September is Spinal Cord Awareness Month
As many of you already know, this is a cause VERY near and dear to my heart. Two years ago the end of August my Master/husband suffered a devastating injury when he dove into a lake that we visited every year for 18 years. The same dock, the same spot, the same way he always did to welcome us to our favorite summer camping spot. Little did we know, someone had dumped trash there from a worksite and he hit his head on a pipe breaking his neck and rendering him a quadriplegic. Our lives forever changed that day literally in the blink of an eye.
Did you know…
Every 48 minutes someone in the U.S. is paralyzed from a spinal cord injury.
An estimated 1,275,000 individuals in the United States live with a spinal cord injury and millions of people worldwide are living with paralysis. Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for spinal cord injuries.
An estimated 100,000 of those individuals living with a spinal cord injury are veterans who suffered the injury while serving as members of the United States Armed Forces.
If I could have have just one wish, it would be for you all to think about a few things. I know you probably already ‘think’ about them now but I mean truly stop and think about them. One would be texting while driving. The other is drinking and driving and of course the third would be diving into water of any sort without being aware of your surroundings. Having been an ER/.trauma nurse for 20 years I witnessed horrifying, life altering travesty due to the three things mentioned above. One of those things including and far to often being paralysis. Death is final. You aren’t around to suffer. Your family is able to mourn and eventually move on. When you are permanently disabled in a way that takes away all your freedom and ability to live your life. When you feel helpless, useless and no longer a ‘real’ man or provider, there is no worse feeling in the world for the victim or those who love them. The mourning never ends. You live everyday reminded of what was and what could be. You mourn the loss of the life you once had. You feel like a burden to those who love you most and those who love you most wish they could take your place and end your suffering and pain. You lose your dignity and pride and drive you once had to live life to the fullest. So please just think about these things. Don’t for one second think you are immune from something happening to you if you do it ‘just this once.’ It only takes one time, one second to completely turn your life and the life of those who love you most upside down forever. Chose to live. Chose to not put others at risk. Life is too precious and we aren’t promised tomorrow. And for God’s sake, please stop having sex while driving down the highway like it’s something to be proud of. It’s not. It’s stupid and makes you a real asshole for risking others lives for the sake of getting your rocks off.
In closing I’d like to ask if you’d consider wearing green one day this month in support of Spinal Cord injury awareness. One day take a walk in support and think about the freedom you have doing so and how fortunate you are to have the use of your arms and legs. Reach out to an organization in your area for Spinal Cord injuries and Traumatic brain injuries and get educated. Make a donation or just simply say a prayer.Visit a Vet who has been affected from a war related spinal or brain injury that has caused the same devastation Any bit of effort goes a long way to those dealing with it. Both the one affected and their caregivers and loved ones.
If you do happen to take a day and honor this wish wearing green, I’d love to see it. Send me a submission. I’d love to share them with my Master as well.
Thank you for your time if you have read to the end of this post. Best regards.

I love You Master. To infinity and beyond. Come what may. Until my dying day.
One final shameless bump on the last day of the month that honors Spinal cord injury awareness. A cause VERY near and dear to my heart. Please, get out and walk, support and educate. And if you have a chance throw on a little green before the end of the day but don’t stop there. Wear it throughout the year in support. We should never stop fighting and looking for a cure. We just can’t !
Peace and love.
