Practical Witchery Post #1
So, Iâve decided to go through with my idea and do a series on practical witchery, urban and otherwise. :)Â
Gathering, Drying, and Storing Herbs
Herbs are a major part of kitchen witchery and other magickal practices. Sometimes gathering, drying, and storing these herbs seems very simple, but other times, it can be a pain. You have to know what you can take without killing the plant, how to handle it if itâs dangerous, and how on Earth youâre going to store it. In this post, Iâll be shedding some light on this subject.
~ Gathering ~
Step One:
Identify the plant. Check, check, and check again to make sure this is what you think it is. There are a lot of poisonous look-a-likes that can fool you at first glance. If it has a foul twin, be extra careful in examining it. If you arenât sure whether or not itâs harmful, avoid physical contact.
After youâve finished researching it, and you havenât found a reliable way to tell if itâs poisonous or not, it would be best to leave it alone and find a substitute for it. If you feel confident that this herb is harmless and useable, go ahead and begin gathering it.
Step Two:
Decide when itâs the best time of day to harvest the herb. Most people recommend picking the herbs early in the morning, when the dewdrops are still covering the leaves. Theyâre fresh, aromatic, and very good for making essential oils. Theyâll hold their scent and taste for a longer amount of time if you collect and dry them in the morning.Â
If youâre only harvesting the flowers of an herb or plant, sometime around midday is optimal. If you have a specific herb in mind, try googling or looking in an herbal guide to find out when it is opportune to collect it. Every plant is different.
Do what works best for you, and discover prime timing for every herb you grow. You may decide that harvesting lavender right as the sun rises isnât your cup of tea, and choose to do so around noon or three oâ clock. It really is a matter of choice when gathering them, and can be done whenever you feel is best.Â
Step Three:
Collect the herb in amounts that the plant can handle. About a handful should be enough for you to take. If itâs a smaller plant, I suggest only a palmful.
Be wise in where you take the cuttings from as well; too close to the root can be bad for the plant, while higher up is best. Donât clip from one side and not the other every time you take from it either. Keep it balanced.
Step Four:Â
Leave the plant an offering. This is an optional step, really. Some people choose to offer plants things like rocks, water, crystals, fertilizer, or even Eco-friendly foods. It isnât necessary, but if you believe that plants have spirits or that they grow better when given tokens of thanks, then this may be something youâll enjoy.
I like to leave âgrowthâ sigils written on rocks whenever I take a sprig or two from the plants. Itâs quite fun actually.
~ Drying ~
Step One:
Pick out an herb drying method. There are a few methods that I find are the easiest, and some, the quickest. There are more methods, and some you may find work better for you than my personal favorites.
My top methods are:
Air Drying ~ Best option for herbs that are low in moisture.
Oven Drying ~ Tedious but good for moist herbs like mint.
Microwave Drying ~ Not the best for culinary purposes, but good for magick such as sachet making, and charm bags. It preserves color pretty well in my experience.
Step Two:
Prep your herbs and let them dry.
Air drying is very simple, and very easy. It cannot be used for herbs that are high in water content, because the herbs are more likely to mold and mildew than they are to dry. But things like lavender, rosemary, basil, and parsley can be dried using this method.
Hold your herbs by the stem, and secure them with a band. Cover them with a paper bag (optional, but will catch any seeds or loose ends that fall off) and hang them upside down. You can clip them to a hanger, a hook, or find some other way to allow them to dry. They can sit in a warm environment with little moisture and dry well. Check on them in about a week to see if theyâre finished.Â
Oven drying is a process filled with love. It takes some dedication as well as some time to get herbs to dry in an oven. Doing this isnât recommended among small children or careless adults, because it can require the oven door to be left open (if you have vented ovens you should be okay, but I would open it up every fifteen minutes to get more air flow)
Heat your oven to somewhere between 100°F and 180°F. 100°F is best, but not all ovens will operate at that low of a temperature.Â
Place your herbs on a baking sheet, slide them onto the bottom rack. Crack your oven open for some air flow, and let them dry for 2-5 hours. Most of the time, my herbs are done around 3 and a half, but I still check them every twenty minutes or so.
When they start to look dusty and brittle, they should be good to take out. Let them sit until they are no longer hot, and proceed to storing them.Â
Microwave drying is good for those urban witches. It takes little time, and is an effective way to store your herbs.Â
Gently remove the leaves and flowers from your herb, and put them on a wash cloth or paper towel. Cover with another towel and place it in the microwave.
Set your microwaveâs power to about 500-800 watts. Set the time to 5 seconds, and add more to it after you take it out to see how much it will need. typically, 15-30 seconds will be enough if you take it out to check 3-4 times.Â
When the herb becomes brittle, it is finished drying.Â
~ Storing ~
Step One:
Gather a few airtight containers or plastic bags. Fill them up carefully, and try to avoid letting any moisture get into the container. (If the container is dark, the herbs will most likely last longer.)
Step Two:
Mark the container with the date and the herb inside of it. If this is an herb with side effects, you can list those here and avoid any problems down the road. You can also list its magickal benefits if you would like.
Step Three:
Keep this in an area that is cool and dark. Avoid wet conditions and check for mold and mildew every so often. These herbs should stay good for about 6-12 months. A nice spot for your herbs would be away from your oven, inside of a cupboard or pantry.
Another method of storing herbs skips the drying process entirely. You can freeze your plants and keep them for a while longer than if you were to dry them. You can keep them in olive oil, water, other mixtures. Be sure to use healthy, safe liquids when storing them!
***Always be careful when dealing with herbs, especially ones that you know nothing about. Have fun harvesting, but also be safe!***
Well, this is my first Practical Witchery Post! Hope you liked it :)
Gave my room a hardcore cleansing last night, because something icky was hanging around, and ended up burning so much incense I smell vaguely like a campfire. The nastiness is gone, though!
Like normally I canât motivate myself to clean, ever, but the idea of BANISHING NASTINESS got me working for two and a half hours straight and I finally put together the shelves Iâve been carting around in my trunk for a week.

