“I can’t believe those words came out of my mouth. Damn, what is in my drink?”
“Were you serious or...?”
“Do you want me to accidentally brush against your breasts? Cause I don’t need a drink to do that.”
“You didn’t just really say that, did you?”
“You say that now but pretty soon I’ll be tripping over my own feet and spilling a drink on you.”
“Then you’ll be cleaning it up.”
“Now I’m just embarrassing myself in front of an attractive woman.” He smiled gently, a slight blush tinting his cheeks. “A sleek road and bad brakes, I was lucky.”
“I think you’re doing just fine.”
“Well, I can get you some.” He chuckled, hearing what it really sounded like. “Car accident, it wasn’t horrible but I did fracture a rib.”
“Oh yeah?” she asked, giggling lightly. She felt a little light headed after all. “That sucks. I’m sorry. How’d it happen?”
“Yeah, that’s always good.” Maddi agreed. “So you’re happy here then? In this town?”
“Yes. Why?”
“Yes. Yes I am. And I’m going to enjoy every minute of it. You must be so happy to be back.”
“I’m glad to have a bed to call my own.”
“I think I saw someone cooking hotdogs earlier, if you’re a meat eater. That…didn’t come out right.”
“I’ve been good, just healing from an accident that happened a few weeks ago. How about you?”
Caprice smiled. “I like meat.”Â
“I just got back from Arizona. What happened a few weeks ago?”
Anika filled up her cup, downed it and then filled it up again. She filled up another cup as well before walking back over to her friend. “Here, I didn’t hear if you wanted one so I brought you one anyway.” She was trying to stay positive and act like everything was normal. She had to keep reminding herself that she didn’t have any right to be mad over what either of them did to each other before she was thrown into the mix. “So this burlesque show, when were you thinking of having it? Cause I think if it’s in the winter, it would be too cold for the models and spring doesn’t really scream sexy to me. I guess fall could work but it’d be a quick turnaround and was it good? The sex?” She awkwardly segwayed into the question she didn’t want to ask.
Caprice hadn’t expected Anika to come back. She suddenly wasn’t in the mood to talk to her, or anyone. God she hated the way people looked at her sometimes, for what she was, for how she survived. “I don’t -- Anika, I don’t want to talk about it,” she said, tossing her empty cup to the side. “I’m sorry,” she said, offering Anika a gentle smile before getting up and brushing off her pants. “We can talk tomorrow when we don’t have any drinks in our system. Clear the air.”
Anika’s heart dropped into her stomach. So her suspicions had been correct and that didn’t really comfort her. Still she couldn’t exactly be mad at either of them, her and Maddi were just strangers to each other at that time, so why did it bug her so much? “Oh OK that makes sense, you can’t actually hurt each other but the human could’ve been hurt and it was a mutual gain right. OK cool” She rambled, still trying to process this new information. She went to start talking again but before she could start she brought her cup to her lips and drained the rest of her cup. “Oh look at that I’m empty. Do you want a drink too?” She asked before heading towards the keg without waiting for a response.
Caprice frowned as she watched her friend walk away. “Anika. Anika!” she called, hoping she would come back but assuming she wouldn’t. She hated being a succubus more than anyone actually knew. “Great.”
“Oh you do? Cool” Anika commented but she could feel her heart start pounding in her chest. She knew that Caprice didn’t just know people. “Umm…I’m not really sure. We’re still figuring things out, it’s a pretty new thing. How exactly do you know him?” She asked, really hoping her suspicions were wrong.
Caprice could already tell where this conversation was going. Looking down, she replied, “He was trying to feed on a stranger and I needed to feed and he needed to too... so you know. I’m a succubus.”
“Nothing is wrong, just got a lot on my mind.  You know we never got much time to catch up when I got into town.  What made you leave the city?”
“Work actually. But I’m back and ready to... drink. And eat marshmallows. Lots of marshmallows.”
“It’s a he. Why does everyone keep thinking I’m leaning towards the ladies?” Anika asked, rather rhetorically. “I’m not sure if you know him, he hasn’t been in town very long. His name is Daughtry but he goes by Maddi, that’s probably what most people call him.” She said, rather happy to finally be telling someone other than Estelle.
Caprice smirked. “I know Maddi. He’s a vampire. Hot. Are you two exclusive or...?”
“You don’t?  I think you may be the only one.”
“What’s wrong, Leon?”
Anika laughed with her before taking another sip of her beer. “I think as long as we don’t open up a testing center for the toys in the back, we’ll be far from trashy” She commented before getting a little serious. “Well you know where to find me if you are really in need of a feed.” She threw out there casually. “Although I’m not sure if I can go as far as I did the last time. I’m kind of seeing someone now.”
“That’s true. That’s very true,” Caprice said, grinning. “Oh yeah? Who? He? She?”
“If I knew why, I would try to fix it.  Guess it stems from always being an outcast.”
“I don’t think you’re an outcast.”
“I dunno, I do decent in small gatherings but large crowds I tend to get a bit anxious in.”
“Why?”
