâs happened in the past. Thereâs not really a lot of hope there.]
While there are scattered protests about this, and some mild coverage from very few news channels, and people have talked about it a little, itâs been lost under all the noise of the pandemic, the migrant crisis, cyclones, locust invasion and other horrors hitting the country right now. Please, please, PLEASE raise awareness about this.

this is one reason iâm so glad iâm a historian. itâs gonna be so fucking fun to write this
dogs were deployed in buffalo, new york. i remember when dogs were deployed at standing rock as well. please educate yourselves about how to deal with dogs while they are attacking, as well as the wounds after (which have a high chance of infection). offer a dog your non-dominant arm and hit its shoulders (not head) with your dominant hand. pull dogs off fellow protesters by grabbing their hind legs, pulling, and throwing them as far as possible from both of you. you canât outrun a dog, but this will buy you time to find safety.
if you know any local street medics, check in with them about this very real possibility at your local protests so that they can educate themselves and others about dog bites.
update: dogs were also deployed in st. louis city.
hereâs a comment from another dog trainer:
âhi wanted to comment as another person who worked with training dogs. wheelbarrowing is not recommended a lot of the time because the dog CAN flip around and bite you, including your face!
frankly i would recommend having citronella spray of some kind on hand. its unpleasant AND not sus to carry. i have no issue with spraying the shit out of an aggressive animal or kicking it tbh. whatever keeps you safe.
if youre in a situation where a dog is latched on its recommended to choke them out by using a rope or lead under their jaw, lifting and pushing forward. they have to pick whether to hang on or breathe.
OH AND! COPS DO NOT! EVER! OUT THEIR DOGS! k9s intentionally are NOT cued to release because of "liability". choke those dogs OFF!!!!!!! thats what cops do every time.
if the dog is already biting a person when you attempt to drag them backward, the dog WILL bite harder and hang on, so thats another reason. im sure thats obvious but i did want to add that.â
as a former dog trainer, i seriously canât state enough that police dogs are trained via long term abuse and are often put down after retirement due to aggression issues. i know a lot of us donât want to think about the reality of having to hurt a dog, but please put that aside and consider this should it become a reality where you live. it may save your life or someone elseâs. you and other people are more important.
citronella will not work on all dogs, so please keep this in mind too.
hey! hereâs a video demonstration on how to get a dog to release a bite while also having far more control than wheelbarrowing or spray. once theyâve latched on, i can bet you they will NOT be releasing from spray. iâve seen dogs keep hold even while being stabbed, punched/kicked in the nose/stomach/eyes, being pulled off by multiple people, being attacked by other dogs, having things thrown at them, and being shocked. there are some comments discussing the common commands for these dogs, specifically discussing that they are often given in german, but i will tell you to please not rely on that. itâs not just the word that matters with commands, the tone is important, youâre playing with a ton of factors outside of your control there, and i would NOT rely on possibly knowing a command for an out for a lot of reasons, first of which because you donât want to bank on your chances of being able to deliver it effectively while being bitten. they might not even be the commands for that dog. iâve had to do this in dog parks with dogs that have gone after mine, have tried to go after me for intervening, usually with the leash still attached to them from an owner that either let it go or lost control of. if youâre expecting dogs, bring your own tools. itâs not just about putting a rope under the jaw. there are ways to make it safer for you, other people, whoever is targeted, and lastly the dog (if youâre in a position where that matters).Â
jack (@shock) is a well educated dog trainer, and a source i trust. i watched the video he linked and as a visually impaired person, found it accessible to me because all actions needed to non-lethally remove an attacking dog are verbally described. the english closed captioning is auto-generated, but iâve been informed that the instructions are also written onscreen for this video.
i will also be timestamping updates to this post. this is current information as of june 2nd at 8:28PM CST.
Just adding this small addition from the Riot Medicine PDF but will also say itâs important street medics must first stop bleeding with direct pressure if the puncture has gone deep enough. Use absorbent material and place directly over the wound to apply pressure for 10-30 minutes until blood clots have formed. Wear gloves for protection from blood and saliva (BSI.) After the bleeding has stopped rinse with water and scrub the area if you have a clean/sterile piece of gauze... then you can begin irrigating with as much water as possible to rinse any bacteria out of the wound. Critical if the bite is deep (into the hypodermis or close to the bone) or there are fractures to NOT close the wound and seek alternative medical assistance before fully bandaging. This is obviously not everything but a general overview... Please do more research if you plan to actively treat people in the streets!Â