im sry if this is a pain in the ass but i need curses for abusers specifically. thank you so much, you have a wonderful blog !!!
I am listing curses that are specifically for abusers, but also some that I think are suitable for abusers. (The list of curses I had specifically for abusers was really small soâŠ)
All Eyes on You
To the Bottom of the Ocean - A Curse for the Mistreated, and the Misused
Curse for Abusers *

Oh, also, because it is important:
Cursing 101
Self Care After Cursing
So You Just Did a Big Curse⊠Now What?
I hope that helps you. :D
Know What You Have Done
Requested by @glithch
This is neither a curse, nor a hex, as it does not return the pain caused (though it can easily be reformatted to do so), but simply makes the aggressor aware of it. More than that, it is to force them to understand the pain caused. Do not be wary of its simplicity, for its effects are tried and true.
Gather
A large bowl â the darker in color the better **
Water **
(Optional, though highly recommended): a personal affect of your aggressor)
(Optional: a Candle, black or white)
** Alternately, you can replace the bowl and water for a mirror or other scrying surface of your choosing
Instructions
Take with you your items to a dark room. Light the candle (or another dull light source) and pour your water into the bowl. The goal is to arrange it so that you cannot see through the water, but can only see the reflection on its surface.
When you have found the perfect lighting, take the personal affect in your left hand and âfindâ them in the water. You want to use the affect to attune to their spirit/energy so that you can âseeâ them. Keep working until you have a definitive link. You will know it when you have it.
Once the link has been made, using your right hand, dip your fingers into the water (hence why the bowl of water is preferred) Â â this represents their subconsciousness. Bring forth the incident in which you were wrong and âplace alongsideâ it, your own pain. Not in such a way as to inflict the pain, but to make them aware of your own. If you find it easier, feel free to speak what they have done aloud and the results of their actions. âThis is what you have done.â
When you have said your peace and shown them what they need to see, break the link by flicking the water from your fingers onto the surface and releasing the personal affect from your hand. Pour out the water wherever convenient and do with the personal affect whatever you feel is appropriate. There is no need to destroy or get rid of it â in fact, you may wish to hold onto it for any further work.

âEdible Flowers Pt. 2â-
*Please read part one here for cautionary steps when working with edible flowers*
Lemon Verbena (Aloysia triphylla) - Tiny cream-colored citrus-scented blossoms. Leaves and flowers can be steeped as an herbtea, and used to flavor custards and flans.
Marjoram (Origanum majorana) - Flowers are a milder version of plantâs leaf. Use as you would the herb.
Mint (Mentha spp) - The flavor of the flowers are minty, but with different overtones depending on the variety. Mint flowers and leaves are great in Middle Eastern dishes.
Oregano (Origanum vulgare) - Milder version of plantâs leaf. Use as you would the herb.
Rosemary - Milder version of leaf. Fresh or dried herb and blossoms enhance flavor of Mediterranean dishes. Use with meats, seafoods, sorbets or dressings. Lemon Rosemary Chicken
Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius) - The dried flowers, Mexican saffron, are used as a food colorant in place of the more aromatic and expensive Spanish saffron.
Sage (Salvia officinalis) - The flowers are violet-blue, pink or white up to 1 3/8 inches long, small, tubelike, clustered together in whorls along the stem tops. Flowers have a subtler sage taste than the leaves and can be used in salads and as a garnish. Flowers are a delicious companion to many foods including beans, corn dishes, sauteed or stuffed mushrooms, or pesto sauce.
Savory (Satureja hortensis) - The flavor of the flowers is somewhat hot and peppery and similar to thyme.
Thyme (Thymus spp.) - Milder version of leaf. Use sprigs as garnish or remove flowers and sprinkle over soups, etc. Use thyme anywhere a herb might be used.)
Hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis) - Cranberry-like flavor with citrus overtones. Use slightly acidic petals sparingly in salads or as garnish. The flower can be dried to make an exotic tea.
Hollyhock (Alcea rosea) - Very bland tasting flavor.
Honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica) - Sweet honey flavor. Only the flowers are edible. NOTE: Berries are highly poisonous - Do not eat them!
Impatiens (Impatiens wallerana) - The flowers have a sweet flavor. They can be used as a garnish in salads or floated in drinks.
Johnny-Jump-Ups (Viola tricolor) - Lovely yellow, white and purple blooms have a mild wintergreen flavor and can be used in salads, to decorate cakes, or served with soft cheese. They are also a great addition to drinks, soups, desserts or salads.

