Pandemic tales

This is an excerpt from Pandemic tales, by Jonas Gutierrez

In a world recovering from an epidemic, a collector is trying to find old books and movies to restore humanity’s knowledge.

Inspired by Giovanni Boccaccio’s 1353 masterpiece „The Decameron“, „Pandemic tales“ is a series of stories all of which intermingled and somehow blending together at the end.

It features stories about murders, isolation, exes stuck together in their tiny apartment all merging into a dystopian world where humanity’s dependence on urban technology has been suddenly severed after the Internet breaks.

After a few decades of pure survival, in a world rebuilding itself books became so rare that they are more valuable than gold, giving birth to a new profession – wild west style gunfighters who roam the globe collecting these valuables at all costs.

This movie technique of slowing down time during an action scene is today widely called “bullet time” and the term had first been used within the original script of the 1999 Wachowski’s classic.

However, special effects are just that, only special effects and the speed of the pistol bullet in windless conditions is only hundreds of meters per second.

Now, with a really cool new(ish) photography method called Femto-Photography, scientists are able to take high-speed video at a trillion frames per second.

Perhaps it seems surprising than anyone is willing to travel in a time of global pandemic, as more than a third of the planet’s population is under some form of restriction.

But Booking.com alone had an estimated 22.7 millions visits in the last 28 days.

If we combine that with the data from Google trends, possible conclusion is that many are traveling in an attempt to escape the virus.

For example, search term „travel countries no coronavirus“ skyrocketed mid March in United States.

In Michigan officials even had to warn against traveling up north to escape COVID-19 pandemic because, while Michiganders deal with COVID-19 and the state lockdown, some in the metro Detroit area have considered spending the quarantine period away — up north. Lots of nature, fewer crowds, less reported cases of the virus.
