Rewatching The House and honestly the Developer’s story is the most disturbing to me. It’s not just about the weird bugs, but the themes, the implications. The first story and it’s demise is understandable, the lack of modern tech and isolating environment playing into it. But with the Developer, he has all of that at his disposal and still loses. The visual storytelling combined with the twists do an amazing job of showing how far gone he is already from the start of his chapter to the end.
• His constant calls to his dentist, the only person he feels he has a connection to. As far as we know, he has no friends, no family, and no lover to rely on.
• He’s spent everything on refurbishing The House. It’s implied that this isn’t his real job and he just decided to pick this run down building on the street and give it a makeover. He probably took out loans from the bank and that’s why they keep calling him. The fact that he’s spent all these resources, all this time and not once thinking “This is all wrong,” is so fucked up.
• The way he devours that candy bar. The obsession and feeding is already a part of him.
• I firmly believe that he really did order the junk food because it was the only thing his budget allowed at the time. He fooled himself into thinking he purchased gourmet delivery.
• The Bugs putting on a fantastical display to convince him their lifestyle is a better way to live and then watch them destroy everything he worked so hard to build.
• People saw his mental and physical decline and didn’t do anything to help him.
The Developer is obviously mentally ill and has warped views of reality. He could have called somebody, he could have sought help, but when he did, it was brushed aside. To see him fall with similar elements that attacked the first family in a modern age is such an ironic and sad fate.