~*Powders for and against Love*~
These powders were designed as sisters and foils of the other. One can bring love and help a relationship last. The other can break love spells, repel affection, and corrupt a relationship.
For a powder to attract the desire of others and soothe loverâs in peril:
Take the petals of a whole dried rose blossom and two petals from another and add them to the mortar.Â
Next add sugar in half the ratio of the petals.
Add four tulip petals of a bright color.
Add two pinches of ground nacre (the shiny inner part of sea shells). If this is impossible, white sand from ocean shore may be substituted.
Grind these ingredients together until the powder is fine. Apply a tiny bit of the powder to the cheeks with a brush to attract the desire of onlookers. Sprinkle under your bed to attract a lover. Sprinkle over the threshold to bring a true friend and companion into your life. Throw into the path or onto the footsteps of quarreling lovers to soothe them. A powerful aid to love sachets and spells.
For a powder to break a love spell and repel affection:
Take petals of a whole dried rose and all but two to the mortar
Add twice as much charcoal as petals
Next is salt, a few pinches will do
And two petals from a white lily, torn to shreds and added in
Grind the mixture until you have a course powder. Sprinkle at the four corners of your home to break a love spell. Placed on the threshold and windows, or carried in a sachet it prevents them from being cast against you. If you desire to combat unwanted affections of someone, cast the powder where they will be the next to walk. Sprinkled under the bed, it will ensure the sleeper will not be able to attract a love. A powerful aid in curses designed to corrupt the love between others. I donât recommend using it for this purpose, though.
Blessings

water moons + relationships
water moons (cancer/scorpio/pisces), emotionally, need reassurance. they have emotions that must be expressed and, perhaps more importantly, validated by their loved ones. water moon individuals are those who make decisions with their heart; they are feelers, not thinkers. not that they arenât smart, they just process information via how a situation or problem makes them feel. and thatâs how they go about seeking out a significant other; they go with their heart and seek for someone to make them feel important, cared for, and validated.
water moon + fire venus
an affliction common for individuals with this combination is worrying about every facet of the relationship before seeing the person, and then forgetting it all and having a great time. fire venusâs hold the capacity to rush into things romantically (less so for sagittarius venus, however still potentially there), which may tug on the nativeâs water moon, enticing its desire for a forever relationship. a lesson for this combination is not to let your overly questioning/doubting moon stop you from enjoying a relationship. another is not to let your spontaneous, fun-loving venus blind you from whatâs truly making you unhappy. itâs a struggle for balance between total devotion and total entertainment.
water moon + earth venus
sensitive in theory, more pragmatic in practice. earth is said to be waterâs opposite; however, both elements share the longing of protection or security. earth venus wants to know their partner is in it for the long haul, and that they can solve their problems in a manageable fashion. your moon sign, however, may not be able to give you that! water moons share an acute sensitivity to the subtle changes in a personâs demeanor, and can cause a tirade of insecurities to attack their brain. however, the venus in them will bring them down to, well, earth when the time is needed. this is a combination who will not only cherish you, but look forward to your routine of togetherness. itâs an insecure combination, but one that will love you maturely and wholly.
water moon + air venus
an internal push-pull for the native with this combination. this is a combination that values its privacy and distance to an extent, but craves a dedicated adoration. the ultimate goal for this person is to have a partner who will be their best friend, their water moon and air venus will treasure the ability to have conversations about anything; the water moon has abundance of emotions and longs for stability while the air venus needs its space and some laid-back laughs. until this native finds such, they may find themselves holding on with dear life to the wrong people as they struggle to find the balance they desire. this partner may have lots to say about matters of the heart as they are drawn to such but they arenât the greatest in practicing what they preach. a lover of this combination can only get by on so much mental connection before water emanates in the search for an emotional tie. the bond itself is what matters most to them.Â
water moon + water venus
the phrase âtruly, madly, deeplyâ fits perfectly for individuals with this combination. water moon coupled with water venus dramatizes a relationship, sometimes for good, sometimes bad. though the individualâs way of showing love may vary, you can bet they will try and express it to you as much as they possibly can. natives with these placements might also, however, be the type to push their partnerâs boundaries and âtestâ them, perhaps gauging their loyalty & commitment. water moon + water venus paints an almost magical picture of their love life, living in fantasy; as julia roberts in pretty woman put it, âi want the fairytale.â a cancer venus is the fairy godmother, a scorpio venus is a black knight in shining armour, and a pisces venus is the damsel in distress.
