Living off the grid can begin with careful choices in solar lights and appliances while still living in your current home. Start successfully moving to a more self sufficient lifestyle today.
Lots of photos and info about the solar powered lights, electric fences etc we use on our off-grid farm. Even if you're still connected to the electricity grid, you can start saving money and help the environment by making greener choices.
If you're serious about living off the grid, start collecting a few of these necessities. :)
Living off the grid can be less stressful and more profitable than the lifestyle you are leaving behind. Here's some of my top tips to get you started.
Fresh and organic.
With our own vegetable gardens, orchard, animals etc, we eat extremely well living off the grid. Our food is fresh and organic. We bake bread, make cheese, brew beer, and store enough of the summer harvest to carry us through winter months. Is this the kind of life you'd like for your family?
Fresh and organic!
So much to tell about living off the grid.
The first few years of living off the grid will always be a learning experience - I don't care who you are or how much you've read on the topic. Until you begin 'walking the walk', talking about being self-sufficient and living a sustainable lifestyle doesn't really count for much.
Before I moved my family totally off-grid nearly six years ago, I'd lived off the grid for relatively short periods and wondered what all the fuss was about. It was easy enough to plant and grow vegetables, and getting the hang of solar power wasn't so hard.
What I failed to consider during my experimental phase was the wealth of knowledge that only comes with first-hand experience over a period of years. Until you've faced a lengthy drought, flooding rains, catastrophic bushfire warnings, a bad harvest year and countless other unexpected and unplanned dramas that arise when you're seriously attempting to live off-grid with no connection to town water or power, you can't really imagine what off-grid living is really like.
I am hoping this site will become a place where others choosing or contemplating an off-grid lifestyle can gather to gain a few hints, ask a few questions and hopefully learn enough to make the off-grid experience a little easier.
For all the hard times, and there have a been more than I'd have liked, my family and I love living off the grid. There are so many pleasures and daily delights. We hope to live a sustainable lifestyle and remain self-sufficient for the rest of our lives.
It gets easier with time. :)

"If there's a choice, always take the easy option!"
