Very long but interesting chapter : depressive and bipolar disorders
(Donât you love when your notes end right at the bottom of the page? I do!)
Iâm taking a subject called âIndoeuropeanâ this quarter.
other language learners: set fluency goals, have a rigid study schedule that they stick to, make notes on every new grammar point they learn, memorise 10 new words a day, regularly polish duolingo skills, skype twice a week with native speakers, planning a trip overseas
me: has no idea what the fuck they are doing, watches a lot of youtube, cries
Iâm constantly stuck somewhere between âpeople arenât using that word correctlyâ and âlanguage is constantly evolving and if a significant portion of the population uses a word a certain way then that use is correct simply by virtue of being used as such in the vernacular.â
i can cry in six languages
Hi! I'm also learning Chinese at the moment and struggle a bit with remembering characters. Have you got any tips on remembering and practising them? Thanks :)
Hi, sorry for the late reply! I havenât been on Tumblr much lately.
Iâm not an expert on this, but Iâll share some quick tips.
A key thing to remember is that Chinese characters are often composed of phonetic (sound) and semantic (meaning) parts.
For exampleïŒ æȘ (crooked, slanting) is made up of äž and æŁ, literally ânot straightâ.
CharacterPop is a very useful website that breaks down characters into their components. Often, Iâll use the breakdowns as a basis for creating mnemonic stories on Memrise. (On my profile you can see a bunch of examples under âMemsâ)
Writing out characters by hand is essentially necessary to learn Chinese. Avoid just going through the motions; actively think about what youâre writing.
Repetition and especially encountering the word in context will really solidify what you learn.
I hope this was helpful! Good luck and let me know if you have any more questions :)
Upsetting grammar:Â âIt is imperative that you use the indicativeâ is actually subjunctive

Hey, letâs listen to a language we donât know for 30mins to get a feel of how it sounds and then try and come up with words in that language and check if they exist on a dictionary: winner gets 1 kiss for every point of advantage they scored on the other
If I donât understand your language, you tell me a sentence and I have to understand if itâs a compliment or an insult âyour lips are really softâ vs âdid your face get hit with somethingâ
